Night gathers and the watch begins!
The wind carries an unnatural chill!
There are things beyond the northern borders
Mere steel can’t kill.

Demon Lord, Angazhan

Image by Eric Belisle, © Paizo Publishing

[Commissioned by @vonbaghager , one of several canonical demon lords and other Pathfinder demigods they’ve had me write up over the years. Angazhan has had a higher profile than a lot of the other demon lords, since charau-ka and the Gorilla King have appearances in the Serpent’s Skull AP, among other places. And yet, he didn’t get a stat block. If I were to ever convert Savage Tide to Golarion, I’d probably replace Demogorgon with Angazhan. My inability to keep fantasy names straight keeps wanting me to call him “Anghazan”, so let me know if I missed any misspellings in my proofreading scan.]

Demon Lord, Angazhan

CR 28 CE Outsider (extraplanar)

This ape-like monster is the size of a house. It has red fur, grey skin and the horns and tail of a reptilian beast. Despite its animalistic appearance, it has a cruel intelligence in its beady red eyes.

Angazhan the Ravenous King is the demon lord of apes and other jungle beasts. He is the creator of the charau-ka, those vicious ape-men who chatter and lurk in ruined cities. His direct agents in the mortal world are the Gorilla Kings, who are typically recruited from the ranks of violent, warlike mortals and transformed into monsters through the totems of Angazhan. He is the patron of nalfeshnee demons, although many of that avaricious brood are too proud to admit his rulership of them in mixed company.

Angazhan is a terror in combat. Against lesser opponents, he turns them against each other using his spell-like abilities, not even deigning to enter melee with them. When he decides to fight, he does so with natural weapons, tearing into enemies with teeth, horns and claws. Angazhan rarely fights alone, as he summons demons and bolsters them with spells and inspiring threats. If Angazhan defeats a particularly worthy foe, he will return them to life as one of his Gorilla King servants.

Angazhan’s realm is in Ahvoth-Kor, a massive jungle growing along two sides of a canyon facing each other. These jungles are filled with fiendish apes and dinosaurs, charau-ka petitioners and demons of all sorts. Gravity points towards the nearest canyon wall as “down”, and there are places where the gap is bridged by great trees and courses of vines. Angazhan’s fortress sits at the base of the canyon, a black basalt ziggurat filled with his most loyal and deadly followers. The rift over which this fortress perches sometimes belches up qlippoths and other horrors, which Angazhan permits in order to keep his forces on their toes.

Special Abilities

Forced Reincarnation (Su) As an immediate action when it kills a humanoid or monstrous humanoid foe, Angazhan can force that creature to succeed a DC 35 Will save or be immediately reincarnated as a Gorilla King. A creature that successfully saves is allowed to die and can be raised normally. A Gorilla King gains Large size, +8 Str, +4 Dex, +4 Con, a +3 natural armor bonus, a land speed of 30 feet and a climb speed of 30 feet, a bite attack that deals 1d6 damage, two claws that deal 1d4 damage, and the rend special ability with its claw attacks. A Gorilla King is chaotic evil, and is friendly to Angazhan. The Gorilla King is returned to life with full hit points but one permanent negative level. The Gorilla King can be returned to their original shape and alignment with a miracleorwishspell cast within 1 minute of slaying the Gorilla King.  The save DC is Charisma based.

Jungle Mastery (Su) Angazhan ignores any movement penalty caused by natural or magical plant life, rocks, water or other terrain types in a jungle environment. In a jungle environment, Angazhan ignores cover and concealment from plant life, as it actively moves out of his way.

Lashing Tail (Ex) Angazhan may make a tail slap attack as a swift action. This is always treated as a secondary natural attack.

Mangle (Ex) When Angazhan succeeds on a grapple check or uses his rend special attack, he mutilates the opponent. He can choose to either deal 1d6 points of bleed and reduce the movement of the creature by half, or to disable one of the opponent’s natural weapons, causing them to suffer a -4 penalty to attack rolls with that natural weapon and deal half damage. In either case, the effect lasts for 1 minute.

Reign of Terror (Su) Angazhan can make an Intimidate check to demoralize a single opponent within 60 feet as a swift action, or all creatures within 60 feet as a move action. If he successfully demoralizes a creature already suffering from a fear effect, they cower for 1 round, and then are frightened for 1 round per every 5 points by which Angazhan’s check succeeded. An ally of Angazhan that he intimidates instead gains a +2 morale bonus to attack rolls that lasts as long as appropriate for the results of the Intimidate check.
