Day 452: Karl Wilhelm Diefenbach

Karl Wilhelm Diefenbach was born at Hadamar, then part of the Duchy of Nassau.

He was a pioneer of the naturist and the peace movements. His country commune, Himmelhof, in Ober Sankt Veit near Vienna (1897–1899) was one of the models for the reform settlement Monte VeritàinAscona.[2] His ideas included life in harmony with nature and rejection of monogamy, turning away from any religion (although he was a follower of theosophy), and a vegetarian diet. When his commune went bankrupt, he moved to Capri and stayed there until his death in 1913

As a painter, Diefenbach was an independent representative of Symbolism. There has been a museum of his works in Certosa di San Giacomo on Capri since 1974.The largest collection of the work of Karl Wilhelm Diefenbach in the United States is held by the Jack Daulton Collection in Los Altos Hills, California.

Day 444: Jules-Élie Delaunay

Jules-Élie Delaunay (June 13, 1828 – September 5, 1891) was a French academic painter.

He was born at Nantes in the Loire-Atlantiquedépartement of France. Delaunay studied under Flandrin, and at the École des Beaux ArtsinParisunderLamothe. He worked in the classicist manner of Ingres until, after winning the Prix de Rome, he went to Italy; in 1856, and abandoned the ideal of Raphaelesque perfection for the sincerity and severity of the quattrocentists

After his return from Rome he was entrusted with many important commissions for decorative paintings, such as the frescoes in the church of St Nicholas at Nantes; the three panels of Apollo,OrpheusandAmphion at the Paris Opera house; and twelve paintings for the great hall of the council of state in the Palais Royal

HisScenes from the Life of St Genevieve, which he designed for the Panthéon, remained unfinished at his death. The Musée d'Orsay has his famous Plague in Rome (shown at the Salon of 1869) and a nude figure of Diana; and the Nantes Museum, the Lesson on the Flute.

In the last decade of his life he achieved great popularity as a portrait painter. Among his subjects were his “Mother” and “Mademoiselle Toulmouche.”

He was awarded a first-class medal at the Paris Exposition of 1878, and the medal of honor in 1889. In 1878 he became an officer of the Legion of Honor, and the following year was made a member of the Institute. Jules-Élie Delaunay died in Paris in 1891.

Hermann Hendrich (31 October 1854 in Heringen, Thuringia,Germany – 18 July 1931 in SchreiberhauinNiederschlesien,Germany) was a German painter.

Hermann Hendrich was born in the vicinity of the storied Kyffhäuser, his parents were Auguste Friederike Hendrich née Ziegler and the baker August Hendrich. From 1870 to 1872 he served his apprenticeship as lithographer; one year shorter than the regular duration due to his evident talent. He then started a job in a Hanoverian lamp factory where he had to draw a catalogue. At that time, he first attended a Wagnerianopera,Tannhäuser, and the wish emerged to be able to draw such musical impressions.

In 1875, Hendrich attended a job at a Berlin art institution where he had to lithograph oil paintings. in 1876, he visited Norway for further art studies. The jury of the “Grosse Berliner Kunstausstellung” (great Berlin art exhibition) disapproved however the exhibition of his paintings. Hendrich then started a job as painter in Amsterdam. In 1882, he married Clara (Kläre) Becker which he met there. On their honeymoon trip they visited Hendrich’s brother in Auburn, New York. Here, he exhibited for the first time his paintings. After some initial sales, the remaining entire amount of pictures was bought by a single art dealer. Using the earned money Hendrich then made a study trip through the USA.

To further deepen his education, in 1885 he went back to Germany. He started lessons by Professor Wenglein in Munich, but then moved to Berlin, and made a study trip to Norway. In 1886, Hendrich entered a studio of the Berlin Academy of Art and received a stipend from the Prussion Ministry of Education and Arts. His paintings were firstly exhibited in Germany.” (Wikipedia)

Day 440: Steven Rhodes

Steven Rhodes is a graphic artist and illustrator best known for his offbeat re imagining of children’s activity books from the 70s and 80s. With designs such as ‘Let’s Summon Demons’ and ‘Pyrokinesis For Beginners’ you would be forgiven for thinking he has an affinity with the dark arts.

In truth, Steven’s iconic ‘Sinister Seventies’ collection was born from his duel love of retro nostalgia and pitch-black humour.

Steven’s licensed collections are available in multiple clothing and merchandise retailers internationally, including Spencer’s and Hot Topic. He has created exclusive designs for brands such as Threadless, Wicked Clothes, Loot Crate, Mambo, Killstar, Creepy Co. and Cavity Colors.

Based in Brisbane, Australia, Steven enjoys the quiet life of a freelancer. He spends his free time exploring vintage stores and not speaking to strangers.

Day 436: Oscar Dröge

Paul (Oskar) Oscar Droege, printmaker and painter, was born in Hamburg, Germany on January 10, 1898, to Franzisko and Melita Droege. In 1905, his family relocated to the town of Waren located at the northern end of Lake Muritz. Droege attended public school in Waren and it appears that he was less than an ideal student.

In fall of 1916, Droege reported for military service and was a soldier in the Germany army in World War I, serving in France and Russia. After the war, he studied with Professor Hans Kohlschein at the Darmstadt Artists’ Colony, which was founded in 1899 by Ernest Louis, the Grand Duke of Hesse. Droege also studied at the Düsseldorf Academy but it was Leopold Karl Walter Graft von Kalckreuth, painter and graphic artist, who influenced Droege to turn to color woodcut in the early 1920s. In the late 1920s, Droege befriended the artist Werner Lange and the two traveled via bicycle and paddleboats through Germany, France and Scandinavia searching for subject matter.

On June 20, 1940, Droege was recalled into the military to serve in the German army and, in 1948, after the end of World War II, he was released from Russian captivity. In the 1950s, Droege resumed his traveling, this time throughout Central Germany and later he traveled to Switzerland and Paris. In the 1960s Droege returned to painting with watercolors and, in 1962, he relocated to Hamburg having inherited a mansion there.

Paul Oscar Droege died in Hamburg on October 8, 1983.”

Day 470: Julia Lundman

About: “While for many years I have enjoyed a career in animation and games, over time I began to feel a strong desire to develop my own independent, traditional art. In the beginning I wasn’t sure what that might look like. So, I spent a lot of time exploring ideas in my sketchbook and started creating paintings to find what ever felt right. There have been many experiments, do overs, and frustrations, but the journey has always been revealing.Working for myself has changed my point of view drastically. I have learned to trust my instincts more often, stop listening to doubt, and follow through on my ideas. I’ve been surprised at how often particular interests rise to the surface that connect back to things I loved as a child, especially movies, novels, and music.“

Day 469: Kristin Kwan

From Kristin’s about page:

“HELLO!

I am an artist who makes illustrative paintings and drawings. In my work I use elements of fantasy and allegory to explore themes of life, death, and rebirth. I live with my husband, daughter, and crowd of pets in Lincoln, NE.

When I was growing up my family moved many times, and every new home held mysteries and secrets. I dreamed of hidden stairways that led to unknown attics, or cellars underneath that held forgotten treasures. I knew I could get there if I just kept looking. That low door is still elusive, but when I pick up my pencil or paint brush I can find it for a little while. When I paint I try to bring some of that magic country back with me.”
