Glaurung mesmerizing Niënor

Whenever I saw the dragons ilustrated by Tolkien, I couldn’t help but seeing the resemblance with eastern dragons. Mostly because of those long and stylized bodies. I know he probably had in mind regular european dragons, but I thought it would be fun depicting Glaurung differently than usual.

“At last, in the year when Eärendil was seven years old, Morgoth was ready, and he loosed upon Gondolin his Balrogs, and his Orcs, and his wolves; and with them came dragons of the brood of Glaurung, and they were become now many and terrible. The host of Morgoth came over the northern hills where the height was greatest and the watch least vigilant, and it came at night upon a time of festival, when all the people of Gondolin were upon the walls to await the rising sun, and sing their songs at its uplifting; for the morrow was the great feast that they named the Gates of Summer.”

Glorund sets forth to seek Turin

by J. R. R. Tolkien, September 1927

Glorund (later Glaurung) is described in The Book of Lost Tales as a “great worm,” with “scales of polished bronze,” and “breath a mingled fire and smoke”, who destroys the dwellings of the Rodothlim (fugitive Noldorin elves).  He gathers their wealth into a hoard and takes their home as his lair.

The story was changed slightly for the book ‘The Children of Hurin.’

The painting was done to illustrate The Silmarillion.

The smoke clears, just a little. Glaurung lands back on all four feet, the ground shaking at the impact. His head turns towards Maedhros.

There is blood spilling out from between his jaws, dripping thick down onto the ground. More pours out from underneath him, spattering across the dirt as the wound in his belly ripples and the torn flesh convulses.

Glaurung sees him. He snarls, blood spraying from his mouth.

Maedhros raises his sword.

Glaurung snarls again, but it’s weaker. His eyes dart to the side. Once, and then again. Maedhros sets his stance. His sword ripples bright through the air, cutting through the smoke swirling around them.

When I first read this bit, I thought it was so cinematic! Which is not my forte at all but I wanted to doodle something and kept coming back to this…

Glaurung was the first of the fire breathing dragons in middle earth. Though he was not part of the winged race that would later come, he still managed to terrorize and burn many elven lands until he was driven back by Fingon and his archers. After Being contained in Angbad for another 2 centuries, Glaurung had become even more powerful and had fathered a brood of Dragons to wreak havoc upon the elves of beleriand. After deceiving Turin of Turambar into marrying his sister, Nienor, whom he had put under the dragons spell, he frequently attacked near the home of Turin, provoking him until Turin had finally set out to defeat Glaurung. Setting out with three men, one had fled out of fear and the other was crushed by rocks, Turin had managed to plung his sword, Gurthang into Glaurungs belly. Just before Glaurung died, he released his spell from Nienor, causing her to realize Turin to be her brother and cast herself into the river below and Turin to throw himself upon his sword.

Hatchling

So the other day Tumblr was like ‘yo, you got 250 followers now, you gonna do anything with that?’ and I was like 'what is the culture of the tumbler, do we still do that?’ and I was led to believe that a making of a thing and a nice message along the lines of coloring a pic for your parental figure of choice and slapping it on the fridge was basically how we do.

Of course, I had to go try to find something significant to Tolkien and the number 250, and I searched for like, a whole six minutes, and the best I came up with in that time was that maybe that could be around the time Glaurung hatched.

Who’s Daddy Melkor’s precious lil monster? This guy.

(And what is the next accepted milestone for the tumbler? Because I feel like I missed a few prior to this.)

tolkienmatters:

“Again after a hundred years Glaurung, the first of the Urulóki, the fire-drakes of the North, issued from Angband’s gates by night. He was yet young and scarce half-grown, for long and slow is the life of the dragons, but the Elves fled before him to Ered Wethrin and Dorthonion in dismay; and he defiled the fields of Ard-galen. Then Fingon prince of Hithlum rode against him with archers on horseback, and hemmed him round with a ring of swift riders; and Glaurung could not endure their darts, being not yet come to his full armoury, and he fled back to Angband, and came not forth again for many years. Fingon won great praise, and the Noldor rejoiced; for few foresaw the full meaning and threat of this new thing.”

Niënor Níniel from JRR Tolkien’s #Silmarillion

“ Glaurung stirred for the last time ere he died, and he spoke with his last breath, saying:
‘Hail, Nienor, daughter of Húrin. We meet again ere the end. I give thee joy that thou hast found thy brother at last. And now thou shalt know him: a stabber in the dark, treacherous to foes, faithless to friends, and a curse unto his kin, Túrin son of Húrin! But the worst of all his deeds thou shalt feel in thyself.’ ”
