I was re-reading A Game of Thrones, and several quotes from an early Tyrion chapter made me think of a post secretlyatargaryen wrote regarding Tyrion and the fantasies he used to harbor of his abusers (Tywin, Cersei) dying violently. It was met with negativity toward Tyrion, which I think perhaps can be negated with even the most superficial of readings.

The following two quotes are from Tyrion’s chapter as he rides from Winterfell with Benjen, Jon, Yoren, and recruits to the Wall.

Tyrion pushed the bearskin aside and climbed to his feet. “I used to start fires in the bowels of Casterly Rock and stare at the flames for hours, pretending they were dragonfire. Sometimes I’d imagine my father burning. At other times, my sister.” Jon Snow was staring at him, a look equal parts horror and fascination. Tyrion guffawed. “Don’t look at me that way, bastard. I know your secret. You’ve dreamt the same kind of dreams.”

“No,” Jon Snow said, horrified. “I wouldn’t…”

No? Never?” Tyrion raised an eyebrow. “Well, no doubt the Starks have been terribly good to you. I’m certain Lady Stark treats you as if you were one of her own. And your brother Robb, he’s always been kind, and why not? He gets Winterfell and you get the Wall. And your father…he must have good reasons for packing you off to the Night’s Watch…” (Tyrion, A Game of Thrones)

Tyrion was the last to retire, as always. As he stepped into the shelter his men had built for him, he paused and looked back at Jon Snow. The boy stood near the fire, his face still and hard, looking deep into the flames.

Tyrion Lannister smiled sadly and went to bed. (Tyrion, A Game of Thrones)

A pretty obvious parallel set up by GRRM, and within two pages of each other in the same chapter. Obviously, when Jon looks into the flames, he is not thinking of his father or sister as Tyrion did - Jon has been shown to have a loving relationship with Arya, and his numerous callbacks to Ned’s lessons imply a good relationship there as well - but Tyrion was on the nose in identifying the main two people Jon had (minor and major) problems with growing up.

This comes back around later when Stannis Baratheon offers Jon the north; Jon refuses under the excuse that Winterfell is Sansa’s, but his following chapters show he can’t help but think about Catelyn and Robb’s constant reminder of his bastard status and how he would never deserve or inherit the north as Ned’s heir, despite secretly wanting it.

All in all, no. It is not creepy that Tyrion had these fantasies. For any child being abused, I think perhaps it’s a coping method. These fantasies of dragonfire made Tyrion feel strong and mighty when all he has ever been considered is stunted, twisted, and ugly.

A quick process of my last illustration, Winter is here

My scanner rioted, but it still gives a little insight.

1/ I do a rough sketch, using Photoshop, and keep is messy and loose, then I print it and…

2/ …I clean up the lines, using an ink pen.

3/ I add values to determine my lighting and have an idea of where I’m going before starting inking.

4/ Ink ! Several layers of ink on 300g/m2 watercolor paper. Using salt for the snow flakes in the background !

5/ Scan, edit, add more values to help the eye reading the picture.

And voilà !

I made this piece as I got so thrilled watching the new Game of Thrones season, where everyone is incredibly concerned (also, dragons). Can’t wait to see what will happen next to the Worried Squad ©

“If you walk slowly,” Tyrion said.

apenitentialprayer:

“If there are gods to listen, they are monstrous gods who torment us for their sport. Who else would make a world like this, so full of bondage, blood, and pain? Who else would shape us as they have?”

— Tyrion Lannister (George R.R. Martin’s A Dance with Dragons, page 835)

George R.R. Martin basically admitting his entire mission in writing these books. His writing illustrates exactly what Providence would look like if God weremalevolent.

I don’t think either of those statements are necessarilytrue. In terms of the second, I don’t think I’ve seen anything in this series so far (you know, ignoring the fact that some of this happens by magic) that is any worse than things that have happened in real life; is/are the god(s) of this story malevolent? Possibly. But do we know if there even are gods? Not necessarily, except for the old gods, who don’t seem to exist quite exactly as their adherents picture them. George Martin is a lapsed Catholic who has never claimed any certainty; he says he’s agnostic. I think we should be careful about confusing neutralitytowards religious belief for hostilitytowards religious belief.

As far as this quote is concerned, we have to remember that this is also a thought from Tyrion; it’s just his perspective. And given the sheer amount of awful stuff he has gone through at this point, I’m not really faulting him;

  • feeling responsible for his ex-wife’s gang-rape
  • watching the gods fail to prove his innocence in a trial by ordeal when he is, in fact, innocent.
  • living with his disability in a world that punishes him for simply living with his disability.
  • being held responsible for the death of his mother, an event that he could have done nothing to change.
  • his whole relationship with his father and Shae.
  • All of the good he did not only going unacknowledged, but actively demonized because of his disability.

I can feel for Tyrion. I have a lot of sympathy for him, and his worldview is understandable given everything in this story. But we also have to remember (I) Tyrion’s story isn’t finished yet -at least, I hope TWoWwill come out eventually-, and (II) Tyrion is only one POV character among many. And sometimes the gods/providence/the universe/a character’s luck isgood.

jaime and tyrion. my boys. i love them. i love how they’re always thinking about each other, like it’s second nature for tyrion to think about how jaime would laugh at something a rando said, or how jaime always wonders what tyrion would have done in a specific situation. they care about each other so much. they’re existences are so inextricably tied to the other, this is ironically what cersei and jaime think, and what we as the reader perceive at first, but it ends up being jaime and tyrion who have this deep understanding and connection with each other and they keep trying to push the thought of the other out of their head post tyrion’s escape like they’re trying to convince themselves to hate the other because they have to, they should, they should want to. what’s more is that the things they dislike about themselves, the other likes. jaime hates himself for being rash and quick to act, he thinks it’s foolish of him, but tyrion admires that about him, hating the fact that he himself cannot seem to act upon something without constantly thinking it over. conversely, jaime admires how thoughtful and calculated tyrion is. every time they’re in a situation™ they’re like “ughh my big/baby bro would know just what to do man” i’m crying your honour i love them i love them.

indulging myself:

“He has a large heart, our Robert,” Jaime said with a lazy smile. There was very little that Jaime took seriously. Tyrion knew that about his brother, and forgave it. During all the terrible long years of his childhood, only Jaime had ever shown him the smallest measure of affection or respect, and for that Tyrion was willing to forgive him most anything.

— AGOT, TYRION I

“Past certain, Lord Mormont,” Tyrion replied. “My brother Jaime will be wondering what has become of me. He may decide that you have convinced me to take the black.”

—AGOT, TYRION III

Chiggen sliced a thin strip of bloody meat off the carcass and held it up for inspection. “Want a taste, dwarf?”

“My brother Jaime gave me that mare for my twenty-third name day,” Tyrion said in a flat voice.

— AGOT, TYRION IV

“Well done,” Tyrion said. “Scum you may be, but you’re undeniably useful, and with a sword in your hand you’re almost as good as my brother Jaime. What do you want, Bronn? Gold? Land? Women? Keep me alive, and you’ll have it.”

— AGOT, TYRION VI

His brother Jaime had always been able to make men follow him eagerly, and die for him if need be. Tyrion lacked that gift. He bought loyalty with gold, and compelled obedience with his name.

— AGOT, TYRION VIII

Tyrion wondered whether this was the last sunrise he would ever see … and whether wondering was a mark of cowardice. Did his brother Jaime ever contemplate death before a battle?

— AGOT, TYRION VIII

Better than you, you chinless craven, Tyrion thought. Jaime might have lost Riverrun, but it angered him to hear his brother slandered by the likes of Swyft, a shameless lickspittle whose greatest accomplishment was marrying his equally chinless daughter to Ser Kevan, and thereby attaching himself to the Lannisters.

— AGOT, TYRION IX

Jaime had once told him that Moore was the most dangerous of the Kingsguard—excepting himself, always—because his face gave no hint as what he might do next.

— ACOK, TYRION I

Tyrion stared at the dregs on the bottom of his wine cup. What would Jaime do in my place? Kill the bitch, most likely, and worry about the consequences afterward.

— ACOK, TYRION XII

Tyrion is going to laugh himself sick when he hears how I slept through my own escape.

— ASOS, JAIME I

All Jaime had wanted was an hour alone with Cersei. Their journey north had been one long torment; seeing her every day, unable to touch her, knowing that Robert stumbled drunkenly into her bed every night in that great creaking wheelhouse. Tyrion had done his best to keep him in a good humor, but it had not been enough.

— ASOS, JAIME I

The prospect of returning to his cell did not appeal to Jaime. Tyrion could think of something clever now, but all that occurs to me is to go at them with a sword.

— ASOS, JAIME I

“The Boltons skin their enemies.” Jaime remembered that much about the northman. Tyrion would have known all there was to know about the Lord of the Dreadfort, but Tyrion was a thousand leagues away, with Cersei.

— ASOS, JAIME IV

Tyrion would like this one. They could talk from dusk to dawn, arguing about books.

— ADWD, JAIME I

“Griff brought me up?“ He must hate me, or he would have let me die.

a redraw of a piece i did a few years ago of this scene….. one of my favorite moments ever. the fact that despite his dislike for tyrion, joncon jumped into the river to save his life and ends up with a disease that’s killing him because of it drives me crazy. I love how complex their relationship & the parallels between them are…. when the “this ineffable thing has tied me to him, tows me with a cable I have no knife to cut” hits

also grrm never said joncon DIDNT take his shirt off to jump in the river so I’m using my artistic liberty
