CELESTE CONTRERAS

ForCinco de Mayo, we are proud to present some of the work of a UWM MFA student who has spent a considerable amount of time in our Special Collections in her 3-year graduate career at UW-Milwaukee. Celeste Contrerasis a Xicana-Indigenous artist and activist from Milwaukee who works in a variety of media and narrative forms, such as drawing, painting, printmaking, illustration, installation, animation, public art, and especially artists books. The images shown here come from two of her publications:

  1. Artist in the Library, published in a limited edition of 200 copies in 2019, is a three-volume set created as a reflection of her time as the 2019 artist-in-residence at the Mitchell Street Branch of the Milwaukee Public Library.
  2. Cuicatl Xochitl(Song Flower), an artists book produced in an edition of three copies in 2021, presents a series of ghost images; they are so light they are barely there (we had to really enhance the images to make them visible here). The prompt for the visual narrative is based on the cuicatl, the flowering symbol that emerges from the mouth signifying voice. Of this book, Contreras writes:

Sometimes we lose our voices; in transmission – in translation. Sometimes we disappear. But if you look at a certain angle – it’s right there before your eyes. This book is about erasure and impermanence… . Though the actual images are barely there, those who want to see will see and those who do not look they might not see it.

In her practice, Contreras establishes herself as a contemporary Tlacuilo – a scribe, bookmaker, storyteller – a common visual element throughout her current work. This choice is not surprising, especially in her very specific connection to our Special Collections: Contreras chose to do her MFA work at UWM specifically to work with our department head Max Yela, who is also on graduate faculty in the Department of Art & Design with a specialty in the book as an art medium.

Contreras recently completed the installation of her graduate thesis exhibition and it is fantastic! She will be defending her thesis later this month. Congratulations Celeste!!

Happy Cinco de Mayo! (It’s not Mexico’s Independence Day.)

Cinco de Mayo actually celebrates the Mexican victory over the French at the Battle of Puebla May 5, 1862.

Thisportrait from our collection is of Mexican President Benito Juarez. After reclaiming the presidency post-French invasion, he declared that May 5—the anniversary of the Battle of Puebla—would be a national holiday.

The first Cinco de Mayo celebrations didn’t include margaritas, because they weren’t invented until the 1940s. By the 1970s, the margarita surpassed the martini as the most popular American cocktail.

This is the first frozen margarita machine, invented at a restaurant owned by Mariano Martinez. When blenders couldn’t keep up with the high demand for margs, he found inspiration in the 7-Eleven Slurpee machine. The original retired when Martinez’ restaurant moved 34 years later, and now it’s in our National Museum of American History.

Cheesy Homemade EnchiladasHappy Cinco De Mayo Tumblrs! Cinco de Mayo is a celebration of the Mexican

Cheesy Homemade Enchiladas

Happy Cinco De Mayo Tumblrs! Cinco de Mayo is a celebration of the Mexican defeat of French forces in a clash during the Battle of Puebla in Mexico, in 1862. Mexican Independence Day is September 16. I’ve learned a little bit about Mexico in the past couple years. I live and work in California, and CA used to be part of Mexico. Sometimes when I’m looking at the hillsides, I try to think back hundreds or thousands of years and imagine what it looked like back then. Some of my co-workers are from Mexico and they’re awesome. Some are from Spanish ancestry and some are Indigenous People. Mexican food is amazing, because it’s a mix of so many ingredients and cuisines, going back hundreds and thousands of years. It’s a massive essay to explore all the flavors and influences. My favorite part of the day while working on a landscape, is lunchtime. I usually get steak tacos with all the sauces, and then we sit around and tell stories, before getting back to hard ass work.

This is a dish which I particularly crave, corn tortilla enchiladas, either stuffed with cheese, black beans, or chicken. I usually don’t get this for lunch at work, because it’s sometimes too messy to get from a carry out place. I also like to make it at home because when you go out, no matter how nice the restaurant is, chances are you aren’t getting organic corn tortillas, and you might even be getting genetically modified corn. So I just make it at home.

I made this for lunch yesterday, and I have leftover sauce so I can make more today. I think I need to make some Taquitos today too, because I have all the ingredients and I need more crunch in my diet. And just fyi, the Vallarta recently started carrying a small selection of organic produce, beans, chicken, and some other products. Yay to not living in a food desert.

I recently started trying to crack the formula of basic enchilada sauce. It’s easier and faster than I thought. Basically you’re cooking a roux, with chili powder, tomato paste and seasonings, adding stock or broth and then stir and thicken.

In a sauce pan or skillet, add 1 tablespoon butter, a drizzle of olive oil, 1 small chopped sweet onionorshallot, 3 to 7 minced garliccloves, saltandpepper. Add 2 tsp all purpose flour, 1 tablespoon tomato paste and let it cook a bit. Add 2 teaspoons chili powder, and 1 additional tsp Ancho chili powder, 1 cup vegetable broth or chicken stock, or wine or water. I also added a spoonful of home made poblano salsa fresca that I made yesterday (optional). Simmer to thicken, blend if you want it nice and smooth. Heat the oven to 400. Roll corn tortillas around cheese, I used mozzarella, but you could use pepper jack or cheddar, or whatever you have. Pour some of the sauce in the bottom of a baking pan, add the rolled enchiladas, cover with more sauce, a little more cheese, and bake until bubbly. Yum! Serve with margaritas and beer, and a salad dressed with lime juice and olive oil.

For the Anon who made a foodwish for Salbutes. Happy Cinco de Mayo, guyses!

CHIPOTLE SHREDDED CHICKEN:

[2 chipotle peppers in Adobo sauce plus 2 tablespoon of the Adobo sauce + ¼ cup orange juice + 2 teaspoon honey + 1 teaspoon vinegar or lemon juice + 1 lb boneless, skinless chicken breasts + 3 cloves of garlic, minced + salt and pepper ]

Blend the chipotle peppers and adobo sauce. Transfer into a bowl and add the orange juice, honey and vinegar or lemon juice. Whisk to combine with a fork and adjust to taste with salt and pepper.

image

Season the chicken breast with salt and pepper on each side and place on a heavy bottomed pot. Add the garlic and enough water to just over the chicken. Add in half of the chipotle sauce and bring to a boil.

Once boiling, reduce the heat and simmer for 15 minutes, or until the chicken is cooked. Remove the chicken from the heat and shred with two forks. Return the pot with the shredded chicken to the stove, add in the remaining chipotle sauce and heat over medium-high until the sauce reduces. Set aside.

image

FRIED TORTILLAS:

[8 corn tortillas (4 or 6 inch wide) + vegetable oil]

In a small frying pan over high heat, add about an inch of vegetable oil and heat to 375°F. Fry tortillas until golden and crispy, about 30 seconds per side. Drain on cooling racks or layers of paper towels.

PICKLED RED ONIONS:

[ 1 small red onion, halved and thinly sliced + 3/4 cup distilled white vinegar + 1 teaspoon salt]

Put red onion in a small bowl with vinegar, ½ tsp. of the salt, and pepper. Set aside to marinate at least 30 minutes at room temperature or up to 1 week covered and chilled.

ASSEMBLY:

[Chipotle shredded chicken + fried tortillas + pickled red onion + 1 avocado, diced or sliced + 1 tomato, sliced + sour cream + hot sauce + chopped flat leaf parsley]

To assemble, divide the shredded chicken mixture among the tortillas, top each with avocado, tomato slices and a few drained pickled red onions each. Put a dollop of sour cream on top and sprinkle with chopped parsley. Serve with hot sauce.

Denton TX – In celebration of Mexican culture on the weekend of Cinco de Mayo, Muchacha Fanzine and The Wounded Healer’s Collective, proudly presents Denton’s first Latina artist showcase “Brown Queen: Our Voz Our Arte” on Cinco de Mayo located in downtown Denton. This cultural celebration is intended to honor, celebrate, and support the cultural contributions and talents of rising local Latina artists. crystalgalindoart:

crystalgalindoart:

See that state in the red there? The one in Mexico? That is Puebla. The state where a great victory was won on May 5, 1862. You see, the French thought they had it made, that a swift takeover was imminent based on their army of 6000 soldiers. They were wrong. An army of INDIGENOUS folks gathered to fight back. On May 5, (yes that means Cinco de Mayo) the French sent troops in to attack the city of Puebla de Los Angeles, but were met from the North by the indigenos who would not be intimidated or taken down. When the fight was over and the French retreated, they had lost over 500 men. Puebla lost less than 100. Cinco de Mayo isn’t a day to get wasted and dress up as a racist stereotype. This day is a celebration to remember the Indigenous Resistance that took place, and the victory that seemed impossible. Indigenous resistance continues to this day, from the top of turtle island to the tip of South America. We fight imperialism and colonialism with pride. Please do not trivialize the important celebration of La Batalla De Puebla by reinforcing racist tropes. And don’t you dare tell Mexicans “Happy Mexican Independence Day!” you’ll look like an ignorant jackass. #cincodecultura

It’s back! Please read this non- Mexicans, and apologists.
