Where did the stereotype of classical music being boring and/or relaxing come from??

Like… have those people ever heard anything by Paganini? Bartok’s Piano Sonata?? The fucking Rite of Spring???

Is all classical music just Clair de Lune to these people?

As First Lady, Jacqueline Kennedy invited artists, writers, scientists, poets, and musicians to mingle with politicians, diplomats, and statesmen at the White House. On January 18, 1962, JFK and Jacqueline Kennedy hosted a dinner in honor of composer Igor Stravinsky.

The Russian-born composer was in Washington, DC to conduct the performances of his “Oedipus Rex” by the Washington Opera Society. A White House Memo for JFK noted that although FDR had invited the composer in the 1940s, it was the first time Stravinsky would visit the White House.

Maurice Ravel and Igor Stravinsky, c. 1913. Stravinsky recalled fondly of Ravel’s defense of The Rite of Spring in later years during one of his Harvard lectures: "I hold that it was wrong to have considered me a revolutionary. When the Rite appeared, many opinions were advanced concerning it. In the tumult of contradictory opinions, my friend Maurice Ravel intervened practically alone to set matters right. He was able to see, and he said, that the novelty of the Rite consisted, not in the writing, not in the orchestration, not in the technical apparatus of the work, but in the musical entity.“

Feu d'artifice, or Fireworks - an earlier work by Igor Stravinsky composed as a wedding present for Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov’s daughter Nadezhda and Maximilian Steinberg in 1908. Sounds more like The Sorcerer’s Apprentice than anything Stravinsky wrote, but it’s short and sweet and appropriate for a festive summer day like today. Pierre Boulez conducts the Orchestre de Paris.
