On this day, 5 years ago, I took my first violin lesson with Lumière, the violin! I was 27 years old and at that time, I honestly didn’t think I would be able to learn, after all I was too old for that!

Now Beren and I still have a lot to learn, I often feel frustrated and think about giving up. But music is part of me now and brings me a lot of joy, so I can say: ' !! And I’m very proud of my journey and everything I’ve achieved in those 5 years.

This is one of my favorite songs! I recorded this video on March but I never published on my YouTube channel because I couldn’t remove this annoying beep in the background. I think I stopped to record and post because of this…
But I liked the atmosphere, so maybe I will try again this kind of scenario in the future.
In this video I was playing for 1 year and 9 months. It was my first time trying to play in the third position and I didn’t do vibrato in this music.

Yeeaah it’s one of those popular TikTok songs. But I just couldn’t resist the ✨ drama ✨ of the Sarah Cothran version.
I’ve wanted to attempt to write thiiccccc juicy Eric Whitacre-style chorale harmonies for AGES… Crazy 11th and 13th chords everywhere. 5ths in the bass line for emphasis. SO MUCH DISSONANCE?!!?!? But whenever I’ve tried to arrange a whole song that way I get overwhelmed and don’t finish - taking just the climax of this song was perfect.
So there’s the arranging challenge… Then how on earth do you mix the sound of 7 string parts, make each part audible, AND still make the solo part stand out above it??? … And then there was this Bo Burnham - “Inside” projector video lighting nonsense I wanted to try … I can never just keep it simple. I learned a lot of little things from this, though.

So, this was by far the hardest thing I’ve ever tried to transcribe+work up and it got me thinking a lot about virtuosity across different styles of music.
Yes, it pretty universally equates to playing real fast, real impressive-like … But the values tend to be different.
In classical violin there’s such a huge emphasis on perfectly even, clean runs. Clear tone. Nuance of dynamics. Kind of the opposite side of the musical world from the raw power of death metal.
I definitely sat for hours with this solo slowed down, trying to pick out the actual notes he’s playing and going at the uneven parts and the patterns that just aren’t meant to be played on violin… And I prepped it like a classical nerd too! Metronome work up and everything. I thought I’d come up with a “super clean” version of the solo, but maaaaan did it not work out that way.
In the end… idk… Virtuosity is subjective. Sanitized perfect runs are overrated in the face of an overall powerful performance. Tap style guitar solos are cruel to play on violin..

I woke up one morning meaning to practice some etudes and Mozart but this happened instead.

For the Fool I liked so much who literally hid me out of sight for fear of being seen talking to me when someone more worthwhile came by. For the Dandy who said I lived too far away to date who got a girlfriend right afterwards who lived across the country. For the Unstable Mess of a man who warmed the last shreds of my poor heart before deciding I might be a threat to his life and disappearing. For the Nice Guy who keeps me around, but says I’m not successful enough at my profession to be his partner, even though music is what I live/eat/sleep/breathe.
