Editorial: January 2017

The turn of the year is always a time for rest, reflection and resolution. As 2016 passes I would like to thank you personally for your support over the past twelve months and longer.

Looking forward, the year ahead brings with it both challenges and opportunities for the international Palestine solidarity movement, not least because there are some significant anniversaries in 2017. It is 100 years since the infamous Balfour Declaration;70 years since the signing of the UN Partition Plan;50 years since start of the occupation of the West BankandGaza Strip; and 10 years since the beginning of the ongoing siege of Gaza. This year, it is all the more vital for us to work together to ensure that these anniversaries do not pass unnoticed and unmarked.

As the inauguration of President-elect Trump looms — the first major political shift of 2017 — his campaign statements suggest that the Palestinians face a crisis like never before. Despite this, there is much to remain hopeful about.

The close of 2016 brought with it the news that the UN Security Council has adopted a landmark resolution calling for a halt to all of Israel’s illegal settlement activity in the Occupied Palestinian Territories. Politically and diplomatically, therefore, there appears to be some progress.

However, the humanitarian crisis is getting worse by the day. Now, more than ever, the imperative is upon us to come together #ForPalestine and do our part to support our brothers and sisters in need. Interpal’s teams are there on the ground; please help them to ease the day to day struggles of the Palestinians as they try to bring some normality into their lives.

ONE MONTH INTO THE PROJECT! wow, i still haven’t broken my streak yet! i’m pretty impressed. only 11 more months to go, and i’ll have completed a full year! :D

the idea of reverse mermaids struck me in the middle of calculus class this past wednesday, and while originally it seemed unattractive yet hilarious, i’ve grown to love the idea of cute fish ladies wearing pastel colors and hanging out at the beach. these two seem pretty kawaii to me, at least.

i’m sure this idea has been executed differently (and better) by many others, but here’s my little end of the week doodle on it, i guess.

if you haven’t read Princess Princess yet, do so immediately!! it’s the cutest little webcomic i’ve ever seen, featuring two adorable ladies plus a really great and heartwarming story!

this is sadie and amira from that comic, only with modern (read: way less complicated to draw) clothing. i love them both so much ; v ;

i sort of experimented with a different style with this one? i kinda really like the whole thicker outlines thing, it frames it pretty well. and of course, no doodle of a cute brown boy is complete without a partial frame of anime roses! those were actually super fun to do, i think i’ll do more of those.

this particular brown boy is kamal, a friend’s oc. isn’t he adorable? <:

ugh this book is so frickin’ cool, i can’t believe i’d never even heard of it until my roommate brought it up last year. it’s so innovative and interesting and the descriptions make me shiver. i can’t wait to finish this one and move on to the others in the series!!! c:

we’re going to be best friends forever!

01.27.14:

another of my faaaave ladies from avatar the last airbender, the lovely and dangerous ty lee! she’s always been one of my favorites because she’s so girly and cheery, but totally kicks ass on the battlefield, too. <: plus she and the kyoshi warriors would be such besties, for real.

another quick doodle because i’ve got an evening class tonight! i have a feeling i’m gonna be doing more art of this variety and less of the involved stuff, now that i’m back in class. (wooo for first day though!)

i mean come on that’s a pretty cool idea, right? a rapunzel who just has a gigantic afro that grows out s u p e r long (and, depending on the adaptation, has healing powers)? i think it’s pretty cute.

drawing hair remains one of the most difficult challenges i’ve ever encountered. i gave up on shading. |:

01.25.14:

you know what we need more of? queer romcoms! so have these two ladies: a young girls’ softball coach and the coo of a major corporation, finding time out of their busy schedules to have cute little dinner dates and movie nights.

i moved back into college today, so just a quick sketchy thing. i experimented with more of the whole monochrome vibe, with some success, i think.

01.24.14:

i got hit with nano nostalgia … nanostalgia?? anyways, these two lovely ladies are the ass-kicking futuristic space pirate main characters of my 2013 nanowrimo. (which … i never finished. but hey, i tried!) persephone on the left, arya on the right. charming, aren’t they?

putting more than one character in a drawing forces me to practice shading from one light source, which is something i should do more.
