#TahitianProverb “Catch the bird but watch for the wave”
In the islands of the Pacific Ocean, we dance with our hips, hands, and body language. Stories of old are shared in the motion of our hips as they sway like the waves of the seas or with our hands and legs to demonstrate a legend of old. Come children, listen to our stories. Look up to the sky and dream but don’t forget to watch the waves also. #MondayProverbs #Storytelling #LessonsLearned #Tahiti #Samoa #Tonga #Aotearoa #island_Girls_rock #Life #IslandLiving #Rarotonga #Guam #Fiji #Micronesia #Polynesia #Melanesia #Pasefika

PAPA – The Earth goddess and the wife of Rangi, the sky god. Together they were the parents of the next generation of major deities, like Kane, Lono, Ku, Haumea, Kanaloa etc. When the constant lovemaking of Papa and Rangi was leaving no room for all the deities forming in her womb to be born, Kane, the god of trees and other wild plant life, was the only god powerful enough to separate the Earth and sky so that he and his siblings could be born and so that the rest of creation could commence. Only Luau, the god of earthquakes, remained in Papa’s womb and he is still there today, with his stirring being the cause of earthquakes. Papa is a very complex deity and is sometimes worshipped as if she is also Haumea the mother- goddess and Milu the death goddess or, conversely,as if they are each aspects of Papa. Most often, however, they are regarded as three separate entities.

Papahanaumoku (literally, broad place who gives birth to islands), or Pāpā, is the name of the Kanaka Maoli creator Goddess in Hawaiian mythology. Together with Her husband Wākea (sky father) Pāpā is the ancestor of all people and Kalo, and mother of islands as the Kanaka Maoli manifestation of Mother Earth.

Papahanaumoku is worshipped by Native Hawaiians, especially by women, as a primordial force of creation who has the power to give life and to heal. A women’s temple, called Hale o Papa, is the primary religious structure associated with Her worship. Hale o Papa are often built in connection with Luakini, or men’s temples (places of ‘official’ ceremony, which are primarily dedicated to the gods Kū and Lono), although it is believed by many practitioners that they may also exist independently.

In the Aloha ʻAina movement, Papa is often a central figure, as Her spirit is that of the life-giving, loving, forgiving earth who nurtures human life, and who is being abused by the misdeeds of mankind, especially in regard to the abuse of nature.

Sālote Tupou III 1900-1965

Sālote Tupou was queen regnant of Tonga in the early 1900s. She was a very tall woman at 6ft 3in and ascended the throne at the age of 18. She married Viliami Tungi, this marriage united feuding dynasties. She ensured the mapping of Tonga archeological sites which led to in depth studies of Tongan history. Sālote also wrote dance songs and love poems such as Lakalaka.

Sālote brought international recognition to Togna when attending the 1953 coronation of Queen Elizabeth II in London. She was seen as an endearing figure when she rode through the streets in an open carriage happily waving in the rain.

She died in 1965 and was deeply mourned by her people. Her body rests in Tonga.

Matariki’s themes are stars, harvest and peace. Her symbols are stars and the number 7. In Polynesia

Matariki’s themes are stars, harvest and peace. Her symbols are stars and the number 7. In Polynesian tradition, this Goddess and Her six children became the Pleiades, and they continue to help humans by showing us when to begin harvesting the labors of hand or heart.
From mid- to late November the people of Hawaii take part in special rituals to celebrate the appearance of the Pleiades in the skies, which is the beginning of harvest season. In reverence for this occasion, all war is forbidden. It makes one wish that Matariki and her children appeared around the world all the time!
To the Maori, the Pleiades are Matariki and her six daughters: Tupu-a-Nuku, Tupu-a-Rangi, Wai-Tii, Wai-Ta, Wai-puna-Rangi, and Uru-Rangi. Matariki is the Māori name for the seven-star constellation that rises in the north-east before dawn in late May/early June. In Western astronomy it is known the Pleiades, and it forms the shoulder of Taurus the Bull. Matariki marks the start of a new phase of life. It is a time of festivity for Māori, the tangata whenua, or first people of New Zealand. Matariki is an important time in the Māori calendar and is associated with the start of the cold season when the pātaka kai (food storehouses) are full and the land is at its most unproductive.
The Matariki star constellation marked a time for starting all things new, this was a particularly important period for new crops to be planted and the preserving of old crops to be finished. When Matariki was sighted ceremonial offerings of food were planted for the gods Uenuku and Whiro to ensure a good harvest for the coming year. Even the stars themselves were looked upon for guidance as to how successful the coming season would be; the brighter the star constellation the warmer the year was destined and the better the harvest was thought to be.
Matariki is the Māori name for the cluster of stars also known as the Pleiades. It rises in mid-winter – late May or early June. For many Māori, it heralds the start of a new year. Matariki literally means the ‘eyes of god’ (mata ariki) or 'little eyes’ (mata riki).

“I keep having to pinch myself to make sure I’m actually awake. The Oscars are so big – they’re huge … I’m totally humbled and ecstatic. No words are enough to explain … it’s like, wow. It’s absolutely incredible.” - after finding out about her Academy Award nomination.

Keisha Castle-Hughes was born on 24 March 1990 in Donnybrook, Western Australia, to a Māori mother, Desrae Hughes, and Tim Castle, an Anglo-Australian father. In 2003, Castle-Hughes made her debut in the film Whale Rider, in which she played the main role of Paikea Apirana (Pai). Due to not having any previous acting experience, she went directly from her Auckland school classroom to the film set when the shoot began in New Zealand in late 2001. Castle-Hughes received widespread critical acclaim for her performance, and in 2004 she received an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress at the 76th Academy Awards. Although she did not win the Best Actress award (it went to Charlize Theron for Monster), at age 13 she became the youngest person nominated in this category at the time and the second Polynesian actress, after Jocelyne LaGarde, to be nominated for an Oscar. Since she made her film debut, Castle-Hughes has appeared in various films including Hey, Hey, It’s Esther Blueburger, Piece of My Heart and Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith. She also played the main role of the Virgin Mary in the 2006 film The Nativity Story. In 2015 she joined the cast of the HBO TV series Game of Thrones in Season 5 as Obara Sand.

Artwork: “Hina” by Herb Kane.

The greatest Polynesian Goddess was a complex figure of whom many myths were told. Like other major divinities, She was associated with many aspects of life and had many symbols: She was the tapa-beating woman who lived in the moon; She was Great Hina, the death mother; She was a warrior queen of the Island of Women. An all-inclusive divine archetype, Hina appeared in many Polynesian legends, some of which – not surprisingly, for such a complex and long-lived Goddess – contradicted others.
In some legends, Hina was said to have been created of red clay by the first man. But others – in Tahiti, for instance – knew Hina as the preeminent Goddess, for whose sexual pleasure the first man was created. This Goddess has two faces, one in front as humans do, one at the back of Her head. She was the first female being on earth, many bearing Her name.
One guise Hina wore was a warrior of the Island of Women, a place where no men were allowed, where trees alone impregnated the residents. A man washed up on the shore and slept with Hina, the ageless and beautiful leader. He stayed for some time. But every time She began to show Her years, Hina went surfing and came back renewed and restored. At the same time, Her human lover gradually bowed under the years. Hina returned the man to his people on a whale, which the humans impudently and imprudently killed. The whale was Hina’s brother, and She sent terrible sufferings on the people as a result.
Among all the many stories of Hina, however, probably the most commonly known one was that of the Goddess and Her lover, the eel. Living on earth as a mortal woman, Hina bathed in a quiet pool where, one day, She had intercourse with an eel. Her people, afraid of the power of the serpent, killed him, only to find that Hina had been mating with a god.
Furious and despairing at having Her affair so terminated, Hina took the eel’s head and buried it. Five nights later the first coconut there, a staple product thereafter to Hina’s folk.

Ever wonder what our Polynesian ancestors looked like? Well meet Mana…a woman believed to be

Ever wonder what our Polynesian ancestors looked like? Well meet Mana…a woman believed to be a part of the Lapita era, progenitors of the Polynesians. The face of Mana was reconstructed using a model of her skull which was discovered by a member of a research team from USP and the Fiji Museum which excavated an early human settlement at Naitabale in the south of Moturiki Island , central Fiji in 2002.

This is the first time that the skull of a Lapita-era skeleton had been so well preserved that it was possible to faithfully reconstruct the head. This therefore represents the first time that the face of a person from the Lapita era (1350 BC to 650 BC) has ever been seen. It is the face of one of the very first people to have lived in the Fiji Islands .

Her skeleton was determined to be that of a female who had died between the ages of 40 and 60 years. She appeared to have been 161-164 cm tall and to have given birth to at least one child. She was probably right-handed. Mana’s body would have been tall, muscular and tough. Like other Lapita-age skeletons, Mana’s body was adapted to heavy mastication, and strenuous physical activity involving the neck, arms and feet. The roots of Mana’s teeth were stained brown, perhaps from chewing roots of kava. The results suggested that Mana lived in the year 800 BC, perhaps earlier.

The Lapita people were the first humans to colonise the western tropical Pacific Islands . They remain visible as a distinctive cultural group for only a few hundred years, starting about 1350 BC in the Bismarck Archipelago of Papua New Guinea and ending about 650 BC in Fiji , Samoa and Tonga . Around the beginning of this period, from bases in Papua New Guinea and Solomon Islands , they set out eastwards on intentional voyages of colonisation. They encountered groups of islands ( New Caledonia , Vanuatu , Fiji , Tonga and Samoa ) that were not occupied by humans.
