The great thing about this journey I’m on, is that through photo shoots and seeing my body from all angles, I’m able to finally see myself in my true form. In the beginning I found that particularly hard. During my many years battling with eating disorders and diet pill addiction, I had a very warped view of my body. It was mostly based on what I thought my body looked like rather than what it actually looked like. I shied away from being photographed from behind, or at angles that I considered highly unflattering. Any photos that I thought made me look voluptuous were immediately destroyed or hidden away but almost always accompanied by secret tears and feelings of shame, guilt and self loathing. I’d set myself unrealistic targets to lose weight and go to even more aerobics classes and sessions at the gym, telling myself I could truly live once I’d accomplished my goals. Now I try to look at myself with kind eyes. It’s not always easy but I’ve come to realise that often the things we despise most about our physical form, are the parts of us that are revered by others and seen as beautiful and desirable. But I’ve discovered more than anything, that the one part of us that determines who and what we really are and shows our true worth, is not the physical shell that we inhabit at all but the part of us that resides within. The shell can be battered, old, worn and broken but if the inner essence of us is grounded, kind, non judgmental, loving and compassionate, and emanates good thoughts towards ourselves and others, the light within us will shine out of us in such an enigmatic way, that even the most ‘flawed’ bodies will radiate beauty in their own right ❤️ #bekindtoyourself #bekindtoothers #bekindtooneanother❤️ #liveyourbestlifenow #gigi_satin #selflove #lovetheskinimin #lovetheskinyourein #bopo #bopojourney #voluptuous #volup2isdiversity

Body positivity is a journey. It’s not a case of deciding to love your body and you’re happy ever after. There are times when you feel on top of the world and times when you feel mega self critical. And that’s ok. It’s about learning to be kind to yourself. A few weeks ago, I had a professional photoshoot with @velvet_damour_official. It was a massive step forward for me, after the agoraphobia I developed last year, plus I gained a lot of weight. I’ve lost a bit of weight since the photos were taken, so when I first cast my eyes over the images, my self critical eyes were in overdrive. But this is me, and I find there’s something so raw and sensual about the images. They’re unapologetically saying, “this is me - take me as I am!” And I love them! Velvet totally put me at ease right from the very start and is the sweetest, kindest, most supportive, lovely lady you could hope to meet. Plus she takes amazing photos! In the past year, since starting the menopause, I’ve gained weight especially around my middle and my belly is bigger than it’s ever been. It’s taken me a while to get used to, and even though I’m working on losing a little weight off my middle to feel more comfortable, I kinda like this photo with all my flesh spilling over. It looks very ‘womanly’ and voluptuous, and I felt really sexy. It was very liberating to do this shoot and seeing the resulting images with a kind eye, was quite cathartic. It’s honestly something that I would have cried buckets over a few years ago. I used to hide away my big booty. Growing up in the 1970’s and 80’s and even into the 90’s, curves weren’t very fashionable.
