In the year 1682 the Hafla hammer mill started to produce iron. It went on til 1924 when it ended. In 1934 the hammer was declared a national museum, and the old hammer smiths were there for one day working again.Since then it has been quiet,with the hammer smiths long gone. But the last few years enthusiasts have slowly restored the hammer, and today we were able to forge iron once again in the 333 year old smithy for the first time in a decade.
Full day class with an inspiring man. He’s 68 and picking up a new hobby. I ran him through the ropes and directed him through the steps of forging a long chefs knife. He was incredibly teachable and responded well to the large amount of information thrown at him in one session. I can only hope that when I am 68 that I can still be as receptive to new information and ideas as he was.

In the end he had a beautiful hand forged 1095 and I learned that you can teach an old dog new tricks so long as we are open to the old Biblical addage, “As iron sharpens iron, so do we sharpen each other.”

Two very lavishly made and decorated guns made in Trabzon in the Ottoman Empire.
Former: Late 18th-first half of the 19th century. Total length: 140,7 cm; barrel length: 108,6 cm; calibre: 13,0 mm
Materials: Steel, silver, copper, wood, corals, fabric.
Techniques: Forged, carved, chased, gilded, blued, inlaid.
Latter: Early 19th century. Total length 82,2 cm; barrel length 53,2 cm; calibre 14 mm; ramrod length 58 cm
Materials: Steel, wood, silver, corals
Techniques: Forging, carving, chasing, engraving, cast, gilding, nielloing, damascened with gold.
Both housed in the Hermitage Museum, St. Petersburg, Russia.

Shovel Face - I was inspired by the work of Harlan Mack - @bloodmountainforge to try my hand(s) at forging some semblance of a face into this old shovel. I’m pleased with my first try. I’m imagining some tools that might improve the flow of the forging, raising and chasing. Thanks Harlan!
