Hospitals rooms were almost like a second home for you. Fighting crime and being a general badass led to regular injuries and as long as you could come out of the hospital at some point it seemed like a win. Whenever you went on missions, you were almost certain to get hurt, so you just hoped for minor injuries but this time it wasn’t as you had wanted. You had been distracted in the midst of a fight that you hadn’t noticed a different person with a gun. The bullet had ripped through your abdomen, leaving you in a pool of your own blood. You had luckily not been alone, and Bucky had been able to take them both out before getting you medical assistance, but past him calling for help, you had lost consciousness.

When you had awoken, the bright lights of the hospital room burned your eyes terribly. Next to you sat Bucky, whilst a woman in a nurse’s uniform stood sorting out the machine that you were hooked up to. You tried to sit up, but both of the people rushed to your side to gently push you back into the bed.

“You need your rest,” the nurse said softly. “You have been given some pretty strong pain medication, so you might feel drowsy or confused. I’ll just go get your doctor to explain everything for you now that you’re awake.”

She shuffled out of the room, leaving you alone with Bucky. He seemed relieved to see you awake, having seen the extent of the damage that the shot had done to you.

“How are you feeling?” He asked.

The nurse had been right, your mind seemed like it was in a fog, and you didn’t seem to have any energy to fight off the thoughts that came into your head from escaping out of your mouth.

“I’m glad you’re here,” you smiled, struggling to keep your eyes fully open. “I wouldn’t want anyone else here.”

Bucky didn’t really know what you meant seen as you hadn’t answered his question at all.

“Of course, I wasn’t going to leave you here on your own.”

You lazily held onto his hand, your grip weak and half of your fingers fallen from his palm.

“I love you more than anything in this world,” you whispered.

It had been something you had felt for as long as you had known him but seen as you were unable to control your thoughts, you let yourself say more than you had ever thought you could until you regretted it all when the medication had worn off. Little had you known, he had felt the same, but he couldn’t help but feel disappointed to learn of your feelings now that you weren’t fully there in your mind.

With a pained heart, he gave your hand a tight squeeze. “When you feel better, we can talk about it.”

You nodded your head before your eyelids finally became too heavy for you to fight to keep open.

As they saying goes ‘tis better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all. You couldn’t have agreed any less with that status. When you first met James Buchanan Barnes, you fell head over heels and your courtship was completely perfect in your eyes. He had a kind and loving heart, and made you feel good about yourself in ways you hadn’t without him. You couldn’t have imagined life without him, not even when he was to head off to war, you felt unstoppable, and would have sworn that he would come home to you, and you only felt that confirmed when he proposed to you before he got on the train to leave for the army.

By no means were you naïve. You knew the dangers of war, even with the main fight far away from you, you were not blind to the damage it was causing but the fog of young love forbade you from thinking that even war could get in the way of the two of you. How blind you had been. He didn’t return to you and the reality of that never truly set in, such an intense pain could not be felt without destroying you. Steve apologised for losing him, for not having done more but you didn’t blame him, you were just grateful that he was safe.

Your life crumbled from that day. Who you had been as the future Mrs Barnes was lost with your fiancé, and you were just left as a shell of the person you once were. You needed a distraction and Steve introduced you to his friend Peggy who was able to find you a job and once he disappeared, you only went deeper into it.

Once the war ended, the rumours of something continuing to rumble under the surface and as people had once believed the research into super soldiers weren’t put on hold. You had nothing else to live for and put yourself forward for being a guinea pig, not caring about what happened to you. You didn’t die though, you suffered the experiments, but you came out as a new you, still damaged by the pain in your heart, still grieving and anger-filled but now with unknown levels of powers. The scientists had put you through strenuous tests after to see what had happened to you, and as your powers became clearer, you did what your fiancé had always done best, fought for the little guy.

You’d never be Captain America, but you were a hero to New York, able to use your powers for good, keeping your head down in fighting crime, never getting close to another person again. One power they hadn’t anticipated was longevity. It wasn’t clear at first, not until everyone around you had aged a decade, and you looked like not a day had passed. With every year it only became clearer that you were still physically in your mid-twenties whilst everyone else continued to age. Over seven decades later, you could only be grateful for having not made connections as those you had grown up with were mainly passed, whilst you looked like you were still in your prime.

It felt like you would be hero for eternity, keeping to yourself but helping all that you could. One night you returned to your small apartment and flicked on the tv to see that Steve Rogers had exited the ice and all the past came back. You didn’t contact him. You couldn’t but after he was making headlines for a few years, you no longer had a choice as he had heard of the woman with powers in his hometown and investigated. He could have never imagined that it would be you. You reconnected reluctantly but dismissed him whenever he mentioned Bucky, not believing him when he told you he was still alive and not willing to let yourself get hurt again.

Steve knew how much you cared about Bucky and wasn’t going to let you continue to dwell in the pain that had consumed you for nearly a century. He invited you to the Avengers Compound, just for a chat, and you agreed, not realising it was a set up. You sat with him sipping at your coffee when the door behind Steve opened, revealing the man you had mourned for longer than you had been by his side.

“Bucky,” you croaked, the mug from your hand dropping, shattering onto the ground below you.

“Y/N,” he said, a pained smile curling onto his lips.

Every emotion that you had tried to bury deep down within you all that time ago reappeared and you lost all control that you had tried to cling onto. You pushed your chair away from the table, storming over towards the man you had never believed that you would see again.

“I thought you were dead,” you shouted. “I thought that I would never see you again. I put everything on hold for you.”

Bucky and Steve exchanged a look, having not had any idea that you would react like this, not knowing why you would shout at him.

“I have never stopped loving you,” you said, still shouting but tears beginning to fall down your cheek. “I could never stop loving you.”

As the sorrow you had tried to hide for so long surged from within you, Bucky reached out a hand to gently touch your shoulder, forcing you to make eye contact with him, both of you in tears.

“I’ve always loved you, doll,” he smiled tearfully.

You let yourself break, falling into his arms, in a tight, long missed embrace. The two of you stood entwined together for longer than normal, neither of you wanting to let go of the one thing that had been missing from you. The hug stretched on as Bucky guided his hands down your arms to hold onto your own hands, but paused when he felt something on your finger. He looked down at the small stone sitting on a simple band that had not been removed since he had placed it there all those years ago.

“You still have your ring,” he whispered, surprised that you had kept it for so long.

You shrugged your shoulders. “Getting cold feet after all this time, Barnes?”

A small laugh escaped him.

“I still stick by making you my wife even after the longest engagement.”

When your flatmate is a jerk.

James Barnes (Bucky) is your new flatmate and so far living together has not gone very well.

2K.

Warnings:Not a smut, kinda soft but with a little bit of spicy. (Eng not my first language.)

You hadn’t even been living together for two months and you already couldn’t stand that asshole named James Buchanan Barnes. The cost of living in New York was exorbitant and when your flatmate left you alone without a previous notice you had no choice but to accept the first stranger who answered your ad, well the first one who didn’t look like a serial killer or a pervert. How wrong you were… Sleeping at night had become impossible, when James didn’t bring a girl, he spent the nights tossing and turning in his room. That man didn’t know what rest meant. If things went on like that, your bosses were going to throw you out of work, nobody wanted a zombie for an employee.

You needed a way to bring the matter up and make it clear to your flatmate that he had to learn to be less noisy. But how could you look him in the face and tell him that his hoarse moans were keeping you awake at night?

Well ,that morning was going to be the definitive one, during breakfast you would tell him. The night before the blue-eyed man hadn’t brought any friend with him, so you wouldn’t have to face a naked stranger, just a freshly risen James, with tousled hair, no shirt, and grey sweatpants that left little to the imagination. Shit, if you hated him so much for depriving you of a good night’s rest, why did you bite your lip until it almost bled when you were in the same room?

“Good morning,” his deep morning voice caught you off guard, making you almost choke with your coffee when he showed up in the kitchen.

“Morning” was the only thing you could mumble, all the determination you had gathered a few minutes before, disappeared in the presence of that man. “I was about to make pancakes, do you want some?” you managed to pull yourself together, your main idea was to soften him up with some treat and then drop the bomb.

“Sure” he accepted, a little suspicious. The fake smile on your face did not go unnoticed. Normally the only thing he got out of you in the mornings was a grunt or two.

You turned your back to him to focus on making breakfast, you just hoped you didn’t burn anything, you knew your kindness hadn’t gone unnoticed and James was analysing you from head to toe, making your stomach tingle from that intense stare.

You devoured the pancakes in complete silence. In the short time you had lived together you hadn’t found anything in common, so apart from things to do with the rent or the bills, you had nothing to talk about. But Barnes didn’t seem to mind, he was too captivated by the way you were sucking on the honey-coated fork, although it didn’t escape his notice that you wanted to tell him something, even he could hear the gears in your head turning.

“Just say it.” he grunted as your tongue went from playing with the fork to your lips, that game was starting to cause him problems in his sweatpants, and it wasn’t easy trying to hide his half-erection.

“Eh?” your innocent expression made him even more upset.

“If you have something to say to me, say it now, I don’t have all morning,” he sounded more abrupt than he meant it to, but that only made all your pent-up rage of those days come out of your mouth, unfiltered.

“All right, that’s what you want… how about you keep your fucking voice down when you bring someone to the flat or better yet, why don’t you join one of those sex addiction groups? Because you’ve got a fucking problem and I’m not going to put up with any more sleepless nights,” you blurted out without thinking, your eyes fixed on the blue ones that seemed to open wider and wider with every word that came out of your mouth.

Barnes’ astonished face turned into a grin of amusement as he recovered from your speech, “Ohh, honey, I think you’re overreacting. You’re not jealous that I’m the only one having fun at night, are you?” he took you by your chin, caressing your jawline.

“How dare you?” you slapped him away and you were really close to punch him in his pretty face but you restrained yourself. Revenge sounded better. If he wanted to go the hard way that’s how it would be, you were going to give him a taste of his own medicine.

***

You had been chatting with a guy for a few weeks, he was cute but just not interesting enough to want to get to know him more. He had insisted a couple of times to meet and you finally found the reasons to do so. That idiot James was going to have to eat his words. Who did he think he was? The worst thing is that you hadn’t been able to stop thinking about Barnes all day. You only wanted to get revenge, right? It had nothing to do with the fact that that caress had left you longing for something you couldn’t yet put into words, but your imagination had, and it had given you a very clear picture of what it would be like to have James on top of you. Fuck! You just wanted to forget about it, and focus on your revenge. The date was set up, you and that guy were to meet at a bar near your house, just a little warm up before taking him with you and show Bucky how things worked.

A few hours later you were playing with your Martini. That man was really boring; he only knew to talk about him and his exes. He was so absorbed in himself that he didn’t care if you were listening or not and you only could think about running away, but you had already gone too far… With a coy smile you touched his arm and batting your lashes you tried to get his attention. "I know a better place to talk.” you said almost without recognizing your own voice. “My flat is very close… What do you say?” you made yourself sick. Why is it that deep down all felt so wrong?

By the time you got to your flat you were shaking in your boots, you were regretting your wonderful idea, but your stubbornness prevented you from letting James get away with it. As soon as you turned the key the last thing you expected to find was your enemy waiting for you to return, or that was the impression you got when your gazes met, Barnes had got up from the sofa and seemed to want to say something to you, but it was enough for the dark-haired man to see your companion for that feeling to disappear. “Who is this guy?” James asked with his worst manners.

“Oh, Hi, I didn’t know you’d be home” you lied through your teeth. “We don’t want to disturb you, my friend and I will be in my room.” you tried to sound as innocent as possible. It’s fair to say that you had completely forgotten the guy’s name.

“Y/n can I talk to you for a moment?” James approached you, blocking your way to your room, but you didn’t have time to dodge him because all you could think about was how good he smelled. Someone had taken a shower and his cologne was knocking out all your common sense. It was lavender and mint, right? At that point the other guy seemed to have ceased to exist.

“We can talk later.” you managed to articulate as you came to your senses.

“Don’t do this…” he stopped you by grabbing your wrist but not forcibly, just to stop you from running off with that loser. His voice sounded almost the same as always, but if you hadn’t been so nervous you would have noticed that his eyes were tinged with desperation.

“Okay, okay, what’s going on here?” That big mouth remembered how to talk. The weird vibes you two were giving was too much to handle for his small brain. James stepped away from you and you froze, not knowing what to say. “Is this some weird thing like couples who like to see each other with someone else?” he added, leaving you dumbfounded. Before you could react, your flatmate did.

“Get out of my fucking house!” he imposed, bringing out for the first time the soldier he once was. One of the few things you knew about him was that he was a veteran, but that was something he never used to talk about. His dog tags hanging around his neck gave you an idea.

Then, it all happened so fast that it seemed unreal. Barnes was shoving your date out and he was being more dick than ever. After slamming the door shut, James cornered you against it. “What the fuck was that all about?” he questioned, blocking your escape with his muscular arms. He was pissed off, you could tell by the swollen vein on his forehead and how his breath had become heavier.

“I just wanted to have some fun…” you managed to articulate with your eyes locked on the ground as you were unable to look him in the face, too embarrassed by everything that had just happened. “Besides, I don’t owe you any explanation.” you dared to add.

“So you want to have fun, right?” he seemed to snap, “I can fix that.” his voice lowered a few tones and your whole body shivered when he made you look at him. “You only have to ask nicely…” his gaze looked wolfish and hungry. If he needed a reaction from you to keep going, the way you were biting your lips was enough, but at that point he wanted to make you beg.

“Why should I?” you arched your brows with all the strength you had left. He was driving you crazy, but in a completely different way than before, however you didn’t want to give up so easily. Barnes stroked your arm, barely touching you, but immediately causing goose bumps all over your skin.

“Because that’s all you can think about since this morning.” he saw right through you, but it didn’t save him from being a jerk. That was enough… You were tired of him playing with you.

“Fuck you!” you pushed him with all your might, but before you could get away, he lifted you over his shoulder and carried you to his room. On the way you kicked as much as you could, but it was like hitting a wall. He left you on the edge of his bed, and crouched down in front of you with his hands up, wanting you to know that he was coming in peace. “I know I owe you an apology.“ he looked genuinely sorry, “This morning I behaved like a dick.”.

“Only this morning?” you mumbled, avoiding his gaze because you knew you would be unable to resist his puppy eyes. James sat down next to you and let out a low snort.

"I know I haven’t been the best flatmate.” Then he plopped down on the bed and his gaze was lost somewhere on the ceiling. “I have no excuse, but this is the first time I’ve lived with anyone after leaving the army.” he confessed and it felt like that was the first time you had a real conversation. “I guess I’ve lost my manners.”

You dropped down next to him, mirroring him. “Your manners aren’t the problem, you just need to stop moaning so loudly,” you chuckled to yourself and rolled onto your side to make yourself more comfortable, finding yourself face to face with James. You felt your cheeks flush, you had never seen Barnes like that before, without that armour that seemed to accompany him everywhere he went. “I’ll try my best.” he laughed with you.

You let silence fall between both of you and just stared at each other. Without really knowing how, the distance between you was getting shorter, your eyes kept going back and forth from James’ eyes to his lips, he seemed to notice and with a soft grin in his face he tucked a strand of your hair behind your ear.

Steve has always been the one to lose Bucky:

- in the first captain america when bucky fell off the train and ‘died’

- in the winter soldier when he disappeared at the end and steve spent years trying to find him

- in civil war when he was frozen at the end in wakanda

- in infinity war when bucky turned to dust

That’s why it’s going to be 100000x more painful if Bucky experiences losing Steve for the first time in avengers 4

Especially knowing that Steve probably won’t be coming back like Bucky always has

Bucky would end up losing Steve forever…

It hurts me to think about the fact that Bucky and Steve may never reunite again like

What if Steve dies before he gets the chance to see Bucky again in avengers 4

What if Steve has to sacrifice his life in order to save Bucky?

two men that had their small moment of happinessripped away from them in the span of like 5 minuets.

Marvel did them so dirty andthey really did deserve better so much better.

Dark!Viking James Barnes, Reader, Steven Rogers

Words: 1020

Warnings: None. This one isn’t dark, just setting up new alliances.

A/N: Sorry it’s been a while since I updated this. Life has been super crazy and I’m using the computer I use for school, which is not my first choice for my writings. I’ll try to update this more often. Thanks for sticking with me! Enjoy!

Several days had passed since your conversation with James and his desire to start anew. You didn’t buy his repentant man act, whose only goal is to make you see the good in him and begin to put your trust in, but so far, he’s keeping his promises, as few as they had been. No matter, you plan to keep him at arm’s length and would not turn your back on the heathen. You will always keep yourself one step ahead of the Viking, come hell or high water.

The only thing you were having a hard time wrapping your head around was the use of James’ most trusted friend, Steven. You knew the relationship between the two, hell, he was there when the Vikings stormed into your lands and watched as the hedonistic brute slayed your father. The blues of his eyes focused on you when James took you to his ship and locked you into his quarters. He stared at you anytime he came into the Captain’s room, his eyes seeing you lying naked and afraid on the bed after being used as James’ plaything, his gaze never wandering. Steven has seen you at your worst but has done nothing that would make you think his own intentions aren’t as cruel, and he isn’t planning your downfall right along with his best friend.

Which is why you had a mind to keep him at a distance and today would be no different. Today, Steven was to escort you around the village and let the people see you, their Queen, potentially interacting with those whose interest was piqued. James had arranged for his friend to accompany you, saying his presence around you would look favorably with the villagers.

You were skeptical of this. If James was the one his people looked to as their protector, the man that essentially ruled them, why would Steven by your side make a difference? Wouldn’t it make more sense for the Viking ruler to show you around so the people could see the two of you interacting, casting away any doubts and suspicion? That was reason enough to doubt the validity of this new start and you fully intended to proceed with all caution.

“Morning, Princess,” Steven greets you at the door of your abode with a bow.

You curtsy as you would in any formal setting but remain silent. You had no desire to exchange verbal pleasantries and this was not a setting that called for a proper response.

Steven sighs, he must sense the tension but doesn’t speak of it. He offers his arm to you, and you take it with a shrug, the two of you starting your trek around the village.

“Nice day for a stroll.” The man at your side tries to start conversation after moments of tense silence.

“We are not friends, so there is no need to talk.” You smile at a woman carrying a basket of vegetables as she passes you by.

“And what if I’d like to become friends?”

You stop and stare hard into the Vikings blue eyes looking for the lie. “I’m not interested in playing your games and I won’t be made a fool of,” you warn and stomp away, continuing the trek around the village.

Steven catches up to you, joining back at your side. “I’m not here to play games, your highness. I wish to offer you my friendship and loyalty.”

“Loyalty?!” You wave at two young children that are pointing at you, smiling happily in your direction. “Your loyalty and devotion lie with your tyrant friend. I do not wish to be on the receiving end of your Viking loyalty.”

“You’re right,” he agrees as a young blonde crosses your path and hands over a loaf of warm bread. You nod and offer thanks, the girl smiling back and running off, back from where she came. “I’m sure my past actions can be seen as vicious and cruel, but I come to you now to seek forgiveness and offer my friendship and devotion. I cannot stand by and see any further harm is bestowed upon you.”

Stopping in the middle of the road you look upon the Viking. He appears sincere in his words. Truth be told, he resembles a kicked or wounded animal and you wonder if this is another game or if he’s really telling you the truth.”

“And why should I trust you?”

Steven shrugs, and it’s probably the realest thing you can recall him doing. “You can’t,” he admits. “From day one there’s nothing that I’ve done that is cause for you to believe me, but I’d like to earn your faith and in time, win your trust. All I’m asking for is a chance, something I know I do not deserve.”

There’s a vulnerability in his words and presence, you can sense it. This is not the same Viking that stood by and watched as James slaughtered your father, nor the same man that was present when your captor repeatedly had his way with you on the ship. The person in front of you was displaying a softer side, one that you had never encountered before in any of the warriors. Maybe this was something that could be used to your advantage later.

“I do not trust easily anymore. Your friend has driven that from me, and I don’t think I’ll ever find myself a trusting fool as I had been raised to be.” Steven nods but remains silent. “I do realize I need an ally but I’m hesitant to use that term. I’m not sure how loyal you wish to be or if you’re playing the long game and looking for a better opportunity with James. Whichever the case may be, I implore you to choose wisely. I may have started as naive but I’m far from it. You’re either with me or against me.”

Steven takes a moment to think but then smiles. “The enemy of my enemy is my friend.” He holds out his hand in an offer of kinship.

You grin and take the offered hand. “So, it seems.”
