Inktober 2021 day 1: CRYSTAL

It is believed that Japanese yokai “Kojin” (shark man) cries with red tears. Once they touch the ground they turn to beautiful red rubies.

A sketch of the Mikoshi Niyūdō. Tried to give this yokai a gritty kind of vibe.

My cover for the Tōkyōiter - an imaginary magazine about what makes Tokyo such fascinating place to live and experience. “We are sure that with this tribute to The New Yorker traditional cover art and The Parisianer, we can both celebrate illustration, cartooning, drawing, design, creativity… and Tokyo.”

The creatures on my cover are made up but they are inspired by Japanese Yokai and just like the rest of Tokyo, they’re taking a spontaneous nap on the train.

Inktober day 7

prompt: yokai

Nº 11: Karakasa kozō ☂

These funny-looking spirits are transformations of Chinese-style oiled-paper umbrellas. They’re often depicted having either one or two legs, a single large eye, and a long, protruding tongue.

Nº 6: The Akaname

Akaname is a small, goblin-like yokai that dwells in the dirtiest homes and public baths. These stinky spirits have extremely long, sticky tongues to lap up the slime, grease, hair, and other filth found in bath houses and behind toilets.

Nº 4: The Inugami

Inugami are a type of familiar commonly found in West Japan. They’re often disguised as regular dogs to blend in with society. Its true form is that of a dog dressed in ceremonial trappings.
