Celine Brideau is a born designer. Native to a small Acadian area of New Brunswick, where fashion is only a fantasy, she grew up expressing her emotions through creating, drawing and making clothing.

Following her heart, she went on to study Fashion Design in Quebec, and with perseverance and a bit of stubbornness, she achieved her dream of opening her own boutique, CBrido Collection, in Downtown Fredericton, this past July.

“Fight for your destiny”…  These are the words that 26 year old Celine lives by.  Passion, ambition, and determination are the qualities that drive the CBrido brand – a collection offering Ready-to-Wear clothing for women.  Every garment is designed with a mix of vintage and modern influences, with feminine cuts, and quality comfort.

“Fashion is a lifestyle and it expresses our way of being and our personality. Be strong and powerful in your garment and express yourself by wearing this creativity. Feel it and be the masterpiece of CBrido collection”  - Celine Brideau

What was it like attending NY Fashion week?

First it was a dream come true!!! I never thought that a Fashion show organizer from New York would contact me personally to invite me to Fashion Week in NYC.For me it was an opportunity to show people that I’m here in NB, persevering in this difficult industry and working hard to be recognized as a Local NB Fashion Designer.

The experience in NYC gave me a lot of contacts - designers from around the world, models, fashion industry people and more… I’ve made a first step in NYC and want to go again. Going to such a big city with people who are really into fashion was challenging for me. I didn’t know what to expect and if people would like my stuff there, but I’ve made several sales, so mission accomplished!

What kinds of things inspire you?

It always related to my mood, but more specifically I like the Historic influence; culture, architecture and most important the evolution of the women…I am proud to be a women and I always create according to the women body.

What other designers do you look to for inspiration?

A lot!!! Jean-Paul Gaulthier for his fun, Alexander McQueen for his theatrical inspiration, Yves Saint Laurent for the classic and Balanciaga for the feminity. Just to name other because I can’t stop…Temperley, Comme des garçons, Eve Gravel………..and more!

What’s next for you?

Now I am focusing on the clothing for my store on 340 King Street, Fredericton. I have to produce winter clothing really quick because NYC took a lot of my time and now I’m a little late for the winter production… but it was valuable ;)

In December I’ll have some amazing Christmas outfits… In spring I’ll be a part of the Ottawa Fashion Week and I’ll also try to participate at the Mercedez Benz Fashion show start-up. In the meantime, I am also working to build my website and online at www.cbrido.com. I have more projects up my sleeve, there’s always more…

Be passionate and work hard!

Fashion on Parade!

Those at the Palate for lunch on August 21st were treated to an extra stylish entrée: The Fredericton Fashion Council had a Fashion Walk Through.  It’s aim was to promote local fashion for both retail and fashion designers. This city has so much fashion and talent , it’s time to let it out!

It was a casual atmosphere as the models mingled with the guest and passed out business cards. Those dining took great interest in the fashion that surrounded them and were at times surprised to know it was all local. Those who took part in the walk through were : designers Adrienne Goodine, Sherry MacFarlane and Heather Kilburn from Sable on Blond, as well as Robert Simmonds clothing,Generations,EloiseandCintamani.

Photographer and fellow FFC member, Jeff Crawford took some wonderful shots from the show, which can be seen on his Facebook page as well as the FFC’s page.

We are hoping it is the first of many events put on by the Fredericton Fashion Council.  We are here to turn up the fashion!

Stay tuned and follow us on Facebook,Twitter, Instagram and our Tumblr site.

Bio / A bit about your professional background

Fashion design was my first career choice but ended up studying nutrition.  I have been working as a registered dietitian for 16 years and currently work in ICU, stroke, and family medicine at DECH.  Besides medical nutrition I also specialized in sports nutrition.  I have a MS in sport & exercise science and a sports nutrition diploma from the IOC.  I have filled in for professors who have retired and who have gone on sabbatical teaching the basic nutrition course and sports nutrition course for the Kinesiology department.  I also had a private practice focusing on athletes.  I’ve seen many athletes from recreational to Olympic.  I enjoyed this aspect of my practice however I recently closed my practice to free up time to pursue other interests.

One of my other interest is in dogs.  I am certified a dog trainer and have studied canine nutrition at Southern Illinois Univ.  This past year, my sister (a veterinarian) and I started Dog Dietititan (dogdietitian.com).

What got you into fashion?

When I was in grade 2 or 3 I had a babysitter (she may have been in high school?) who I looked up to.  I would hang out at her house and watch her sew.  This concept of sewing fascinated me increased my desire to sew.  The Christmas I was in grade 3 I got a sewing machine and supplies to make a skirt.  I made the skirt that day and I have been sewing ever since.

What inspires you to get dressed in the morning?

Work.  Otherwise I’d stay in my PJs all day.  I strive for comfort.  I’ve even contemplated wearing scrubs to work…just for the comfort.

Who/What are your favorite designers/brands?

My favorite designers are Cavalli and Vercace.  Cavalli brings his artist background into his designs and this maybe one of the reasons I love his designs.  I like Versace because of the designs created for the female form.  Clothes are sexy and provocative plus  I love the vibrant prints.  I also like the look of steampunk designs.  Probably for the intricate detail.

As a member of FFC, what do you hope to see the council achieve?

I joined the council to connect with other local designers.  I would like to see more promotion of and increased visibility of local designers.  A benefit luncheon with models walking between the tables wearing local designs would be a great promotion but with Fredericton’s population not sure it would be practical.

What’s next for you?

I still have a desire to be a designer but for now it will remain a hobby.  I have taken fashion courses when I’ve been at university and at NBCCD.  Recently I’ve taken MFA-fashion courses from the Academy of Art in San Francisco.  I will continue to take course whenever I can to build on my skills.

Since I’m fascinated with canine behavior I will continue to study this field plus I will continue to work at Dog Dietitian.

Member Profile for September is Marianne Calhoun, Hairstylist, at The Hair Company!

Bio/ Bit of Professional Background

My career as a hairstylist is a dream come true! After 14 years as an Administrator within the field of Human Resources and Payroll, I decided to blend my business background with my passion for beauty &
fashion.

I graduated from Atlantic Hairstyling Academy in 2013, the same school my brother, Emerson Calhoun, had attended 13 years prior. I am now fortunate enough to work alongside him and our fun banter, positive outlook and genuine love for the industry makes us an unstoppable force!

When you hear “Junior Stylist” it often indicates the time you’ve spent working somewhere rather than the skill level you’re dedicated to achieving. I am determined not to let a title define me, as I’m committed
to my success as a hairstylist. When it comes to hair, my personal philosophy is that hair is a constant conversation, which is why I invest time in my clients and provide a free, thorough, consultation with every visit, not just the first. Communication is key!

Tell us about your business, and how you came up with the idea.

I am an entrepreneur at The Hair Company, a L’Oréal Flagship Salon, which is owned and operated by Margaret Henstridge. The Hair Company has 5 Hairstylists, 1 Registered Massage Therapist and an Aesthetician.

The Hair Company shares my beliefs that our profession requires us to use our knowledge, experience, as well as our hands to enhance the beauty of every client. Our team is successful because we share ideas,
observe one another’s work and exchange ideas freely.

I have found that being self-employed provides me the freedom to create the business I’m passionate about, in a way that’s true to me. I’ve always known the importance of being aligned with the right people,
and products to enhance my service offerings, no matter what industry I serve.

The Hair Company just moved to a new location at 740 McLeod Avenue, which is close to the university and overlooks the beautiful Queen Square Park. Parking is free and the business hours are accommodating to our clientele.

Where do you look for inspiration?

I keep an eye on fashion trends, celebrity hair, as well as our local downtown Fredericton scene. It helps me prepare and ease my clients through the cut, color and texture changes they would benefit to achieve a desired look.

I also, pride myself in providing an engaging, enjoyable and relaxing experience. I have an easy demeanor and an eye for detail. I love finding out my client’s hair desires, then utilizing my resources and education to deliver a quality end product with a solid, satisfaction guarantee.

How do you get yourself inspired?

My faith, time spent with mentors in the hair industry, and my love of books. I’ve also been inspired by the salon clientele who have been cheering me on, sending in referrals and supporting my business. What
a gift!

Who are some of your favorite artists in the field?

Vivienne Mackinder is my all time favorite artist, as I’m most passionate about hair design. She’s an expert precision cutter and has an eye for designing cuts.

Sam Villa is a current favorite, as I’m a new stylist. I had the privilege of attending one of his classes this past April in Halifax, NS. He is a wealth of information on all things “hair”, and is willing to share knowledge, tips and tricks. I utilize his free online education, which allows me to deliver advance techniques to my clients. Win – win for everyone!

What project have you worked on that you enjoyed the most and why?

I enjoyed volunteering for the burlesque show in 2013 and working alongside some local stylists, Jason McCarthy, and Justin Fudge. They impressed me with their skill set and speed. I also learned the importance of solid prep work in order to achieve a great updo!

Do you use Social Media for your business? How has it impacted your business?

I just recently started using Social Media for my business and am still learning how to use it more effectively, as I realized it’s the best way to network and promote my services. To date, I created a Facebook group, Hair by Marianne, in order to promote specials and post pictures of my work. I can also be followed on Twitter @vibrantstylist.

As a member of FFC, what do you hope to see the council achieve?

Fashion awareness and the collaboration of great talent in all areas of fashion & beauty!

 What’s next for you?

I am focused right now on growing my business and continuing my education, through advanced classes. I would also like to find some volunteering opportunities to hone my skill set and become more actively involved within the community! Clients can contact me directly at [email protected] or call the salon at 452-0110.

Member Profile for August is Nichola Anderson of Shopperella Personal Shopping & Wardrobe Services!

Tell us a bit about your professional background.

I’ve had the privilege of working for some great organizations over the past ten years, and have met many interesting people along the way. The majority of my career has been focused in marketing, communications and special events, however I now work in the career and job development field where I strive to connect the unemployed or underemployed with potential employers.

I’ve always been an advocate of the underdog and had empathy for those who have been knocked down in life, so this role has been very fulfilling for me so far. I like to help people and open doors when I can.
In terms of education, once I finished my degree at the University of New Brunswick, I relocated to Toronto to study business management, with a focus on the fashion industry.

Near the end of the first school year, I politely and faithfully began contacting Rogers Publishing on a weekly basis to request the chance to work as a marketing intern for one of their magazines. After over a month of phone calls, my persistence finally paid off and I was granted a two-month internship working directly under the Marketing & Public Relations Associate at Today’s Parent Magazine. That was a great learning experience for me, one that turned into a full-time position and three-and-a-half years with the Today’s Parent brand.

It has been much more grueling to build my career since moving back to New Brunswick. The job climate is still quite gloomy in this beloved province and many talented people are struggling. I’m thankful that I’ve
always managed to find meaningful and sustainable employment, but that did not come without great effort and tenacity.

Tell us about your business and how you came up with the idea.

Shopperella is a specialized shopping, delivery and wardrobe service designed to take the time and stress out of shopping. The business idea came out of my love of people and shopping, and my keen ability to organize and coordinate outfits. I’ve been shopping for my family for years, but didn’t consider offering my services to the public until I found myself unexpectedly unemployed last year. After many prayers and encouragement from my dear parents and close friends, I decided to launch Shopperella.

I offer two categories of professional service – personal shopping and closet reorganization. Personal shopping covers a lot of retail areas, however most clients tend to rely on me for grocery shopping and gift
shopping, and one-on-one wardrobe shopping that takes place in-store. I have also done clothing sourcing for clients who had specific fashion looks they needed help finding through online merchants.

The closet reorganization, or what I like to call my Closet Cleanup service, is very fun. I actually go into a client’s home to assess their closet, then start sorting, organizing and making outfits. I typically reorganize their closets into clothing categories, then by colour and/or season. I give them a list of the need-to-buy clothing and accessory items that are missing from their wardrobe, which will help them shop in the future. Once the cleanup is complete, I personally deliver any donated clothing items to the charity of the client’s choice, and if needed, I make a trip the store to pick up additional organizing tools such as clothing hangers and storage totes.

Where do you look for inspiration?

Fashion and décor inspiration is everywhere. I see it in the everyday people that live in our beautiful province, and I find it whenever I’ve been fortunate enough to travel. Even a quick trip to one of my favourite
stores will fill me with excitement and new ideas. I also find great inspiration when browsing the internet, especially searching Pinterest for trends and designs.

How do you get yourself inspired?

Prayer does wonders for me. Taking my cares to God and asking for his help throughout the day gives me a quiet confidence to tackle the challenges ahead. I also keep a few verses of scripture written on sticky notes in my purse and peek at them from time to time for encouragement.

Who are some of your favourite fashion icons or designers?

I’ve had a strong interest in clothing my whole life. Even as a child, I would take notice of women who were fashionable and admire them. My grandmother has always been a well-dressed woman and I very much
enjoyed rummaging through her jewelry, shoe boxes, and clothes when I visited. She also loved musicals like My Fair Lady, The King and I, South Pacific, and Carousel, and would always play one on the television for me.

I remember being awestruck by the costumes in those films, especially My Fair Lady. I also swoon over Edith Head’s costume designs for Paramount Pictures during the forties and fifties. She dressed some of Hollywood’s finest women during that time - Audrey Hepburn, Grace Kelly, Elizabeth Taylor, Rosemary Clooney, Joan Fontaine and so many more. The gowns, and the women who wore them, were absolutely beautiful.

What project have you worked on that you enjoyed most and why?

One of my most enjoyable assignments was a Closet Cleanup I did this spring for a shy young woman who wanted help building a more sophisticated and polished wardrobe. Once I looked through her closet and spoke with her, I realized she already owned many useful clothing pieces but lacked confidence in herself, which affected her ability to coordinate outfits without a great deal of second guessing.

My main focus became reassuring her of her clothing choices, and then showing her how nicely things fit her body. By the time I left, she was grinning from ear to ear and excited about what to wear next. That particular assignment was actually more about providing encouragement than cleaning and reorganizing.

I really enjoy the people I meet through my shopping and wardrobe service. Everyone has a story, and I’m very thankful I get to hear some of them.

Do you use Social Media for your business? How has it impacted your business?

I use Facebook to connect with fellow shoppers from across the web, both near and far. The Shopperella page alerts fans about local shopping events and sales, new store openings including restaurants and cafes, and great local products. I also update the page regularly with clothing, accessory, and beauty posts, home décor ideas, yummy recipes, and anything else my fans might enjoy. Facebook has been a useful, free marketing tool for me, especially in terms of reaching a younger clientele.

The Facebook page can be found at www.Facebook.com/ShopperellaPersonalShopping

As a member of FFC, what do you hope to see the council achieve?
My hope is that the FFC would organize an initiative geared at encouraging and empowering underprivileged children in the Fredericton area through fashion. By partnering with local retailers and businesses the FFC could provide a group of deserving children with a much needed back-to-school wardrobe. It’s important to help people in the community, especially children.

What’s next for you?

Believe it or not, I will soon need to start preparing for the Christmas shopping season. Many people prefer to have their gifts purchased months in advance so they can relax and enjoy the holiday, while others want help finding the perfect outfit for a Christmas party. Clients can contact me directly at [email protected]

or visit my website www.shopperella.ca for more information.

The featured member profile this month is Bronwen Robbins!

Bio / A bit about your professional background

I am a Fredericton girl, born and raised, except for that three year period where I was a Jamaican girl. I’ve always loved dressing up: I spent many of my teenaged years pretending to be an Elf in the woods at a local Live Action Role Playing chapter and Halloween has always been a big to do for me. I graduated from the New Brunswick College of Craft and Design in 2002 from the surface design studio and that is when I discovered the cosplay hobby. Cosplaying provided me with a new outlet for my love of dressing up, but I wanted to improve my skills, so in 2005 I went back to the college and entered the fashion design studio. I graduated in 2007 with Principal’s Distinction and honours. Along the way I started winning awards for my costumes at conventions and realised that I could turn this passion for costume design into a business, so in 2012 with some coaxing from teachers at the school, I came back and did the graduate studies program with an emphasis on building skills to start and run my own business.

Tell us about your business and how you came up with the idea.

Delirium’s Edge Designs is a custom costume design business that caters to people who like to dress up for conventions, live action role playing and similar geeky fun. I reproduce the outfits of known characters from cartoons, comic books as well as original sketches. It grew out of a lifelong love of costume design and dressing up. The

name comes from a screen name I’ve used on the internet on sites such as deviantART and cosplaylab.com; since it was usually attached to my creative works such as drawing and cosplay it seemed like the logical choice for the name of my new costume design business. The butterfly logo is actually my initials B and R, I’d been toying with making
it my signature for years and I guess now in a way it is!

Where do you look for inspiration?
I’m a big geek at heart and proud of it, so most of my inspiration comes from things like comic books, and cartoons, but I do also have a strong love of history and particularly fashion history, so my designs tend to reflect that. I also love to learn new skills constantly, so if something I see presents a new challenge or a chance to learn a new skill I find that very inspiring.

How do you get yourself inspired?

It depends. If it is something for myself, it is usually a matter of my liking a particular character enough to want to dress up as them, or I will look through books and pictures of historical fashion design. If it is a client I am working with, be it an original sketch design of their own that they want transformed into an actual garment or just a character they really love from some media, it is their passion and excitement that gets me all
fired up.

Who are some of your favourite artists in your field?

Michele Clapton who is the lead designer on HBO’s Game of Thrones comes to mind. I love how she over thinks everything on that show. Not only are her designs amazing and beautiful, but she has put thought into what kind of fabrics and dyes would be accessible or practical for the people of the different lands and reflects that in her designs.

Eduardo Castro who is the lead design on ABC’s Once Upon a Time is another costume designer whose work I find interesting and inspiring. He fuses Victorian, fantasy, and steampunk styles, along with the original Disney character designs and then throws in a dash of modern flare and materials. Since the show is nearly entirely done with green screening, I feel like his costumes really create most of the feeling and mood for the show. I just love to see what he has come up with next and how he is
going to portray all my favorite Disney and fairy tale characters though what they wear.

What project have you worked on that you enjoyed most and why?

I pretty much enjoy everything I have made! It is all about the challenge for me. If a costume requires me to learn a new skill or use a new material that is great: I just spent nearly half a year fabricating an entire suit of armor from a heat molding plastic called Worbla, for example!
Actually, I’ve really enjoyed my most recent project; I decided to make it just because of a pair of leather goggles I bought when I was at a convention in Toronto in May. Maybe because I was just making it purely for fun, or because it is a twist on an 1880’s bustle dress and coat and I am particularly drawn to that era, whatever the reason, from just
picking out the fabrics and materials to the many pleats that needed pleating, I loved the entire process and can’t wait to wear it.

Do you use Social Media for your business? How has impacted your business?

I do, but my grasp on it is probably not as strong as it could be. I seem to benefit from good old fashioned social networking more then anything. Be it from former clients telling others who are looking to come to me, or recommendations from other cosplayer peers who know me from judging or helping out at conventions, most of my business is from old fashioned word of mouth actually!

As a member of FFC, what do you hope to see the council achieve?

I am pretty sure the sky is the limit when it comes to this, but I guess I would love to see some workshops or networking events happen. We have a pretty amazing community of retailers, designers and seamstresses in Fredericton and it would be great for
everyone if there were more chances for sharing ideas and experiences.

Member Profile for June is Kayley Reed!

Bio / A bit about your professional background:

I’m from a small town in Alberta (everyone thinks I’ve traveled the wrong direction, but I honestly love Fredericton as a place to grow!). I just graduated from the University of New Brunswick’s Renaissance College program with a B. Phil in Interdisciplinary Leadership Studies (I know, it’s a mouthful!) and I have a passion for everything expressive! I’ve been modelling for about 5 years now as a hobby, and have been really pursuing it more the past year - I was signed with CITY Models in Halifax last year, and have walked Atlantic Fashion Week among other shows and modeled across Atlantic Canada, in Calgary, and Toronto. This past year I also began fashion styling and writing for magazines and blogs. Since January, I’ve been published in New York City, Toronto, and Vancouver. Now that I’m done school I’m starting to really focus on fashion and am trying to gain traction, all while learning as much as I can!

~Tell us about your business and how you came up with the idea:
So in January 2014 a close friend, Kyle MacNevin, and I came up with this idea to merge the worlds of fashion and mental health. We were both struggling with personal mental health issues, and both found bliss in fashion. The idea soon turned into a project, which is now an upcoming social business called Wear Your Label. We’re a conscious clothing line that uses positive designs, carefully chosen styles and textiles, to reinforce self-acceptance and awareness of mental health. We’ve been researching, developing, and pitching to various audiences/investors/mentors for the past few months, and are now very close to launching our first summer line! All garments and packaging are eco-friendly, we use certified suppliers that enforce fair worker treatment, and a portion of all sales will be donated back into mental health research & organizations. www.wearyourlabel.ca
.
~Where do you look for inspiration?
Travelling is one of my biggest inspirations. I spent last summer travelling Europe for 5 weeks, and then spent 9 weeks in Rwanda. Learning from other people, pushing my limits, seeing new sights, and experiencing new things really keep me going. I also draw inspiration from young people around me; especially those who are working hard to make their passions come alive. Some of my best friends are also my role models.
~How do you get yourself inspired?
Self-care is something super important that we’ve basically mandated while working on Wear Your Label. Taking personal time to just reflect and recharge, playing my favourite music, and going on walks with no destination gets mentally prepared. You can’t help others without first helping yourself.
~Who are some of your favourite artists in your field?
Gabrielle Coco Chanel is hands down my favourite designer of all time. Not just because of her designs, but her counter-culture spirit. She paved the way for women couturiers of the time, and she didn’t take no for an answer. She did whatever it took to change the status quo for women’s fashion, and the introduction of the jersey dress was a complete culture shift. It’s exactly what we’re trying to do with Wear Your Label - change the perception of mental health from a negative to a positive one, through fashion. It’s two industries that clash naturally but we’re determined to make our mark and create a legacy.
~What project have you worked on that you enjoyed most
and why?
Modelling for Atlantic Fashion Week and the Heart Truth Fashion Gala were amazing experiences; I love doing things that hold significant meaning to them. AFW is about showcasing local talent, and the Heart Truth benefits the Heart and Stroke Foundation so I got to meet some amazingly strong women. BUT (and I’m biased) working on Wear Your Label has been the most enjoyable so far. Working on WYL has been my saving grace while recovering from an eating disorder, and has given me the opportunity to share my story and help others… all within the realms of fashion!
~Do you use Social Media for your business? How has it
impacted your business? We do! As young entrepreneurs it has been really helpful to use social media platforms that our potential consumers are already using, and it’s also been an awesome way to connect with people and spread our message - whether or not we’re selling something, it’s been rewarding just to share mental health facts and inspiring stories. ~As a member of FFC, what do you hope to see the council
 achieve?
I would love for FFC to become the ultimate platform for all things fashion! I think we’re on the right track, but I hope to see more connections built and more collaborative events happening in the future. We have so much talent here and it’s about time we start honing in on it!
~What’s next for you?
This summer I’m working out of UNB’s Summer Institute, Foundry program which is an accelerator for entrepreneurs. We’re launching the summer line in the next few weeks, and continue to grow from there. I hope to keep modelling, styling & writing and just get myself out there as much as I can. An Interview with Tina Robinson, Owner of Lovely Betty.

Tell us about your business and how you came up with the idea.
The idea for Lovely Betty stemmed from a long-time love of vintage clothing, ecclectic styles, and well made items. I was changing careers, and trying to figure out how I could be a part of the solution to reducing
the mountain of clothing in a world of fast fashion. I had fond memories of a unique store in my teen years on the west coast. I had wished that someone would open a shop like that in Fredericton, but then I thought why not just open one myself. 5 weeks later, I was standing in my own store front wondering how it had happened.

Where do you look for inspiration?
I get inspiration from from those who don’t follow specific trends,
but rather, dress to express their personality.

How do you get yourself inspired?
I love to intentionally mis-match and clash colors and prints. It
often gives me more ideas.

Who are some of your favourite artists in your field?
I greatly admire the originator of the upcycled sweater coat, Katwise.
She is a major inspiration for Lovely Betty’s “Betty Made” upcycled clothing. I love not adding to the landfill of disposable clothing.

Do you use Social Media for your business? How has impacted your business?
Facebook has definitely helped us reach into the corners of
Fredericton and beyond. We advertise there regularly and its a great
way to interact with our customers and consignees.

As a member of FFC, what do you hope to see the council achieve?
I hope to see the council successful in their goal of bringing
together designers, artisans, and business owners. I would love to see
our small but growing creative community working together, and
inspiring, guiding, and encouraging each other to reach their goals
and contribute to a vibrant local network.

What’s next for you?
We are in the midst of taking Lovely Betty to a the next level,
creating an online store, and we are also planning on taking the shop
on the road this summer in our antique Lovely Betty VW bus. Many
exciting adventures and pop-up-shop events await Lovely Betty’s
future!
