Bet you didn’t see that coming

Ok so going back through watching Captain American: The Winter Soldier I noticed something. When Steve and Bucky are fighting on the helicarier and Steve says “you know me” to which Bucky yells “No I don’t”. He says that because he’s scared. The first time he admitted he knew him he was punished. His brain was put back in a blender. He thinks that if he admits to steve that he knows him that he will be punished again. It has been programmed into his head that if he remembers he will be punished. That why we don’t really see him remembering and admitting he does until he’s out of HYDRAS grasp. Because he’s scared of being hurt, and if that’s not heartbreaking I don’t know what is.

As a joke, Clint once hired a babysitter to watch Tony while the adults were out for a few hours. When they got back, the babysitter, a 14-year-old girl who was trying to save up money for a new phone, managed to get Tony to clean out the fridge, dust the shelves, and organize the workshop a little. She asked for $20 at the end of the night. Clint gave her $100.

I figure after Bucky spends a long time being so conflicted and ashamed about his time as the Winter Soldier the he can’t even talk about it, eventually he realizes that everyone seems to actually like him and it freaks him out. And for months, no one can get him to stop reminding them about why they all should hate him. Steve’s like, “Here are your pancakes, buddy.” “One time I killed a guy in front of his daughter.” “Yeah, you told me. I love you anyway. Eat your pancakes.” On a run with Sam, he passes him and Sam calls after him like, “You’re only running three laps to my one? Man, you’re slacking.” Bucky slows down long enough to say, “I tortured people too, you know.” “I hope you don’t think that’s gonna make me go easy on you,” Sam says as he speeds up and passes Bucky for the first time. Later, Natasha stops by with the Friends box set and gives it to Bucky. “You and Steve should watch this one night. Invite me over when you start it, okay?” And Bucky just clutch he’s the DVDs and stares at her with narrow eyes and flared nostrils until she’s like, “What?” “I SHOT YOU!” Nat shrugs, “Just once. Do it again and I’ll stop bringing you new TV shows.”

Okay but you cannot convince me for one second that Clint doesn’t talk to Bucky about his own experiences being brainwashed. 

“They’re going to tell you it’s not your fault,” he says one day, maybe in the training room, maybe over a cup of coffee. Bucky looks up, half-listening because he still doesn’t sleep very well and he and Barton haven’t exactly had reason to chat. “What you did when you were brainwashed. And it’s not, it’s not your fault, but somehow, people saying that doesn’t mean a goddamn thing. They weren’t there, they don’t know what it means to get ripped out of your head and see your body used to kill.”

Now he has Bucky’s attention, but Bucky just lifts his coffee cup to his lips and doesn’t make eye contact. “And you do?”

“You were under when Thor’s psycho little brother tried the whole ‘take over the world’ bit, but he used me to do it.” Clint’s voice shakes a little, even after all this time. “I know it wasn’t my fault, and so do you, but that doesn’t make it any easier to wash the blood off.” He swallows a sip of his coffee uncomfortably and stands. He’s said his piece. 

“What does?” Bucky says before Clint can go two steps. “What helps?”

“You’ve got to find some kind of redemption,” Clint replies. “And someone to talk to.”

As the archer walks away, Bucky thinks that he may already have the latter. 

Brainwash-Buddies

“You are deluded, Captain. You pretend to be a simple soldier, but in reality you are just afraid to admit that we have left humanity behind. Unlike you, I embrace it proudly. Without fear!”

This was one of my biggest undertakings in a while, Johann Schmidt, or Red Skull from Captain America.

This was a project I had been working on from late spring to early summer, constantly debating exactly how I’d like to go about this, choosing between doing a mask or doing makeup, and ultimately I decided it would be best if I put my skills to the test and made a full head latex mask from scratch.

The mask was first sculpted in water based clay, molded with Ultracal 30, then cast in mask latex from Kosart Effects, and finally painted.

I’m not entirely satisfied with the end result, but I am certainly proud of it and very happy with this being my first ever full mask.
