FYDB Hot Shot: Roy Lim

Roy Lim, a huge fan favourite of FYDB was skinny, that is until he bulked up since February 2012. FYDB interviews the team Naga dragonboateralum on his bulking regime and fitness.

FYDB: Describe yourself before the regiment.

RL: To be honest, I’ve been on both sides of the spectrum, to be honest. Been pretty fat when I was 12 - 13 and skinny when I was 15 - 18. So yeah. Interesting childhood.

FYDB: Describe your diet for the past year.

RL: I switch it up. It almost felt like trial and error. But the one that worked is the high protein diet. Chicken breasts, eggs, meat… Don’t forget veggies and fish! And protein shakes are my best friends. By the way, I dig out my yolk when I consume my eggs. Five to six meals are spread out in a day.

Many cut down on rice but I make sure I eat a certain portion of it. I still need to bulk. If you are skinny, rice is always the way to go. It isn’t bad, though many try to avoid. Brown rice would be the better option. My family buys brown rice, which helps. It is a good replacement. Another alternative would be seaweed rice.

But I love my meat.

Sometimes after my workout, I go for half a chicken or a full one. *sniggers*

FYDB: Right, so more protein and unprocessed carbs. Got it. Did you take supplements like protein or pills?

RL: ’m living proof of bulking without pills. It may seem like a long process but just stay by the traditional way and results will eventually show.

I don’t believe in taking pills. Pills harm you in the long run. Protein shakes and Creatine, which is a boost of energy for workout, should be good enough.

FYDB: What’s your favourite protein shake?

RL: Optimum Nutrition, Strawberry flavour - and you can never go wrong with that! By the way, never get shakes from GNC (daylight robbery) Get yours from Nutrition Park or Optimum Nutrition!

FYDB: how do you feel about before and after you started the workout? And how do you feel now after seeing the results?

RL: Before, I feel hopeful. I did take photos so I could keep track. I dont think im there yet, however, I’m never complacent. I’m sure many gym-goers can relate to it. I just want to keep going at it but also keeping in mind that staying humble and appreciative is the key. I didn’t expect myself to get this far but am thankful because without my friends, my support system, who have guided me along the way, I wouldn’t be where I am now.

FYDB: What are you looking forward to with another six months of training?

RL: Really hoping to bulk more and then concentrate on definition. In terms of my physique, enough is never enough. There’s still a lot of work to do for myself. So yeah. It definitely helped with my confidence.

So does the gymrat addiction ever end for Roy? Apparently not. Roy’s looking more toned after the new year, a nod to those who have yet to even begin their new year’s resolution.

His transformation, which took less than a year is definitely astonishing. We’ve added a picture of him from April 2013 up there too.

And well, the lesson learnt from Roy here is that having a support system helps in reaching his goal - while most people work alone, it is indeed a myth that the road to fitness is a lonely one. Confidence is also what you would gain after such improvements in not just what you see in the mirror but also the strength you gain.

There’s no stopping Roy Lim - the first of many FYDB will interview for our new segment

Time for the third instalment of the Truth on Micron Legend! Here we take a look at the B Team. A majority of these episodes are still very good, some almost good enough to make the cut for an A Team level episode. The most prolific directors in this field is Masayuki Motsumoto, having directed Confrontation,Swoop,Vacation, Tactician, Detection, Past Part 1, Threaten, Puppet and Alliance. A rather mixed bag here. All these episodes feature some great animation as well as some that is less than stellar and the ratio is often very different. Past, Part 1 would probably be the most consistent outing.

It’s a very strong episode, but nothing that is truly amazing.

image
image

Many other episodes feature small amounts of really strong animation but overall are very average. I’ve mentioned before that it’s likely that Hidehito Ueda contributed many small sequences throughout the series, but here I don’t think that’s the case for the most part.

image
image

Masayuki’s quality animation is very stylised. It’s not like anything we’ve looked at before. Very harsh lines and shadows.

image

Alliance is probably the poorest episode, featuring many colouring errors (some which were not even present in the unfinished version!), scale problems, and overall poor animation. However, it does feature Unicron’s transformation, which is fantastic sequence, so I guess that’s where the budget on that episode was funnelled.

Next up is Shigeki Hatayama, who directed such episodes as Comrade, Underground, Credulous, Reinforcement, Awakening and Sacrifice. Shigeki episodes are typified by being very strong overall, but often featuring small amounts of very poor, off model animation.

image
image
image
image

Underground being the exception, which is overall a pretty poor outing.

image
image

Ken'ichi Ishikura directed the episodes Rescue, Uprising and Union. These three episodes have a huge disparity in quality. Rescue is pretty average with some very strong moments here and there. Union is almost good enough to be a A quality episode, though I do think significant amounts of this episode were directed by the mysterious director who worked on the revised animation in the series. Uprising, on the other hand is one of the poorest episodes in the whole series.

image
image

Lots of off model drawings, a huge lack of shading and detail.

image
image

It’s an unfortunate beginning to the last arc of the series, which after this, would be a very strong batch of episodes.

Next we have a group of directors who each appeared only once in the series. Ryo Motohira who directed Carnival, Shigeki Awai who directed Ruin and Mihiro Yamaguchi who directed Mars. All of these episodes are pretty strong and consistent. Carnival features a lot of nice, dynamic animation.

image
Ruin has a beautiful underwater colour palate.
image
image
Mars is pretty consistent but does feature some weird moments here and there.

image

Finally there’s time to mention Satoru Kusuda, who only seemed to work as a co-director on episodes such as Underground,Credulous, Conspiracy and Tactician. Because of this, it’s really hard to determine what effect Satoru had on the animation in these episodes.

So that’s the B Team. Average, gets the job done but nothing really amazing. Next time it’s the C Team, who barely make the cut for watchable episodes.
