Where is your nearest garbage dump? Where does the local factory go when it needs to get rid of some particularly toxic chemicals? If there was a disaster, would you have to move? Could you?

Sociologists use shorthand terms like “environmental racism” to draw attention to the fact that poor communities and communities of color are often more likely to be exposed to hazardous materials, and cases like the Flint water crisis drive this point home.

Of course, housing inequality also means that nobody has to dump anything to put poor communities in hazardous positions. One recent example of this is the flooding in Houston after Hurricane Harvey. Over at Socius, Yuqi Lu gathered data on the median household income in neighborhoods across the Houston area from the American Community Survey and matched it with land elevation data from Google Maps.

In general, poorer neighborhoods in Houston sit at lower elevations, and thus are more susceptible to flood risks. This relationship is strongest in less-densely-populated areas, such as rural and suburban neighborhoods, but additional analysis in Lu’s articleshows the relationship is robust.

Thelatest reports are in on human caused climate change. Regardless of whether we can act to turn it around in time, we’ll also have to recognize the fact that not everyone faces the same fallout from environmental hazards and natural disasters.

When Flint, Michigan, switched its water supply on April 25, 2014, it sparked an unprecedented public health crisis. Its residents are still in dire need of help.

The water in Flint, Michigan, is still unsafe to drink — two years after the crisis was set in motion. Badly needed federal assistance has been marooned by a handful of congressional Republicans. And the larger national problem of lead in too much of our drinking water is yet to be addressed.

The tragedy in Flint, and the largely feckless response so far, make for a sorry testament to government’s falling short on this issue at every level — state, local, and federal. These failings, though, are not an excuse for government inaction or a reason to hamstring our national response, as the usual critics of commonsense safeguards have claimed. The situation, instead, calls us to do better going forward. We owe that to the people of Flint. We owe it to Americans everywhere.

Flint, Michigan now has nobody collecting the city’s garbage

The city of Flint, Michigan, best known across the nation for a water-pollution crisis which left an unknown number of residents exposed to dangerous levels of lead that has not yet been resolved, is running into major problems with another public utility. Trash pickup in the city is suspended until further notice, and the infrastructural ramifications could be devastating.

As of October 11, there’s still not trash pickup, and the water is still poisonous.

Oscar
Damn! Look what they did to Oscar.

Nah, not another trophy rant.

I’m talking Oscar Grant, Sandra Bland, Mike Brown, Tamir Rice, Eric Garner, Freddie Gray.

Why we trust what the news say anyway?

It’s blasphemous, don’t get distracted by these lottery tickets and statues.
It’s just fake gold and plastic.

We come from Pharaohs with no masters. What happened? We went from golden tombs to closed caskets.

The Black Plague, they want us to catch it.
Just ask Magic, Malcolm, Martin, Muhammad Ali, Bill Cosby.

It’s tragic. How the enemy can tear down our community and rewrite the history by highlighting our flaws.

But let he who cast the first stone, who constitutes the new laws.
Nah, I ain’t never seen Empire but I serve my own throne.

What I look like begging them to let royalty into they home.

As for me and my house, we’ll serve the Lord!

We crying for votes but how many of us is on the board.

Better yet, when’s the last time you showed up and supported the NAACP Awards? I want what’s mine, not yours.

Fuck getting my foot in.

I’m building my own doors. Hollywood mainstream don’t validate me, yo.

Like Hov say, Save the accolades, just the doe.You in this show for the business, or this business for the show?

Talent and brilliance? Hands down, man we got that shit. That’s why I told Chris, man go ‘head and rock that shit. You got the Juice now. Fight the Power.Hell yeah, I’m gonna watch that ceremony where they gonna let a black man be the Master for at least two hours.

So don’t waste your voice, don’t waste your prayers.
Save'em for the thousands killed in Nigeria, Kenya, Philippines, Syria or right here in our urban areas.

Low America.

Nah, now no one cares.

What about my mother raising a son while working three jobs and still equating to less than minimum wage?

What about me being placed on medication before my system could age? What about that prison industrial system turning Brothers into new slaves?Where’s the outrage? Where the complaints at?

Overcoming obstacles, definition of Black.

Hashtag‪#‎facts‬.

But I guess they don’t make no awards 4 that.
