The pseudo-legendary line for my Fakemon region! I wanted to avoid doing a dragon for it so I went with a Muay Thai grasshopper.

Legends say that these were the first creatures that people of the Awatan region battled. A trainer would traditionally give their Yungras a few locks of hair to signify their bond and unity on the battlefield. They are much rarer in modern times.

Some shinies!

I’ve put EVEN MORE of Reginald Cocroft’s amplified treehopper courtship call recordings with pictures of the bugs making the sound. Fans of little weird sounds, your day has come again

I put together some of Reginald Cocroft’s treehopper courtship call recordings with photos of the genera that make the noise. Platycentrus makes the best animal sound ever I think

I was wondering how these wild springtails and my pet Pheidole ants would interact; would they startle each other, etc., but it turns out the springtails just politely move out of the ants’ way like little pigeons

Giant green pill millipede, Zoosphaerium neptunus, Sphaerotheriida

Found only in Madagascar, this species is the largest pill millipede in the world, sometimes reaching almost 4 inches in length.

Oh boy, lots of confusion in the notes!

These friends are millipedes. They just happen to be the kind that can roll into a nice lil ball.

They are NOT roly polies. Roly polies are terrestrial isopods, usually called pill bugs or woodlice, and they’re a kind of crustacean. There are also freshwater and marine isopods, including the giant isopods of the deep ocean that can reach 30″ in length or more.

Here’s a typical millipede most people are more familiar with:

They roll into spirals for protection instead of orbs:

Here’s a roly poly, or common pill woodlouse:

Pill millipedes and roly polies are not closely related. Turns out rolling into a ball is a fairly common defense mechanism adapted by a lot of species! Including a few mammals :)

I would like to follow up this post with:

Do not ever buy Madagascar Pill Millipedes.

yes people sell them online. yes i want one too.

they should not be removed from their island and absolutely will not survive more than a month or two.

we do not know why, but something in their island diet or environment is *so incredibly specific* that we cannot replicate it. and it’s not just this species – all Madagascar pill millipedes die in capitivity. they live nowhere else on earth and we cannot breed them – every Madagascar pill millipede for sale is wild caught, and taking these rare and beautiful critters from their home on Madagascar is extremely dubious at best. do not buy them. do not do it. find a european Glommeris species or an interesting isopod.

Yeah invertebrate hobbyists have tried to crack the secret of pill millipedes for decades to no avail. Every so often someone claims to have kept them alive over a year or had babies, but can never prove it, or they all still drop dead shortly afterwards.

a lot of pieces of media will show characters catching fireflies with just their bare hands. in some cases they will just land on the persons fingers. to gently be placed inside of a jar..

for people who live in areas who don’t have fireflies, i want you to know that is not made up or exaggerated for those scenes. fireflies are really like that. they are slow and not cautious at all. while camping i would just walk up to one flying in the air and grab it. and it would sit on my hands like “oh ok.” they are my friends.

also i think it’s funny when fireflies are portrayed as round light bulb-ish shapes. they are skinny.

also their butts are yellow even when not lit up. they’re not just all black until suddenly lighting up yellow! they always got little yellow asses!

they are such friends

fireflies our beloveds <3

Thought people might appreciate this video I got of a firefly that landed on my mom’s ring and sat there flashing for about a good minute or two. They really are just like that

I’ve had to let a couple people know that fireflies are in fact real.

If you’re one of todays lucky ten thousand, i’m happy for you. The world is a marvelous place <3
