#a crown of candy

LIVE

Belizabeth:I am your Pontifex and you will refer to me as such!

All the PCs: Okay, such.

Liam:What’s your biggest fear?

Primsy:I’m incredibly arachnophobic.

Liam, under his breath: You don’t want spiders to get married?

Ruby:What are you doing?

Liam:Laying in bed, listening to music.

Ruby: Nice, what kind?

Liam:It’s memory foam.

Ruby:No, like, who’s your favorite artist?

Liam:Picasso.

Amethar:I’m very strong. I could fight off maybe 20 snails. 21 on a good day.

Jet: “What about straight people?” What the hell is a straight person, the only straight thing I know is the edge of my beloved sword.

guys i’m so upset i trusted plumbeline and look where that got me :(((

Ruby:Hey Liam, do you have a date for Valentine’s Day?

Liam:Yeah, I’m pretty sure it’s February 14th

Jet:Theobald?

Theo:Yes, Jet?

Jet: Can a person breathe inside a washing machine while it’s on?

Theo:

Theo:Where’s Ruby

sometimes i think about how jet’s death in “a crown of candy” was truly the most crushing that any character death could be in terms of narrative impact. like any PC could have died and it would’ve been sad and dramatic and they would’ve been missed, but i truly believe jet is the death that could have and would have hit the hardest.

if amethar dies, it’s tragic but expected. the entire season is built around targeting him and if he doesn’t make it, then the inevitable has finally come to fruition.

if theobald dies, he’s doing his job. he’s the protector of the rocks family, and if he goes out protecting, he’s done what he was always going to do.

if liam dies, he’s the outsider. the rocks family cares for him of course, but he’s ultimately not technically a member of house rocks and was never going to be royalty. while it’s a personal hit for jet and ruby especially, amethar and theo are a bit less affected.

if ruby dies, it’s almost as rough as jet, but it’s also kind of what the narrative expects too, like amethar or theo. ruby is the soft twin, the weaker twin, the lost twin, the second born. if ruby goes, jet’s resolve is hardened, jet gets angrier and continues on her warrior’s path. if a twin is going to die and fate wasn’t decided by dice rolls, you’d expect it to be ruby.

but jet dying? that’s, to me, the most unexpected and the most impactful. it affects everyone. that’s liam’s close friend, that’s amethar’s daughter, that’s theo’s protege, and that’s ruby’s twin. jet is the firstborn, the heir to the throne, the strong one.

particularly for ruby, this is what makes ruby’s storyline in journey take off. prior to jet’s death, ruby was such an innate follower. she had her own goals (the circus), but so much of her character interaction had been characterization by following, mimicking, and backing up jet. jet also of course was VERY affected by ruby, but she was a character much more ready to be an individual, whereas ruby had never expected to become a singular number. seeing her journey after jet is one of the most heartbreaking, soul-tugging d&d stories i’ve ever seen play out.

Tell Ruby I love her, and that she did the right thing
