there’s something so compelling about stories where a character’s virtues intensify into flaws that lead to their downfall. loyalty and love becoming so all-consuming that compassion outside of them ceases to exist. duty overwhelming any moral compass until order becomes more important than justice. selflessness so intense it becomes self-destruction. let me watch while whatever saved the hero in the beginning destroys them. let me see them fall to their own worst impulses disguised as what once made them good.

I’ve been thinking a lot lately about the reverse. What starts out as someone’s fatal* flaw becomes their saving virtue because it was what was needed for the situation at hand. Outside of the very hm, not heavy-handed per se but simplified maybe?, variations in lots of children’s and teen’s literature I don’t feel like I know any examples. But I yearn.

*uh, not literally… unless of course necromancy or timelines in which case sure, literally!

May I recommend the grandmaster of demonic cultivation? The protagonist basically ends up on a merry go round of salvation and damnation because he’s one of, like, 3 people in his generation who have a moral compass instead of knee-jerk loyalty to their in-group.
