The patriarchy destroyed Beatrice Sugarman and as a form of unconscious revenge, she destroyed her son

Beatrice treats the doll like she would have treated Bojack if her mother hadn’t taught her to be afraid to love

Joseph Sugarman might be the best example of an unintentionally abusive parent on television. All the shitty things he does are done out of love to try and protect his family, but his own inability to process emotions (and therefore sympathize with the emotions of others) is so damaged by the era’s expectations of male stoicism.

He lobotomizes his wife only after she becomes a danger to herself and their child, not knowing fully what the consequences would be, and only after she specifically asks for medical intervention (which, in that time, was very risky and limited). He tries unhealthy measures to make his daughter thin because he is concerned that she is being bullied by the other children. He pushes his daughter away from her education and into wifehood/motherhood because society convinces him that it is what will give her the happiest and most comfortable life. He burns the doll because it is infected with a potentially terminal sickness that could re-infect somebody in the house.

Everything he does, he does with good intentions genuinely believing that he is doing what is right for his family. But the show DOESN’T excuse him, DOESN’T imply that the negative effects of his actions weren’t powerful and permanent, DOESN’T let his good intentions overshadow the very real harm he did.

Beatrice Sugarman is not the flawed mentally ill feminist icon we deserve, but she is the flawed mentally ill feminist icon we NEED

Specifically because she, an individual up against an entire culture of misogyny, DOESN’T overcome her oppression and become the exception to the rule of the patriarchy. She destroys her mind and body through disordered eating/drug abuse, is forced to squander her education, is thrust completely unprepared into the role of nurturer after an accidental pregnancy (fucking up her child for the rest of his life because she was never fit to be a mother), in the end effectively killing off every good part of herself in order to become what a woman was expected to be. AND SHE KNOWS THIS AND DOESN’T LET IT HAPPEN TO HENRIETTA!!! SHE KNOWS, NO MATTER HOW NORMAL, THAT WHAT HAPPENED TO HER WAS WRONG AND SHOVES HER EGO ASIDE TO SAVE A YOUNG GIRL FROM THE SAME FATE!!!

As somebody who was a naturally heavy/large little girl who got addicted to amphetamines in a quest to be “thin and pretty”, Beatrice Horseman may be the most accurate depiction of how little girls like myself develop eating disorders. Not just in terms of what it did to her body image but how she saw others (for example, drugging Hollyhock, which when she admits to it she talks like it was something parental done out of love/to care for her, not malice. It reminded me a lot of how my mother, who struggled with similar body issues throughout her life, wound up passing them onto me). How she acted toward men (she is so swept up and easily manipulated by Butterscotch, likely because she has poor self esteem) and even just the general harsh, critical, nasty demeanor we see her display toward her son in flashbacks (amphetamines make you aggressive and impulsive, which for many people including myself results in a really cruel/biting way of speaking to others). Like I cant gush enough about how well they handled everything about her character, especially shit like eating disorders which hardly ever get an accurate portrayal.

Beatrice doesnt let Henrietta hold her baby because she felt love for Bojack the first time she held him
