Cabanel was a French painterofhistorical,classicalandreligious subjects in the Academic style. He was also well known as a portrait painter. His Naissance de Venus is one of the most recognisable examples of the French Academic style.

Henri Fantin-Latour (1836–1904, France)

Fantin-Latour was a French painter and lithographer best known for his flower paintings. He was the most celebrated French still-life painter of the 19th Century and a friend to many artistic figures of the time (including Manet and Whistler), many of whom he painted.

Eugène Galien-Laloue (1854–1941, France)

Street scenes2

Galien-Laloue was a Frenchlandscape artist of the Belle Époque. He was a populariser of street scenes, usually painted in autumn or winter, and his work has left us some of the most vivid depictions of everyday Paris, populated by shoppers, horse-drawn carriages, trolley cars and omnibuses.

Gustave Moreau, La chimère (1876)
Regarded by many as being an important precursor to surrealism, Moreau’s symbolic illustrations, which are often rooted in biblical tradition or mythology, consciously depict a dream like world, void of any realism but rich in emotion and imagination.

This painting perfectly encapsulates the transforming landscape of Paris with its broad boulevards, and uniform yet decorative architecture. Unusually for Caillebotte this painting is very realistic and uses flat colours, similar to the work of American painters like Edward Hopper, which contrast greatly with his typically impressionistic pallet and style.
