What snow never touches (Part 1/?)

Haldir x Reader

Summary:You patrolled through the night to see the sunrise. Only the weather is icy.

Word count: 466

Warnings:none

A/N:Since Christmas is coming up and the first snow has fallen (and melted) where I live, I thought I’d write something wintery with our favourite Marchwarden. I plan this to be a multi-chapter thing, then we’ll see where the road leads us.

Drops of rainbow

Even though winter never really plagued Lothlórien, its whiteness still crept up to the land’s borders. The mountains by the north were covered with a thicker layer of silvery snow, and cold winds brought the news of crisp weather.

The ice-covered grass glimmered with the colours of the rainbow as the rising sun shed its first rays upon it. Every step you took was like walking on glass, and unconsciously you slowed your pace, shifting your weight from one foot to the other with care.

Elves weren’t that affected by their surroundings, yet this biting breeze tinted your cheeks and nose red. You pulled the gray cloak closer together on you as you basked in the purplish warmth of the dawn.

You took a deep inhale, breathing in the essence of this coldness that was so unfamiliar to you. In nature, the very least. It smelled clean and liminal, with the aroma of pines growing at the foot of the mountains nearby, wet rock and dry grass, and a hint of the scent of a certain ellon who was often as cold as winter in the rest of Middle Earth.

The thought made you smirk until you heard the cracking footsteps behind you. The smugness quickly left your face when you realised who’s they were.

‘Y/n, your patrol is done,’ the Marchwarden in command announced, now from by your side. 'The night had you freezing. You should get warm and take some rest.’

If you hadn’t known Haldir, you would have thought it was concern coming from his voice. He scanned you from head to toe, stopping at the redness of your face and then at your cloak held tightly together. He took one of your hands into his, not to warm it, but as a confirmation to himself. The warmth of his palm was scorching against your skin, and a similar burn spread your cheeks; only from the inside. He made a disapproving face before letting your hand fall. He was right.

Haldir turned his attention to the sunrise, much like you did before. He expected you to leave, and without a word spoken.

You weren’t going to let it end like that.

'It is wondrous we don’t get such extreme temperatures in Caras Galadhon, but there is such beauty in how these ice drops catch the light…’

'You don’t have to stay for formal chitchat; we all know the weather turns to winter,’ he stated sternly then turned his head towards you to send you away. 'You patrolled all night, and you’re cold. Go back to camp.’

You pushed his nose and it caught him off guard.

'You were out all night, too,’ you pointed out his cold-flushed skin, before heading off to the talans.

Damn, you earned a bad point in his books.

Andúnë

Haldir x Reader

A/N: So I’m not great at writing by any means, but I wrote this to my younger (and current) self, who could not feel pretty with dark hair. Maybe somebody else finds the idea entertaining.

Her silhouette was encased in golden with the descending rays of the Sun. A soft breeze played with her long, velvet gown, its colour waving with the wind, taking on different shades. Long, dark locks danced around freely to frame her delicate features as if a veil to crown her head. Her face gave home to a graceful smile, that reached up to her eyes, glimmering even with the setting sun behind her. The blooming elanors softened her steps as she paced herself, taking a long look at the arriving group.

Haldir stood mesmerised, not even daring to blink fearing that the apparition would vanish to mist or fade away. Many of his men halted the same, until one of them breathed: ‘Lúthien.’

'Tinúviel…’ another muttered, then called out with bewilderment. 'Tinúviel!’

The Marchwarden heard none of it, though his thoughts were similar. Air seemed to be scarce, even unnecessary; his whole being relaxed and tensed at the same time. Her beauty was like of Lúthien’s: breathtaking, etheral… Only he knew who it was, but could not dare to believe it.

Not even as she ran up to him with bouncy steps, her smile growing wider.

You stopped before the broad-shouldered Marchwarden. You placed a hand on his cheek, despite having to rise up onto your toes to reach him.

'You are well,’ you sighed in relief, although it was obvoius - yet, you had to release the worries that had been eating you away for the last month.

Haldir said nothing, but picked you up to twirl you around with a long kiss.

'I’ve been thinking about you every night and each day,’ he finally breathed, still not letting you down. 'My memory serves no justice for your beauty.’

You blushed at his compliment, then bowed your head to press your forehead against his. You both allowed you eyes to shut close, breathing in each other’s presence, not caring for the rest of the guards’ presence. He was back, and you, still alive.

Every elf turned red for mistaking a mortal for Tinúviel. And with your luck, once home, Haldir would never let you live it down.

A/N: I had so much fun writing this one! It was a good break from the new chapter of Impossibly Redeemable that I’ve been sitting on. Hope everyone enjoys!

“Rúmil, this is not a good idea,” Orophin chided softly next to his younger brother’s ear.

“I do not know what you speak of,” Rúmil grinned, chancing a glance at Haldir across the training field. With a gulp, his smirk faltered for a split second as he continued, “I am merely showing our friend a bit of archery.”

At Dawn

“The dawn is almost upon us, my husband,” you whispered, enjoying the last moments in Haldir’s tight embrace; neither of you wanted to let go of the other, as if the night filled with slow and tender lovemaking left you in even greater yearning than before.

“When I return, my love, we will climb the Great Mallorn Tree once again and watch how the rosy fingers of daybreak paint the treetops with its lustre, while we bask in the sunshine of the new day,” when his whispered words reached your ears, you locked them in the golden cage of your heart for safekeeping.

“When you are gone, my love, I will gaze upon every sunrise on my own, counting the days until we meet again,” you responded, drowning in his gaze, feeling how strong the magical bond of your love was.

“As will I, and wherever I am, I will know that your eyes are set on the same beauty as mine. Do not shed tears, heart of my heart, it will be but a blink of an eye before we meet again,” Haldir murmured, placing the last tender kiss on your lips.

You watched him longingly as he left Lóthlorien, leading the army of five hundred elves to Helm’s Deep.
