The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry
Ever since I fell in love with Antoine de Saint-Exupéry’s The Little Prince around 15 years ago, I pledged to embark on a little (dork-ish) mission of collecting its various editions in all possible languages. I wanted to have a ‘tribute’ space for it in my shelves that I can label “The Little Prince Around the World,” something perhaps that you may tag as a shrine. I imagine it’s going to be a beautiful babel of paperbacks for one timeless story.
I started with an English copy, of course; I also have one in my own tongue, the Filipino translation that can still make me giggle when I read parts of it. And today, I chanced upon a French edition–THE STORY IN ITS ORIGINAL LANGUAGE! I had to clamp down my shriek when I found it, had to dodge curious looks from fellow book-shoppers when I clutched the copy close to me. I also had to insist that Yes, Ms.Cashier, I know it’s in French and I’m still going to buy it. wink emoticon Frankly I have a long, long way to go with this mission: The Little Prince is translated in 250 languages! Good luck to me, right? If I’m lucky enough, I might even find a copy of it in Braille.
So…I guess you guys know now what to give me this Christmas? Kidding…not. Maybe. Haha!

Ich glaube “die Erwachsenen” wurden noch nie so sympatisch und charmant kritisiert, wie in diesem Buch. Denn bei seiner Reise durch die Galaxie lernt der kleine Prinz verschiedene Arten von Erwachsenen kenne.
Zu recht ein sehr beliebtes Buch.

The last update was too long ago but I’m working on books in the moment which I can’t show yet. I will try to make some new personal stuff and post some older illustrations from last year in the next time. In the moment I’m experimenting to go back to paper and paint, which means I try to emulate all the stuff I do digital with traditional media. It’s much more time consuming and I’m still far from going completely non-digital for my work stuff but it’s fun to see what’s possible and try out new things. Here’s a scene from The Little Prince I made last year. I started with a very small thumbnail sketch (last picture), scanned it, worked on it in Photoshop, printed it out and traced it on watercolor paper. After that I colored the lighter parts with water color, then I painted the background with black gouache. Finally I cut out some things and pasted them on the picture. I’ll make some more tests in this direction and hope to become a bit quicker in the future.

Il toucha les contacts, mais les lampes rouges de la carlingue versèrent vers les aiguilles une lumière encore si diluée dans cette lumière bleue qu'elle ne les colorait pas. Il passa les doigts devant une ampoule : ses doigts se teintèrent à peine.
“Trop tôt.”
Pourtant la nuit montait, pareille à une fumée sombre, et déjà comblait les vallées. On ne distinguait plus celles-ci des plaines. Déjà pourtant s'éclairaient les villages, et leurs constellations se répondaient. Et lui aussi, du doigt, faisait cligner ses feux de position, répondait aux villages. La terre était tendue d'appels lumineux, chaque maison allumant son étoile, face à l'immense nuit, ainsi qu'on tourne un phare vers la mer. Tout ce qui couvrait une vie humaine déjà scintillait. Fabien admirait que l'entrée dans la nuit se fît cette fois, comme une entrée en rade, lente et belle.

Mały Książę poszedł zobaczyć się z różami.
- Nie jesteście podobne do mojej róży, nie macie jeszcze żadnej wartości- powiedział różom. - Nikt was nie oswoił i wy nie oswoiłyście nikogo. Jesteście takie, jaki był dawniej lis. Był zwykłym lisem, podobnym do stu tysięcy innych lisów. Lecz zrobilem go swoim przyjacielem i teraz jest dla mnie jedyny na świecie.
Róże bardzo się zawstydziły.
- Jesteście piękne, lecz próżne - powiedział im jeszcze. - Nie można dla was poświęcić życia. Oczywiście moja róża wydawałaby się zwykłemu przechodniowi podobna do was. Lecz dla mnie ona jedna ma większe znaczenie niż wy wszystkie razem, ponieważ ją właśnie podlewałem. Ponieważ ją przykrywałem kloszem. Ponieważ ją właśnie osłaniałem.
