My only problem with Detective Iris West is that she throws into sharper relief how poorly the show treats Earth-1 Iris.  Detective Iris has the career she wants, the husband she wants, and the life she wants, regardless of the disapproval of the men in her life.  And when those men try to dictate her choices, or act as if she’s incapable of facing danger or dealing with tough situations, she immediately sets them straight.  Perhaps the most interesting note in how the show constructed Earth-2 was that it made Joe-2 just as misogynistic and controlling as he is in Earth-1.  But Earth-2 Iris is capable of overcoming his control and striking her own path in life.

Our Iris, meanwhile, has had every decision in her life - including what career she embarked upon, who she married, and whether she got to have a relationship with her own mother - dictated and influenced by men, usually her father but also Barry and (to a lesser extent, but still) Eddie.  Nor has she been successful in breaking free of their control - in the most recent episode, when Barry tells Joe and Iris that Earth-2 Iris was a detective and Iris crows to her father that “I told you I’d have been a good cop,” Joe’s response is “don’t even think about it.”  Like, fuck you, Joe.  Your daughter is an adult and she can think - and do - whatever she wants.

Perhaps most importantly, when the men in Detective Iris’s life fuck up and hurt her, she gets to express anger and call them out on their bad behavior, such as when she dings her father for childishly picking a fight with her husband, or calls Barry out for disappearing (as she thinks) after her father’s death.  Our Iris, meanwhile, doesn’t get to feel anger - The Flash, in fact, seems genuinely terrified of letting her express anger, especially towards men like Barry and Joe, and even as they treat her with profound disrespect.

And that, my friends, is one of the many reasons why I wish the show were set on Earth-2, with or without the Flash in it, and why I’m probably going to see this season out and then stop watching.
