Chapter 3: A Thin, Thin Thread
Lady Iwaldis’ hands trembled as she opened the doors to the queen’s quarters. She had been Mistress of the Court for Queen Frigga for many years, and never she felt this troubled before seeing her majesty. The rumours of her own daughter consorting with the prince had spread like wildfire, and she could feel her cheeks flush with shame every time she heard it mentioned in the hushed voices of the palace staff.
And she knew the truth behind those rumours. Sigyn had confirmed them the day before.
Steeling herself, Iwaldis pushed the doors open. As routine, she opened the curtains and the windows that faced the gardens. The morning breeze carried with it the scent of flowers and grass, and the sound of birds and water flowing from the fountains drifted inside the bedroom.
“Your majesty?” she called to the closed bed canopy.
“Good morning, Iwaldis!” Frigga sat on the bed and Iwaldis opened the curtains.
For the first time in a lifetime, she could not look the queen in the eye. As Iwaldis prepared the bathing room for the queen’s morning ablutions, she could hear the kitchen maids come in. They carried Queen Frigga’s breakfast inside and left the trays in the sitting room as per their usual instructions.
The Queen’s reignments were promptly laid on the bed, and Lady Iwaldis sorted out the proper jewelry while her majesty was inside the bath chamber. Several deep breaths did nothing to soothe her nervousness, in fact, it made it worse. She knew they would have to discuss it and try to come up with a solution, though in her mind, she already had an idea. She only hoped the Queen would offer her assistance in the matter.

Chapter 2: Everyone Has a Secret, Can They Keep It?
The cool breeze of the hours before sunrise shook Sigyn awake. It was time to leave. Drawing a sigh, she half heartedly tried to escape Loki’s firm grip.
“Not yet,” he mumbled with a groan, and tightened his embrace.
“It’s almost sunrise, Loki,” she whispered. “I don’t want to leave any more than you don’t want me to go, but I must.”
Loki opened his eyes and blinked. Her eyes were red, her hair mused, and her make up faded. And still she was a vision, one he didn’t want to part with just yet.
“We can share the bath if you let me out of the bed,” she suggested with a tiny wiggle of her brows.
Loki responded with a huge grin, and wrapped his arms around her, carrying her to the bathroom and tripping over the sheet at his feet. Sigyn giggled all the way, making Loki’s heart jump with joy. Her laughter was the most beautiful sound for him. Or perhaps, the second most beautiful sound. First place was held by all the sounds that escaped her throat everytime he made love to her. And those sounds echoed in the bath chamber before Loki would let her part from him.
By the time Sigyn sprinted out of the bathroom, the sun was already peeking onto the land. The hour was later than she would’ve liked, but she could not regret what Loki did to her during the bath. She hastily grabbed her clothes from the floor, not bothering with the undergarments, and pulled her dress over her head with little ceremony.
Loki walked around the room still naked, watching her, regretting already having to let her leave.
“Don’t go just yet,” he said softly, biting his lip.
“You and I both know I have to.”
Loki held her hand and pulled her close. “Let them find us.”
“Such an adrenaline rush!” she mused. “And what excuse would we use?”
“You’re the Queen’s messenger, you could be here on my mother’s orders.”
“Of course. Wearing last night’s clothes, looking fresh out of the bath, and thoroughly fucked,” she said with a chuckle. “We wouldn’t fool anyone.”

The balcony offered little cover in which to hide from the party held inside the hall, and her backside was still visible for anyone who ventured too close to the window. But it was enough, for now.
