Furudate-sensei’s little one-liners / Q&As from the final Haikyuu guidebook! Of course I must collect them all! LET’S GO!!!

*AS ALWAYS I’m still learning the language and cannot guarantee complete accuracy!

All single character comments from different teams!

Daishou Suguru: A serious and hardworking person. If he could learn to be a bit more lazy, I have a feeling it would be good for him. But he’s also good just the way he is. [oh wow oh thank you wow hang on, I’m— ]

Terushima Yuuji: Clever, with a warm / compassionate heart. [thank you sensei, part 2 ]

Hyakuzawa Yuudai: Up until junior high, he was in baseball club. He has some high spacial awareness.

Nakashima Takeru: When he’s angry he’s the type to say, “I don’t even care anymore! Have it your way!” but then sneakily keep tabs on the situation.

Echigo Sakae: Mr. Philosophical. [!!!!! ]

Amanai Kanoka: She’s the type who may look delicate / fragile at first glance, but she eats well, sleeps well, and can reset.

Ikejiri Hayato: This guy really wasn’t putting enough effort into volleyball, but I didn’t want him to just be a doll in the manga.

Towada Yoshiki:Akki-kun[captain of Ohgiminami] told Towada everything that I myself wanted to tell him.

Character Comments

Sakusa Kiyoomi: When I think “strong player,” I’ve started to think Sakusa in the last chapter.

Komori Motoya: Up until junior high, he was an outside hitter who was just good at defense. But being around Sakusa, he thought “I can’t win against that” so he switched to libero to compete in defense.

Kiryuu Wakatsu: His low self-esteem is similar to Akaashi’s. A devoted spiker. [the word used here is the same word used to describe Akaashi as a setter]

Usuri Michiru: Set apart by his burning black heart. [the Japanese here rhymed, I couldn’t not make the translation rhyme, don’t @ me ]

Unnan Keisuke: I think he just wants to give off a mysterious aura.

Mami Nozomu: “How lucky I am, just to be alive!!!”

Given Name Origins

Note: This is kind of from the perspectives of the parents, since given names are like a wish for the child’s future. Will make more sense if you know what their names mean.

Sakusa Kiyoomi: He inherited one character from each of his parents’ names.

Komori Motoya: To always keep that initial zeal. [this word is tricky, it refers to the fresh-eyed enthusiasm of starting something new—the same word can also be used to express innocence or naivety]

Tiny Q&A

Q: What triggered Sakusa’s unusual sensitivity to hygiene?

Actually, I don’t think it’s that unusual. I think it just stands out because he firmly expresses his dislike, whether that be out loud or through his facial expression. [THANK YOU ]

Q: Did you think about Sakusa’s play style when his name was first mentioned as one of the top 3 aces? And also, if you would, please tell us the reason you didn’t reveal it until the V.League arc?

I didn’t think about it at all. It was put off simply because [Itachiyama] lost before I could introduce it in the high school arc.

Character Comments

Hoshiumi Korai: I was worried about being able to draw him in a cool way, but I think he came out looking pretty cool.

Hirugami Sachirou: That scene where he slammed his hand on the wall was inspired by one of my old [work colleague] senpais, who told this story of their senpai from a time when they were in school. [so many possessives in this sentence]

Hakuba Gao: A blessed person. Not only in his physique, but also in the people around him.

Bessho Kazuyoshi: With Kamomedai having such strong blocking, for him to be one of the starting middles as a first-year is pretty amazing.

Given Name Origins

Note: This is kind of from the perspectives of the parents, since given names are like a wish for the child’s future. Will make more sense if you know what their names mean.

Hoshiumi Kōrai: I want him to become a shining person.

Hirugami Sachirou: To be happy. [the first Kanji of his name 幸 is the root of the word “happiness” here]

Hakuba Gao: I want him to become an energetic person.

Bessho Kazuyoshi: He inherited one character from each of his parents’ names.

Suwa Aikichi: He inherited one character from his uncle.

Nozawa Izuru: To be able to walk his own path.

Kanbayashi Keiichirou: To be able to become a big person.

Tiny Q&A

Q: Which character did you most enjoy drawing?

Hirugami. Because he doesn’t hesitate.

Q: Was the uniform color meant to evoke seagulls?

YUP.

[this was probably just to fill extra space on the page ]

Q: Which character’s post-graduation path did you have the most trouble with?

I didn’t have any trouble.

Character Comments

Kozume Kenma: A character created during fairly early days. It was fun to draw him as a completely different being by the end.

Kuroo Tetsuro: This person was also created in the early days, yet after 30 volumes, I drew his childhood arc and suddenly felt “Oh, so that’s who this guy is.”

Yaku Morisuke: When he talks about his current concern[getting charged the children’s discount when going out], the responses are pretty off the mark, and in the end people just recommend doing some muscle training.

Kai Nobuyuki: I drew him as someone who seems to give off negative ions. [I adore this, negative ions have a calming effect and are found around moving water… like by the seaside… as in Kai’s family name, 海 “ocean”!]

Yamamoto Taketora: At first he was created as someone along the same lines / in the same category as Tanaka, but he gradually became much different.

Fukunaga Shouhei: I think he could also be a mangaka for a gag manga…

Haiba Lev: If he keeps chasing that feeling of “I want to stand out!” he has prospects of doing a Hollywood movie or something.

Inuoka Sou: From a middle blocker to an opposite who can defend. The guy who was always one step ahead of Hinata.

Shibayama Yuuki: A guy who thinks about other people’s feelings a little more than necessary.

Given Name Origins

Note: This is kind of from the perspectives of the parents, since given names are like a wish for the child’s future. Will make more sense if you know what their names mean.

Kozume Kenma: To be a person who endlessly improves himself. [the second Kanji of his name 磨 is used here in the verb “to improve / polish”]

Kuroo Tetsuro: To become a strong, yet cheerful person. [the second Kanji of his name 朗 is used here in “cheerful”]

Yaku Morisuke: To be able to protect what is important. [Instead of the more common ways of writing “to protect,” the first Kanji of his name 衛 is used. While it reads the same way, it seems to refer to more active forms of defense—as in scouts, sentinels, or an advance guard, rather than a general protector]

Kai Nobuyuki: He took one character from his father.

Yamamoto Taketora: To become a brave / gallant person. Given to him by his grandpa.

Fukunaga Shouhei: He inherited one character from his grandpa.

Haiba Lev: To become a strong person.

Inuoka Sou: To become a person who can put in every effort for the sake of others. [the Kanji of his name 走 appears in the word for “making an effort / working hard”]

Shibayama Yuuki: To live kindly. [both Kanji in his name appear in this sentence, 優 the root of “kindly” and 生 the root of “to live”]

Teshiro Tamahiko: He inherited one character from his grandpa.

Tiny Q&A

Q: Which character did you most enjoy drawing?

Kozume. Because he’s the person who’s least attached to volleyball (there aren’t many other people like that in this story).

Q: Did a girl manager ever join the club after Kuroo and gang (the third-years) graduated?

Yes, I think someone who watched the Spring Tournament eventually joined.

Q: Which character’s post-graduation path did you have the most trouble with?

Yamamoto. Whether or not he should continue with volleyball. Looking back on the match with Sarukawa, I thought, “Yeah, it looks like he can do it.”

Character Comments

Bokuto Kotaro: Probably the only one in the entire story who isn’t influenced by Hinata.

Akaashi Keiji: At first, I thought he would play the role of someone who keeps Bokuto in line, but he himself needs someone to keep him in line too. [the word “tsukkomi” is used here]

Konoha Akinori: He’s the type whose excellence you don’t immediately notice, but he’s well-liked by everyone.

[only commented on three characters from Fukurodani, sorry ]

Given Name Origins

Note: This is kind of from the perspectives of the parents, since given names are like a wish for the child’s future. Will make more sense if you know what their names mean.

Bokuto Kotaro: I want him to be a person who illuminates his surroundings.

Akaashi Keiji: He inherited one character from each of his parents’ names. [kind of explains why he has relatively unique kanji for a fairly common name]

Konoha Akinori: He inherited one character from each of his parents’ names.

Washio Tatsuki: He inherited one character from his grandpa.

Sarukui Yamato: To become a gentle / calm person.

Komi Haruki: To become a lively / active child.

Onaga Wataru: To be able to connect with many different people.

Tiny Q&A

Q: Which character did you most enjoy drawing?

Bokuto. Because his [degree of] volatility is huge.

Q: As the name “Fukurodani Academy Group” suggests, is it safe to say Fukurodani is the main leader of training camps and the like?

Absolutely. 1982 was the start of their joint training camps, at first only with Shinzen High. Nekoma and Ubugawa started participating after that.

Q: Which character’s post-graduation path did you have the most trouble with?

I didn’t have any trouble.

Character Comments

Miya Atsumu: When he first appeared, I wasn’t thinking of him as a twin. I basically just drew him to be a mysterious character. But keeping him that way was impossible.

Miya Osamu: When he started talking about food, I decided, “That’s going to be his thing.”

Kita Shinsuke: The character furthest away from the creator. Although he’s the exact opposite of me, he was unexpectedly easy to draw.

Suna Rintarou: He’s from Aichi Prefecture. He came to Inarizaki after being scouted. [this explains why he doesn’t speak Kansai]

Ojiro Aran: He’s probably the type who can’t abandon someone who’s in trouble. I hope he doesn’t get scammed or anything.

Riseki Heisuke: A man who has become mentally buff after tons of mental muscle pain.

Given Name Origins

Note: This is kind of from the perspectives of the parents, since given names are like a wish for the child’s future. Will make more sense if you know what their names mean.

Miya Atsumu: To become a person who helps others.

Miya Osamu: To become a person who helps others.

Kita Shinsuke: He inherited one character from his grandpa.

Suna Rintarou: To be able to walk a just and honest path.

Ojiro Aran: To be a cheerful / jovial person.

Riseki Heisuke: To be able to live calmly.

Ginjima Hitoshi: To be blessed with good relationships / connections to good people.

Omimi Ren: To discipline and refine [himself].

Akagi Michinari: To be able to open up his life / choose between many roads.

Tiny Q&A

Q: Which character did you most enjoy drawing?

Atsumu. Because he’s animal-like.

Q: Was there someone with whom you entrusted editorial supervision while writing Kansai-ben?

Inarizaki is supposed to be in Amagasaki, so characters’ conversations were written by recreating a dialogue between two downtowners inside my head. Occasionally, Miyagawa Daisuke-san [comedian] or Tokui Yoshimi-san [actor] would come in[to my imagination?] so I think the phrasing became properly Kyoto-esque. I believe I had supervision from someone in my editorial department who was from Kansai, but the writing was never changed so I’ve gained some confidence.

[I’m so fascinated by this, it was a pretty extensive answer so I hope I’ve translated correctly. In other words, the Kansai-ben was written mostly intuitively, with occasional reference. すごい]

Q: Which character’s post-graduation path did you have the most trouble with?

Suna. For him to keep playing volleyball or to stop completely —I think either one is possible.
