I own 33 pairs of shoes, and I’m doing my best to minimize my “collection” and I’m also swearing off buying a new pair of shoes in 2020.

Today’s shoes are the athletic ones.

My Saucony’s with the yellow accents were bought back when I was working for the doggy daycare. That job was a lot of fun, and a lot of exercise, as I was running around like a chicken with my head cutoff. I was always on the move, always chasing dogs, so having a very good pair of joggers was primo. I think I might have put these in for donation, but I’m pretty sure I’m just going to wear through these instead. I remember buying these on sale at DSW, but I don’t remember the exact amount, somewhere around $50.

The Rossignol boots are for my cross country skis, so they’re very specific use boots. I didn’t actually cross country ski this year, (I normally don’t), but Molly loves skiing and cross country, so I do it when she makes me. Got these as a gift, so I have no idea what they cost.

The Nike basketball shoes are arguably the most uncomfortable shoe I think I’ve ever worn, in the sense my feet always hurt like hell after a day wearing them. Part of this is because they have exactly zero support in them, the other factor might be that when I wear them, I’m doing actual exercise. The Blue/Grey fits my aesthetic, and these weren’t too bad, I think $40.

The brown boots fit in this category because these are what I refer to as my “New Hampshire” boots. Whenever I go to New Hampshire, chances are my parents are putting me to work, and these are the boots they bought me to help them with that said work. I can wear these all day long, and they’re insulated for those super cold days that’s known to happen along the lake. As these were also a gift, I have no idea what they cost.

Shoes 26, 27, 28, and 29 of 33.

Holiday Adventure: Yosemite, Cross Country Skiing

My wife and I took cross country ski lessons in Yosemite. It was more difficult than I imagined since you’re skiing uphill and downhill but once I got the hang of it I absolutely loved it. After our lessons we ventured off on our own and headed up to the top of Old Badger Summit. The uphill was easier for me but the downhill can be a bit tricky because the back of your boot is not locked to the ski. I finally got the hang of cutting back and forth by the end of the day but the easiest trick is just crossing your skis like a snow plow. We have some snow camping trips planned in the near future but we definitely need to build up some muscles and ski experience before we head out deep into the backcountry.

This time we camped around 3,000ft lower in elevation than where we were skiing. We stayed at Camp Curry, which is at 4,000ft in elevation. We opted for an unheated tent to save some money, and only a little snow remained at this elevation from the recent snow storm. It was $40 for the night, about twice the price of getting a regular campsite. I’d say the biggest downside of Camp Curry is you can’t cook anywhere on the premise which is pretty much B.S. since they have restaurants and food services not far from the tents. For us this ended up being a good thing because we discovered a cool little area not too far away to get our cooking on. It got down to about 20° in the middle of the night, and we came prepared with a 0° sleeping bag and a 25° sleeping bag and we were both quite toasty. Next time I’m guessing we’ll just bring our tent and hit a campground. We’ll be back to Yosemite soon as we plan to venture further and further into the snow with each trip.
