The wendigo Mr. Mime that’s a crossbreed between Sableye and a purebred Mr. Mime has made me start chipping away at how crossbreeding would actually work in the Pokemon world.

It also made me ask what would happen if you crossbred a crossbreed? What happens if that wendigo Mr. Mime were to be bred back to, say, a Jynx? What about an Gothitelle?

What if a Mr. Mime was initially bred to an Alakazam to accomplish the height and thinness required by a horror movie’s standards for their sought-after wendigo?
Meanwhile, a Sableye was also bred with an Alakazam to result in an equally tall and thin crossbreed.
Taking the Alakamime and Sablezam and breeding them together would result in a higher liklihood of the offspring being the proper mix of both species only with reinforced height/thinness genes from the dual Alakazam grandfathers*, resulting in a more refined wendigo Mr. Mime.

This makes crossbreeding infintitely more interesting as well as that would mean, with the right Pokemon, there is no limit to what the final result would be.

You want a Fearow crossed with a Wailord? You could start a breeding chain that would cross over into the proper egg groups until your cross breed would finally produce a half Wailord egg. With selective breeding, the crossbreed that eventually does give you the final egg could even look very much like an actual Fearow.
Breeding a male Fearow with a female Farfetch’d would result in a Farfetch’d with Fearow traits. Take a female from that pair and breed it back to another male Fearow and you’ll have a Farfetch’d that’s now more Fearow than anything else. Perhaps there’d even be variation among the offspring, like real animals, meaning the trainer would need to carefully choose which of the babies looked the most like a Fearow out of the group.
Farfetch’d, being in the field egg group, can breed with a Wailord, giving you a final result that would only have little bit of Farfetch’d blood in it and making it more of a Fearow/Wailord crossbreed than anything else.

Now what if instead of just wanting a general Fearow/Wailord mix, you wanted a specific result? You’re not limited to just a wendigo Mr. Mime as has already been mentioned, but maybe you want something like… a mermaid?
Taking a male Dewgong**, you could breed it with a female Infernape until a desired mix came along- preferrably a fiery little Chimchar with a Seel-like tail- and you’d be able to breed that particular baby with anything in the human-like egg group. Breeding a female Dewgong/Infernape cross back with another male Dewgong to bring out the aquatic features would also work to ensure all the future offspring wouldn’t revert back to a regular Infernape mix.
For that matter, why settle for a regular white mermaid tail when you could first breed a female Dewgong with a male Seaking or Goldeen? Even a Finneon? Using a male child from that pair alongside a female Infernape could result in a more decorative pattern or tail, possibly even reinforcing the appearances of horns on the foreheads of future offspring or replacing arms with more delicate fins.

Imagine how there would be massive breeding projects with a single goal in mind and how people would rally behind it to help fund it or offer one of their Pokemon to be a part of it. Much like cat and dog breeding, there would be huge clubs of people backing up plans for creating a Gogoat that had the soft fluff of a Cinccino in place of leaves, or the cult following behind horror-movie inspired mixes bred specifically to look like their favorite monsters.

More importantly, though, imagine how there would be groups who helped manage the Pokemon that didn’t make the cut. Maybe to even begin dabbling heavily into crossbreeding you’d need to prove that you have so much in startup fees to handle the food and care of the Pokemon and a portion of all your funding has to go towards local shelters who take in the imperfections removed from the program.

The would-be mermaid Infernape that accidentally got too many fins and lost its fire typing in favor of knowing only water type moves; the almost scary wendigo that somehow ended up with Mr. Mime’s bright and happy color scheme and lack of teeth which rendered him useless to the movie industry; the Wailmer with wings that’s too heavy to fly but not able to swim because it has feathers instead of fins. None of them really have a place in high-budget breeding projects, but shelters start cropping up to take care of them and look into finding them homes with trainers who aren’t as nitpicky about appearances.

Imagine how, every month or so, groups of children are ushered into the shelters for the rejects by parents who explain they can’t afford to pay for a crossbreed but their child wants to start their journey with one.
Imagine the water-type Infernape being marched out of the shelter by a determined little girl who has now named him ‘Goldie’ and is eagerly telling the excited creature about how they’re going to go and be the strongest team ever.
Imagine the winged Wailmer being coaxed out of hiding by a little boy who eagerly explains how Wailords can float without wings- he’s going to grow up to be a scientist, after all, and he had to learn these things- so a Wailmer that evolves into a Wailordwithwings would be the greatest thing ever. His little science mind is aboslutely sure of this.
Imagine the scared little twins who are terrified of monsters and the dark, but the second they see the silly Mr. Mime smile on the gawky failed wendigo they just know that he’ll be their best friend. He’s bigger than anything hiding under their bed, to be sure, and he gets pulled out the door with one twin at each hand.

And just imagine how crossbreeds sometimes happen in the wild.

Imagine how whole colonies of crossbreeds are stumbled upon by some unsuspecting explorer from time-to-time.

Imagine how the natural crossbreeds are quickly classified as a new Pokemon species altogether.

What if that’s the reason we get so many new Pokemon every new generation?

*Seeing as a Pokemon’s species is determined by the mother it could be easily assumed that the ‘base’ for a crossbreed would also come from its mother. In other words, a female Sableye bred with a male Alakazam would result in a Sableye with Alakazam traits, while reversing the parents would result in an Abra with Sableye traits. That in mind, the Alakzam blood from the wendigo breeding example would have to be entirely male to ensure the base of the offspring remained true to a Sableye/Mr. Mime mix. Seeing as the example is classified as a Mr. Mime, the Sableye would also need to be the father, only passing on traits and moves, possibly including the mischievous personality and preference for dark places.

** Dewgong not only has the correct tail for a ‘typical’ mermaid, but also is a gateway into the field egg group, opening up a ridiculous amount of mer-related crossbreeds and far too many to just add here. But this footnote is mainly to ask you to imagine a mermaid Zigzagoon with Infernape’s temper for a minute. Please.

didn’t really think about how fast the spring foliage is growing in regards to the placement of my trail cameras and now i have over twentythousand photos of grass and weeds
