“A consciousness of living rock and crystalline formations that have learned to form a humanoid body.” Shardmind Shadow Binder from Dungeons and Dragons.

It was a lot of fun to work on this character for Kevin! I miss playing DnD!

Displacer Beast

The displacer beast relies on a light-bending illusion to make itself appear several feet away from its actual location. An attacker fighting a displacer beast becomes disoriented, struggling to determine where the monster is while it counterstrikes with terrible swiftness.

Maybe things were just that different in 1e but the most unrealistic part of Stranger Things is definitely Will Byers oneshotting a thesselhydra with a DC 13 fireball

Well, DCs weren’t invented until 3e, so yeah, that at least is different.

Let’s see… a 1e fireball does 1D6 per level of the caster. Minimum level for a magic-user to cast it is 5th, so even at the lowest possible level it could do up to 30 points of damage.

A 1e thessalhydra has 12 hit dice, so a hit point range of 12-96.

So yeah. Not sure what level the kid’s MU is, or what his DM rolled for the monster’s hit points, but a one-shotting is mathematically possible.
