Critic Leslie Halliwelll gave the film two stars out of four and wrote “WIntry barracks melodrama, finely acted and well made with memorable confrontation scenes compensating for a somewhat underdeveloped script.”

The film was directed by Ronald Neame, who was born in London and had 26 director credits from 1947 to a 1990 short. His other notable films are I Could Go On Singing with Judy Garland (1962), The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie and The Poseidon Adventure. Ronald began his film career as a cinematographer, with 47 credits from 1933 to 1945. His last such credit was for David Lean’s technicolor Blithe Spirit (1945).
