Day 463: Jessica Gibson

About:

“My name is Jessica, a freelance illustrator born from the riverfront area of Detroit, Michigan. I been drawing whimsical , expressive characters and concept art since the moment I first picked up a pencil. A love of animals, nature, and picture books have always inspired me and led to a career in illustration.
I start doing art professionally after graduating from Wayne County Community College with an Associate of Arts and start getting inquiries for picture books work. Personally loving how children’s books could transport us into a magical, inviting, and fantastic world, I try to reflect this into my work too.

I had produced illustrations for a number of publishers and brands, including picture books, editorial spot pieces, packaging design, and surface patterns. Whatever project I work on, I make sure the final outcome have a real sense of fun!”

About:

“Hello! I’m a digital artist from Chisinau, Moldova.
As you can see, one of the main motives of my art is feminine beauty, which I like to shade in splendid clothes with complicated ornaments and rich refinement.
Also I’m very interested in the fantasy genre – in graphic arts as well as in literature. That’s why I try to add at least a bit of magic in my works.
In my art I try to use everything I’m interested in and I don’t beware of trying something new.”

Day 457: Thomas Moran

Thomas Moran was born in 1837 in Bolton, Lancashire to two handloom weavers. The rapid industrialization of nineteenth century England soon mechanized the weaving process and forced Thomas Moran’s parents out of their jobs, at which point the whole family was moved to Kensington, Philadelphia, just outside of Philadelphia.

At the age of sixteen, Thomas Moran became an apprentice to a Philadelphia wood engraving firm, Scattergood & Telfer. It was in this position that he began to paint and draw seriously, working diligently on his skills as both a watercolorist and an illustrator. In this he had help and support from his brother Edward, who was an associate of the marine painter James Hamilton (From Medicine Man Gallery).

Day 456: Barbara Remington

Barbara Remington (23 June 1929 – 23 January 2020) was an American artist and illustrator.  Born in Minnesota, she was probably best known for her cover-art for Ballantine Books’ first paperback editions of J. R. R. Tolkien’s novels The HobbitandThe Lord of the Rings  and for her Tolkien-related poster A Map of Middle-earth.

In an interview about her association with Tolkien’s works, Remington mentions that she had not been able to get hold of the books before making the illustration, and had only a sketchy idea from friends what they were about. Tolkien, the author, could not understand why her illustration included what he thought were  pumpkins in a tree, or why a lion appeared at all (the lions were removed from the cover of later editions).  Remington became a huge Tolkien fan, and would have “definitely drawn different pictures” had she read the books first.

The popularity of the artwork led to a large edition of the poster as well as work for similar genre fiction such as The Worm OuroborosbyEric Rücker Eddison.  She also illustrated a number of children’s books.

Remington illustrated “Scuttle The Stowaway Mouse”, written by Jean and Nancy Soule in 1969. This is a great example of Remington’s ability to understand and transform the characters into her own. Her imagination and eye for every small detail is impeccable. Remington illustrated the book “Boat” in 1975. It’s a story told in art (no words). Beautifully drawn with incredible attention to details. All done in pencil and ink.

Remington  died at her home in Thompson, Pennsylvania,  on January 23, 2020.

Day 455: Cocorrina Design Studio

Cocorrina is a design and print studio created by Corina Nika.

Cocorrina is a design studio founded in 2012. Based on a small Mediterranean island, we’re enjoying our slow living with our little family.

Throughout the years, we’ve had the honor to work with wonderful brands and people such as Elie Saab, Virgin, Zara, Nicole Scherzinger, Anthropologie, Bando, Pimkie and many more. Our work has also been included in print on Elle Decoration, Harper’s Bazaar & Grazia. We have always dreamt of designing and creating our own prints and products and so in 2018, we expanded our design studio, adding a workshop in our company.

Created from magic and stardust, our shop aims to create magical objects that you will treasure forever. Every detail is crafted to feel like a piece of jewellery that you can touch, use, wear, smell and look at every day.

We are inspired by the mystery of the unknown, the warmth of the dark cosmos and the beauty behind the moonlight. Every concept is born and inspired by the universe, enhanced with a touch of magic and our pure love”
