Ngati Paoa and other protestors have been occupying Putiki Bay after resource consent was given to develop it without consent from the local iwi. Today, they are blocked by police as developers being to destroy Little Blue Penguin habitat, a species on the decline with climate change and habitat destruction.
Public outrage and eyes on Putiki may be the only thing that can save Putiki now after every route has failed. Spread information about Putiki every where you can - Instagram, Tumblr, Twitter, your local group chat, whatever. Please please please help save Putiki Bay, Aotearoa NZ!
That was the 17/06/21. I can confirm that 3 people were arrested at the protest as construction began behind the police line, for trespass (information here).
Today (18/06/2021) was quiet, however there is a lot of recovery to do. Multiple people at the protest have said that security and police used excessive force of them to keep them away from the boundary line, and Protect Putiki is calling for a formal apology.
Protect Putiki has also claimed that they, police, security and developers all heard the penguins (currently in their mating season) calling within 5m of the demolition of rocks - this would put them at immediate risk of the construction.

The cold air wafting the area makes you tug your taupe coat closer to your chest, letting out a foggy huff as you shiver and inhale through gritted teeth. You hear the car door slamming shut once more from behind you, though you continue walking ahead, turning left and right to rush to the tree you’d picked out yesterday.
Yearly, you come to the same farm to choose your Christmas tree, even after your parents’ passing, as it does not only hold your yuletide memories with them, but also your youth. The place is owned by your childhood best friend’s parents, and you used to help them plant and grow the pine trees each year.
You allow a melancholic smile to grow on your lips, but as you halt in your tracks, the smile fades into nothing and you squint your eyes from a distance. Upon noticing the placard tucked messily on its branches, you rush through the snow and grab the light green banner.
“Sold?” You scoff, blinking down at the material before looking up at the tree. “I didn’t pay for this yet, though—”
“I did.” A voice chimes up, and it’s too thin to be juyeon’s. So you lift your head just as a blonde-haired man approaches you, hands shoved inside his pockets as he stands adjacent to you, head cocked to the side. “Why?”
“Why?” You snort, pointing over to the gorgeous plant in front of you. “This is mytree. I reserved this literally just yesterday.” Then, you take a step, untying a red ribbon from one of the tree’s inner branches, raising it in front of his face. “Thisis the proof.”
He raises a brow and shrugs. “And I bought it just now.”
