Haruhara Haruko

I think I made a breakthrough with this fanart, in terms of lighting quality; like my art style is going through sudden and confusing changes! Fooly Cooly is a good subject, then :P
If I did my job right, then you’re hearing guitar chords in your head right now

Yeah, FLCL Season 2 is this weekend!

Thanks to everyone on the Arttra discord for critique on this while it was going on :D

Note* I will try to make quick because I think Mr. Imaish’s career speaks for itself, and any otaku worth their salt should know who he is or at least be familiar with his work. Either through his work at Gainax of as one of the founding members of Trigger. His style has re energized the medium of animation. Using fluid movements, and quick editing. If you have been watching anime in the last 20 years odds are you have seen numerous examples of his work and influence. As well his illustration style. That amazing black ink style you just do not see a lot of any more in comics because it is so easy to shade digitally. That is what I would like to focus on today with this first assortment of his FLCL illustrations found in the three volumes the FLCL light novel. And with that I will let the man’s work and his style speak for itself. I hope you enjoy these efforts, and I thank you for giving me a moment of your time. As always you are greatly appreciated.

“The advance is hip right now but the original has a place in my heart”

In lieu of Progressive’s finale premiering this evening, I figured I’d finish the trifecta and do another homage to FLCL Classic with the boy who kicked it all off: Naota.

It’s been an interesting shift change with Progressive’s tonal and narrative changes from the original, but there’s something about the original that will always resonate with me. So here’s that throwback to nostalgia and a brief glimpse at what 90s character design gave us as a burgeoning cult fave

“Hibajiri” Sketchbook & Digital, 2018

Another quick sketch for the new series. While I’m interested to see where Progressive ends, the original and Alternative still hold my heart. I like some of the animation and designs, but there’s a little of the ‘spirit’ that’s lacking for me in Progressive at current. I told myself I’d wait until episode 4 to pass judgement, so here’s to tonight’s ep really stepping up to the plate ;)

As a side, I found Hidomi’s headphones more problematic to render than I’d like to admit. Also, I love that Hidomi and Kana have roots in the characters Ninamori and Mamimi, respectively. I think it was a fun touch in revisiting the series :)

“Kana-bun” Sketchbook & Digital, 2018

There’s no love lost in the rush of familiarity and nostalgia, for me, with the release of both FLCL Alternative and Progressive’s first episodes. That being said, Alternative really stuck out to me with it’s first episode so I decided to pay tribute to one of its protagonists: Kana.

I feel the titling of the new seasons feels quite apt and have been handled beautifully as well as artistically in their own ways. Alternative’s pacing does feel like an alt-music version of the original season of FLCL which is a feat unto itself. I can’t speak highly enough of it. I can’t wait for more and encourage you all to experience it for yourselves :)

FLCL S2+S3 - What Works and What Doesn’t

The 2018 sequel seasons to the original FLCLOVA may not have the same level of animation quality, but FLCL Progressive demonstrates how a character  like Haruko can function as a perfect villain, and FLCL Alternative reminds us that the show is at its best when focusing on the theme of adolescence.

Ultimately, the strengths and flaws of the FLCLsequels bring new insight into how the franchise works as a whole.
