BOOKMAN, BEST BIKE ACCESORIESby Grace García
1. How did your idea come up? Why bikes accessories?
We started our company about 4 years ago and at that time it was really difficult to find bicycle lights that were not looking like lightspeed spaceships. So if we wanted stylish products that would complement our bikes, we had to make them ourselves. That’s how we started Bookman – to make bicycle accessories for urban bicyclists who care for both style and function. We had some previous experience with bike lights so it felt natural to develop that as the first product. We believe that biking is the absolutely best way of getting around. Therefore, we want more people to choose the bicycle as their method of transportation. The bicycle is increasingly becoming a part of your personal style and because of that people want stylish, safe and functional accessories. That is what we are trying to do.
2. Why this name “Bookman”?
It’s a long story but the short version is that it relates to our time at the university. Bookman means book nerd or a hard working student. We feel it was a good representation of all the hours of hard work we put in during our time at university, where we all met when we founded the company. We also liked that it wasn’t obvious what the brand was doing. It makes it interesting and easy to remember when you don’t immediately “get it”.
3. Where are you based and why?
I live in Stockholm, Sweden. We’re all from Sweden so it was natural location for the company. Stockholm might be small but it’s a very creative and positive place, also during the last couple of years the bicycle scene has been growing a lot! New brands for bikes, accessories and cycle clothing have been started, there’s also a lot more cycle related events and projects.
4. Which bike do you ride?
I ride two bikes, a vintage Gitane racer that has been converted in to a fixie and a Pelago Stavanger with gears and disc brakes. It means I have a bike for every kind of weather even when the snow is deep!
5. Any future project?
We have several new projects in the pipeline, both extensions of existing products and completely new things you’ve never seen before! In addition to our own projects we also hope to realise some exciting joint projects this year.
