Dr. Genevieve Guenther’s got it exactly right: climate change is real and it’s affecting communities around the world. Even one year later, news outlets are not giving climate change the attention it deserves. Media need to stop neglecting to inform the public about how the climate crisis is connected to extreme weather and so much else.

In 2014, Rahm Emanuel, then mayor of Chicago, engaged in a year-long cover-up that followed the fatal police shooting of 17-year-old Laquan McDonald in 2014. Following the scandal and the public’s outrage, Emanuel passed on seeking reelection. But he landed on his feet, lining up gigs as a commentator for ABC News and The Atlantic.
The headline for Emanuel’s first essay in The Atlantic, “It’s time to hold American elites accountable for their abuses,” is ironic considering that the scandal-plagued former mayor was hired by two of the nation’s most prestigious media outlets, and that the journalism industry is often unwilling to hold its own members accountable.

Five years ago, Vogue published an article whose headline asked a stark question: “Is Fashion Racist?” It was hard not to answer yes, when models of color – particularly African Americans – were nearly impossible to come by on New York, Milan, London and Paris runways.
Not much has changed since 2008 – in part because there is no institution to hold designers accountable to represent their diverse customer base.
Until now, that is. A former fashion model is launching a social media campaign to bring public scrutiny to designers and brands who do not use black models.
Bethann Hardison, a former model and agent, is organizing a campaign that will launch during Fashion Week next month to shame the designers that don’t include black models.
