(Non-fanart) I just realised I never uploaded this bunch of refs anywhere after I finished this compilation of canon(?) costumes that the main Ninjago cast has used up till season 13 somewhere in the first quarter of the year. (I can’t remember from exactly where all these images were taken from but most of them were from the ninjago fandom wiki as well as my own screenshots from the show that were uploaded onto youtube.)
I guess this is my present to the ninjago community? Merry Christmas!

Elemental blades!

They’re my favourite weapon that the boys used, even if they’re not as fancy as the technoblades.
Tidbit of info, the crystals that I used as the blade colours were: Jay - Amazonite / Cole - Green + Purple jade / Zane - Quartz / Kai - Padparadscha

One of my favorite ninjago moments is at the end of Prime Empire, when Jay takes down unagami, he doesn’t do it by fighting.
He does it by talking. By understanding Unagami, validating his struggles, connecting with him on a personal level. He was able to see what nobody else could and realize that unagami was not inherently bad. Jay saw he was suffering and instead of fighting thought ‘maybe I can help.’ Granted, Milton Dyer was the one who actually talked unagami out of fighting. But without Jay, they never would have made it that far.
It really highlights what I feel is an under-appreciated but critical part of his character.
Jay gets people. There is a reason everyone loves him. I firmly believe there likely isn’t a person he’s met that he couldn’t eventually win over. He has a special skill for being able to connect with others and make them feel understood. He’s one of those people that you inherently feel you can trust after just one conversation.
I love that about him. I wish it was something that I saw more often because it’s such a great part of his character beyond ‘I’m a funny anxious bastard’
Don’t forget jay wasn’t the first one to do this!
Cole also talked to sensei yang in DotD. Yang gave up his spot to become human and release himself from his curse for Cole.
Cole is always said to be the rock of the team. Everyone relies on him for emotional support. He is the one to give comfort and security and truly cares for others. There is definitely more depth to these characters then the recent ninjago season have been showing!

So, like a year ago, I had this dream of this Ninjago AU. I don’t necessarily have a name for it, but I do remember many aspects of it. I finally decided to somewhat bring it to life.
Let’s start with the most prominent character in the dream.
Cole
Master of Water
- Cocky
- He has dark skin, similar in color to Shade (which was the main reason I chose not to color because black and grays are not my friend)
- He’s half serpent. He’s not human in the slightest. His other half is unknown. The only person who knows he’s part serpent is Lloyd. He doesn’t have a tale, but he does have fangs.
- The area of skin on his upper arm serves as a kind of armor
- Might be part Oni, who knows
Kai
Master of Earth
Kai was the only ninja in my dream to have a confirmed element, it being Earth. I had to deflate his hair, kinda as a testament to his personality.
- His entire personality was pretty much the exact opposite of his show counterpart.
- In this AU, serpentine are looked down upon and because of his tail and scaly skin, he’s self-conscious, even around his friends.
- He doesn’t not know his own strength
- Clumsy
Jay
Master of Fire
(I know that’s not the letter “J” in ninjargon, but I’m too lazy to fix it)
- Nindroid
- His predominant expression is :]
- He likes to use his element to fly
- He has a very poor sense of humor
- Still just as emotional as his show counterpart
Zane
Master of Wind
- He’s a human. The only full human on the team
- He’s is one flamboyant motherfucker
- Green hair streak
- P i n s
- He loves using his elemental abilities to cheer up the others. Especially Kai and Lloyd
- His design is based off an OC that I made as a joke
Lloyd
Just a kid lol
- Is still half human, part dragon, and part oni. He actually shows it (horns)
- Tends to hide his horns under his hood
- Has powers that aren’t exactly “elemental” but doesn’t know it yet
- Good kid
- Wants to be useful
Nya
Team mom
- Kai’s half sister
- 2 years older than Kai
- Basically raised Kai after their (human) parent abandoned them
- She’s not “tough” but she can defend herself
- Not an elemental master
Some other headcanons I had for this AU:
- The Great Devourer fucked up Ninjago before it was defeated, giving serpentine a bad rep
- Zane and Cole take turns being leader
- Garmadon and Wu have switched roles
- Jay has a thing for Nya (it’s a destiny thing)
- Cole is a fatherly figure to Lloyd because they’re both from a background known for destruction
- Zane and Kai are best friends
- Nya and Kai’s (human) parent abandoned them because of the whole serpentine thing
Bonus Doodles
Also some things I scrapped/changed from the original dream:
- Kai was some kind of water mutant thing that I changed to a serpent
- Cole was a fucking prick
- Kai had a terrible stutter
- Cole had this ability to read his opponents every move before they struck
- This AU was actually one of the 16 realms
