Day 440: Steven Rhodes

Steven Rhodes is a graphic artist and illustrator best known for his offbeat re imagining of children’s activity books from the 70s and 80s. With designs such as ‘Let’s Summon Demons’ and ‘Pyrokinesis For Beginners’ you would be forgiven for thinking he has an affinity with the dark arts.

In truth, Steven’s iconic ‘Sinister Seventies’ collection was born from his duel love of retro nostalgia and pitch-black humour.

Steven’s licensed collections are available in multiple clothing and merchandise retailers internationally, including Spencer’s and Hot Topic. He has created exclusive designs for brands such as Threadless, Wicked Clothes, Loot Crate, Mambo, Killstar, Creepy Co. and Cavity Colors.

Based in Brisbane, Australia, Steven enjoys the quiet life of a freelancer. He spends his free time exploring vintage stores and not speaking to strangers.

Day 470: Julia Lundman

About: “While for many years I have enjoyed a career in animation and games, over time I began to feel a strong desire to develop my own independent, traditional art. In the beginning I wasn’t sure what that might look like. So, I spent a lot of time exploring ideas in my sketchbook and started creating paintings to find what ever felt right. There have been many experiments, do overs, and frustrations, but the journey has always been revealing.Working for myself has changed my point of view drastically. I have learned to trust my instincts more often, stop listening to doubt, and follow through on my ideas. I’ve been surprised at how often particular interests rise to the surface that connect back to things I loved as a child, especially movies, novels, and music.“

Day 469: Kristin Kwan

From Kristin’s about page:

“HELLO!

I am an artist who makes illustrative paintings and drawings. In my work I use elements of fantasy and allegory to explore themes of life, death, and rebirth. I live with my husband, daughter, and crowd of pets in Lincoln, NE.

When I was growing up my family moved many times, and every new home held mysteries and secrets. I dreamed of hidden stairways that led to unknown attics, or cellars underneath that held forgotten treasures. I knew I could get there if I just kept looking. That low door is still elusive, but when I pick up my pencil or paint brush I can find it for a little while. When I paint I try to bring some of that magic country back with me.”

Day 463: Jessica Gibson

About:

“My name is Jessica, a freelance illustrator born from the riverfront area of Detroit, Michigan. I been drawing whimsical , expressive characters and concept art since the moment I first picked up a pencil. A love of animals, nature, and picture books have always inspired me and led to a career in illustration.
I start doing art professionally after graduating from Wayne County Community College with an Associate of Arts and start getting inquiries for picture books work. Personally loving how children’s books could transport us into a magical, inviting, and fantastic world, I try to reflect this into my work too.

I had produced illustrations for a number of publishers and brands, including picture books, editorial spot pieces, packaging design, and surface patterns. Whatever project I work on, I make sure the final outcome have a real sense of fun!”
