some concepts for a new personal project- “49”

i was inspired after reading about the city of abandoned ships in san francisco harbor during the gold rush.

i imagine it as an open world game where you can explore the floating city and participate in a slew of fun “activities”.

i wanted it to feel like a western on the water.

Gold Rush cider

A year ago, taylor swift wrote an album for the hopeless romantics, the lonely yearners, touch starved kids, the people who peaked in high school, single parents who gave all that they had, the ones who never got over their first love, those who live in a fantasy, grief stricken young people, the entire lgbtq+ community, mentally ill and misunderstood kids, fierce women who’s souls are tired of being second to men, broken hearted divorcées, glamorous and beautiful ingénues who don’t quite belong, sexy murderers, bisexual former gifted kids, teens who are terrified of getting older, people with unrequited crushes, cynical bitches who fell in love and for the dreamers, for us.

Following the discovery of gold outside of San Francisco in the 1840s, thousands flocked to the city on the way to the gold fields. While some traveled across land, but many chose to get there by ship, and as a consequence of majority of the crews also abandoning ship to go and look for gold alongside the passengers.

The result was San Francisco Bay quickly filling up with empty ships like an airport car-park as captains were left with no crew to sail their boats on to their next destination. Eventually the ships were themselves stripped of furnishings and anything else useful, and some were consequently brought ashore to be used as building materials in the city proper.

Amusingly a high number of the folks that sailed to San Francisco during the gold rush were actually Australians, who came to the city in such numbers it lead to the establishment of an unofficial Sydney Town. The local San Franciscans didn’t take kindly to the arriving Australian gold prospectors, whom they called “Sydney Ducks“, and accused them of bring crime and drunkenness to the city.

Many of these Australian prospectors would end up returning home (followed by many Americans going the opposite direction) following the discovery of gold in Australia in 1851, however.

Necessity is the mother of invention

Today we observe National Inventors Day, celebrated each year on Thomas Edison’s birthdate. Edison held 1,093 patents – a record for sure!

We are sharing this image from The Mission Indian newsletter dated February 1935. It depicts a home-made plow from the gold rush days, which they describe as “crude,” but in those days, people had to make do with what they had available. The resourcefulness and perseverance of these early pioneers was remarkable.

What is an invention you can’t live without?

We have digitized and made available online the newsletters from our series, The Mission Indian, which you can view here
