You’ve seen the clips of Ukrainian drones and RPGs blowing up Russian tanks, but do you know a good movie - a REALLY good one - about a tank crew?
This one is it: Kevin Reynolds “The Beast (of War)” (1988). Only the happy few have seen it but that can change - you can easily find it on DVD and Blu-ray!
The young director Reynolds was a real talent - an “auteur” - who lost his focus spectacularly when he was asked to direct bigger movies for his buddy Kevin Costner. (Remember that disastrous Costner film, “Waterworld”? Reynolds directed it at Costner’s request but they fell out like Johnny and Amber.)
Ignore that commercial fare and watch “The Beast”, a powerful, mature movie about the Russian army fighting the mujahideen in Afghanistan with tanks and helicopters.
(George Dzundza has created quite a character as brutal Russian tank commander; his acting is reason enough to watch the film.)

Mohammed Isaq weeps as he tells the story of his nephew’s arrest by U.S Special Forces in Maidan Shahr, Wardak province, on March 10, 2013. Afghan President Hamid Karzai, infuriated by villager reports of forced detentions and mass arrests, gave U.S. Special Forces two weeks to vacate Wardak province, located barely 30 kilometers (24 miles) from the Afghan capital of Kabul.
