Exactly this. When I hear idiots proclaim “I need my arsenal to defend against tyranny!” I have to shake my head. Here’s the deal, Skeeter: if “tyranny” shows up at your door, it’ll come calling in the form of a tank (my county seat, population 4000, was gifted a fucking tank from Homeland Security) and if you decide to shoot it out with “tyranny” they can put a smart bomb right down your chimney pipe and hasta la vista “freedom fighter.” Go on the internet and find the video footage of the denouement of Waco to get a taste of how “tyranny” rolls, sonny boy.

The AR-15 is nothing more than a non-military version of the M-16, a weapon of war, and  SHOULD NEVER have been allowed to have been manufactured!!  Retired Admiral James Stavridis said that NOBODY should have one in their possession!

Add a bump stock to that AR-15 (legal in all states, if I recall correctly) and for all practical purposes it becomes an M-16.

Also, for my rural folks, speaking as someone who was born rural:

“I need one to protect my farm animals” SHOTGUN

“I’m a hunter” SHOTGUN

“I’m a hobby shooter” MANY EXCELLENT OPTIONS THAT ARE NOT ASSAULT RIFLES

An AR-15 will not provide you a good hunting kill—the meat will be powderburnt and shredded and if you wanted the head, it’s going to be in pieces. 99% of the threats to your livestock are not going to be big enough to justify the power of an AR-15, like yes, rabid foxes or raccoons are absolutely a valid concern, but they’re small, and if you’ve got a bear or some shit on your property the safest thing to do for both you and your livestock is CALL ANIMAL CONTROL. Target shooting with an AR-15 isn’t going to provide you any kind of measurable hit—anything you shoot at will just explode.

I understand there are many valid, legitimate reasons for rural gun owners to want and keep firearms (including living so far in the middle of nowhere that if there’s an intruder, you’re entirely on your own). I will happily fight for you to retain appropriate weapons which you are properly trained to use! But there is no reason you need these giant-ass guns. They serve no practical purpose.

(If you’ve never lived in a town of less than 2000 people don’t you dare pop on here wailing about the “necessity” of hunting, I will personally introduce you to the necessity of shutting the fuck up. Rural people are people.)

hey yeah WHAT PRISMATIC SAID

rural ass person here, when there’s fucking mountain lions killing your neighbor’s animals and you have young children or elderly folk living with you, or when a bear is fuckin’ around down in your cousin’s creek not twenty feet from their front door + many, many windows (which are very breakable if you’re a bear!), or when there’s coyotes coming straight up to your fucking doorat nightand/or eating the neighbor’s dog, then yeah, you are gonna want to own a firearm. Taking away firearms is not a blanket solution, it’s a safety hazard.

However.

Hunting rifles, in those instances, are enough, and have the added benefit of being functional for getting extra food so you spend half the amount of money on meat at costco than you would’ve, and if they aren’tenough, then that’s not on the weapon, that’s on your ass for being an unskilled, untrained, uneducated gun owner,

which is the exact fuckin reason we need to have better licensing laws for firearms in the first fuckin’ place, because your ass is also probably one day of bad luck away from shooting the lower half of your jaw off while acting stupid, and really shouldn’t own that weapon in a first place.

MIA on planet Earth

Where President Donald Trump has truly been missing in action is on climate change, even as last month was the hottest in recorded history. Not only has he ignored what has become an existential threat to the United States and the world as global temperatures rise, but under the vaunted rubric of deregulation, Trump has all but worked to promote global warming. Our view.Opposing view.

Where’s the background checks law?

Evidently, President Donald Trump’s previously impassioned desire not to see mass killing victims die in vain has given way to cold, hard political calculus. Our view.NRA view.

If American politicians do not finally pass the necessary restrictions needed to punish would-be murderers, then the entire country is on its way to Hell. This lack of action is nothing short of sacrificing children to murderers so that politicians and businessmen can get rich. It is a scandal beyond all belief.
