“Sunbeam Melts The Hour” by RM Hubbert (with Marion Kenny & Hanna Tuulikki)

The official video by David Hand (http://www.alongbirdalley.co.uk), taken from the album Thirteen Lost & Found by RM Hubbert.

I am more in love with this video than with the actual song itself. Don’t get me wrong: this track is brilliant and distinct, but this video is just so amazing that it overshadows every other element. It was created by the very talented David Hand, who is a graphic designer and illustrator who uses his talent through various different mediums. Through this music video, he showed that he is not just an accomplished illustrator, but also a brilliant animator.

The simplicity to this video is what drew me to it. The colour palette, or lack thereof, helps support the delicate sound of RM Hubbert. The recognizable brand that David Hand has helped create for RM Hubbert is genius. His use of creatures of the abyss has helped create a mysterious and somber image for RM Hubbert - which really is a visual representation of RM Hubbert’s sound.

David Hand really knows how to translate sound into visual elements.

Now to RM Hubbert: what a wonderful, chilling sound. “Sunbeam Melts The Hour” is beautifully haunting. There are definitely elements of Bon Iver, Mumford And Sons, Iron And Wine and Lykke Li to this Scottish singer’s music.

Above everything, he is a guitarist. This is very clear when listening to any of his songs, as the guitar picking and strumming will give goosebumps to the best of us. The vocals to the music that he plays, composes and writes are done by guest artists.

What I love about RM Hubbert is the depth to his lyrics, which is brought to life by his command of the guitar: he writes about death, loss, friendship, mental illness and topics which often leave us lost for words - in a way that is captivating and spellbinding.

Some of my favourite tracks by RM Hubbert are “For Joe”, “Half Light” and “For Maria” - make sure you check them out.
