Review of Julie and the Phantoms Episode 5: “The Other Side of Hollywood”

At the end of the previous episode, I was skeptical of how the story would continue, with the boys going to the club instead of preparing to perform with Julie.

I expected Caleb’s character to be villainous but he quickly changed my mind with his support for the boys and his amazing performance, then we discovered that he had a pretty evil plan all along. Hats off to the writers!

The continuation and development of Alex and Willie’s relationship really got me attached to the episode—if it wasn’t for that, I probably would not have enjoyed the episode as much.

Another aspect of the plot I enjoyed was the new kid getting to dance with the girl. Despite it making up a small part of the show, it added a positive note to Julie’s situation, as Flynn said.

However I didn’t like Nick’s attempt to sort the situation out. Also, could the ghosts not have just appeared performing with Julie like they did in the second episode?

No one moved, no one said anything. No one had processed what had just happened. Julie was still caught up in her own thoughts, she hadn’t even noticed Willie hit the floor.

here’s julie and the phantoms performing at la pride!! i had the idea for this piece back in december or january and i’m so so happy that it’s finally done! i love seeing everyone’s interpretations on the characters, so i’ve included some of my own headcanons. being a part of the lgbt+ community is very important to me, and i love how wonderful and accepting this fandom is!! and on top of that, the representation in this show means a lot to me. i hope you’ve all had a great pride month, and keep marching on proud! ☺️️‍️‍⚧️

if there’s no emotional willex reunion where willie leaps into alex’s arms then what’s the point

I started thinking about the original willex meeting script where Willie tells Alex how to identify a ghost and it’s just so funny to me coz it does kinda imply that Willie fully thought Alex was a hipster

And I really want it to turn out that in the middle of the bench conversation, Alex made a joke about the whole 25 years thing and Willie interrupted him to go “oh! You’re actually from the 90s!” as Alex was just there like ,,,,,, yes?

Willie’s the guy who gets verified and immediately starts changing his username to tweet as other verified accounts

Luke: just sayin, man, I love Alex but he gets real passive aggressive when people touch his drums

Luke: one time I bumped his cymbal when he was playing and he fully turned off his mic and threatened to push me off the stand

Willie: but I think I’ll be good, he taught me how to drum a couple months back

I do just love that the willex meeting is essentially just

Willie: *runs Alex over*

Willie: ah shit, sorry. I’m Willie, and you are?

Alex: gay. Very gay.

Willie: oh cool! Same!

Alex:how did that work

I don’t think we talk enough about how the couch is supposed to fold out into a bed

Imagine Alex being on his own in the studio, and he’s just chilling out on the bed with a book or a phone he’d stolen coz he doesn’t feel like going up to the house. Then after a while, Willie shows up to the studio unannounced and crashes onto the bed next to him. Neither of them say anything, they just hug each other in comfortable silence as Alex strokes Willie’s hair and keeps on with what he was doing

Yeah I just love how understanding Willie and Alex are towards each other. Willie actively encourages Alex to talk about his anxiety and shows him new coping mechanisms, and Alex is immediately compassionate and understanding about the Caleb situation. They both just,,,,, get each other and want to look out for one another. It’s such a simple thing but it’s so sweet and I love it

I do just love that they made Willie and Alex find each other’s neurodivergent-coded traits endearing

Willie doesn’t like Alex despite his overthinking or oversharing or bluntness; those aspects of him are clearly part of the reason they like him. His anxiety isn’t something that Willie “puts up with” or “tolerates”, they actually bond and connect over it. Alex loves Willie’s impulsiveness and hyperactivity, and he supports their special interest in skateboarding at the museum

They don’t treat it like they’re flaws they’re just accepting because they like each other, they actively like those parts of each other. It’s just great seeing a couple - particularly a mixed-race queer couple - where they’re both neurodivergent and interested in one another because of it, not in spite of it

Willie absolutely started to mask when they first met Alex with the whole Slightly Awkward Politeness but he gave up pretty much the second Alex started talking coz he immediately realised there was no way in hell that boy could be neurotypical

Alex, 1st of June: Willie!! Look at all the rainbows!!!! I can’t believe stores actually care about queer people enough to sell stuff like this! God, can you imagine what it would have been like if we’d had stuff like this when we were alive? :D

Alex, 2nd of June: it’s awesome we’ve progressed enough for companies to publicly recognise we exist but this is so performative. They don’t actually care about us, they just care about getting money. Plus all this merch is ugly and tacky, it sucks

My big question is whether the dark room is A Thing for most ghosts. And not for the usual theory reasons, I just really want Willie to be a relatively new ghost. Dude has absolutely no knowledge of modern culture but he’s surrounded by people who know even less than they do so nobody realises

I just love imagining Reggie, Alex, and Willie goofing off while Julie and Luke are writing songs. Like Julie has spring break so they write for a week straight and when they go back to the studio, they get shouted at the second they try to open the door. And it turns out that the three of them had spent the whole week setting up a pyramid of cards that takes up almost the entire studio

I’m a simple guy, I think about Willie singing a soft sad song about his situations with Caleb and Alex and I want to scream

Reggie loves tagging along on Willie and Alex’s dates, mostly because they’re two of his best friends and their dates are always super vibey, but also because he’s got a secret drinking game. He takes a shot every time Alex gets flustered or Willie says something sweet then runs off, and he’s never failed to get drunk
