Dani Moonstar being underutilized* is due to her power set. By rights she should be on the Quiet Council and a War Captian, as Storm and Cyclops succesor to leadership of the next generation of mutants, and she has an abundance of experience in doing so. However, her primary power being mistakenly perceived as passive (its really not) is holding her back from being seen as vital on an A list team.
Her primary ability is projecting others emotions as visible and/or tangible psionic energy. At full strength she should be able create psionic bombs, armor, constructs, objects, and even beings out of emotion. However, she’s only known for projecting psionic arrows and emotioned-based illusions.
on top of the fact she’s a brown indigenous woman whose been boxed away in contrast to her white peers. Cannonball not only ended up being regarded as the leader of New Mutants, he continued to do so in X-force, and became a full fledged X-man in the 90s leading to the 2000s. Wolfsbane had her shine in X-factor Investigations and X-force. Magik became a full fledged and a go-to X-man during Utopia era, Uncanny X-men v3, Extraordinary X-man, and even led the New Mutants in a series about the supernatural. Cypher even had a significant role in the Second Coming war and now in the Krakoan age. Sunspot and Karma had a few developments but not as X-men if I’m being honest. While Dani starred and led in New Mutants series, her X-men roles mostly has been assigned as a supporting mentor role to New generations. That’s nice but that’s small for a character who is supposed to be the face of a generation of mutants and X-men.
