“Excuse me if this is too forward,” Hoseok said, “but you two are such a cute couple.”
Jungkook’s mouth dropped open in surprise. “W-wait, no, we’re not—why would you even think—?“ she stammered, face growing hot even as Jimin giggled, unaffected.
“Oh,” Hoseok said in surprise. “I’m sorry, it just looked like—“
Jungkook looked down at their hands which were still clasped together on the table. Oh. She withdrew hers quickly.
“Don’t worry,” Jimin said, still grinning. “We get that a lot.”

A cold chill ran through his veins when he glanced up, making eye contact with the slowly advancing creature. Pressing himself hard against the wall, he tried to get his legs to move, trapped under the blank stare of it’s reptilian eyes.

The familiar sound of Jungkook’s wet feet pattering against the concrete sounded louder in the quiet of the night. He’d just finished fishing a scuba fin from the bottom of a tank he’d accidentally knocked it into and was now soaking wet as he tiptoed his way down a dim hallway. He’d never been down this way before and the deeper he got, the more he couldn’t remember why he was there.
The dominoes had all begun falling hours ago when his colleagues all left early to celebrate the birthday of someone he didn’t know, on a Friday night. A little too coincidental that they all happened to be friends with the same nameless person, he thought, but he hadn’t been working there long enough to complain. So he was left to lock up, feed the animals, and clean up, all by himself.
Three months ago, Jungkook was hired at Busan Marine, a marine biology lab in his home state. His application had been somewhat of an impulsive decision after weeks of being pestered by his parents to pick a career and get out of the house. He’d been walking back from the beach when he noticed a pretty lady walk out the front doors of the large glass building. That had been all the incentive he’d needed for him to check out if they were accepting applications online.
Come to find, he enjoyed the work. Granted he was just a low-level employee, a glorified coffee-runner, but he didn’t mind because he got to interact and feed all the cool sea creatures the lab held. And he got paid well for it.
There were sections he didn’t have access to, areas where the more dangerous and expensive sea creatures resided, but that night he’d been given the passcode to the lower-level labs so he could clean up the equipment that was used that day by his colleagues. He’d honestly been pretty stoked to see some of the sharks up close, the small ones with the cool patterns being his favorite. After discovering the long hallway, though, dimly illuminated by red floor lights, he was suddenly less excited.
Jungkook was in an area of the building he’d never been in before — never had a reason to be in — but it was one of the labs, as labeled on the signs, which meant he had to check and make sure everything had been cleaned and put away. If he didn’t, his colleagues would get in trouble, leading him to take the brunt of it all.
As he got closer to the large door at the end of the hallway, his heart beat faster. It wasn’t like the rest of the building was any better lit, the main lights all shut off after closing, but facing this door, he still felt the irrational urge to run.
Taking a deep breath, he quickly typed in the correct sequence of numbers on the screen beside the door, startled slightly by the beep that echoed and ‘unlocked’ glowed fluorescent green on the screen.
Pushing the heavy door open, Jungkook peeked in, his jaw dropping at the sight before him. The biggest tank he’d ever seen took up 85% of the large lab. It was so big he couldn’t even see where you accessed it, just floor to ceiling reinforced glass filled endlessly with water.
Stepping all the way in, he switched on the room lights, squinting at the brightness. With the lights on, he could see in detail, just how different the tank was. It was filled with all kinds of plant and sea life. He felt like he was at an aquarium instead of a lab, the only sign suggesting otherwise was the small amount of equipment neatly organized on a counter. Jungkook was sure that if he snooped through the cabinets above the counter, he would find even more evidence.
Completely forgetting his job, he stepped closer, grinning as the fish reacted to his presence. Almost pressed up to the glass, he could see just how deep the water was — unimaginably so, everything disappearing into a deep blue abyss.
“This is amazing,” He whispered in awe.
He must’ve spent over an hour just watching, noticing that if he was still enough, he could catch the more shy creatures peaking out before swimming away. There was one fish, in particular, a vibrant blue one, that seemed to follow him as he walked around, looking for the entrance to the tank. He had no intention of getting in the tank, but his curiosity was getting the better of him.
What was the point of this particular lab? To recreate the lifestyle of the sea creatures and study them? Wouldn’t it be better (and cheaper) to just study them in their natural habitat?
Creeping deeper into the lab, he followed the tank as it stretched around a wide curve before coming to an end. There was another door, this one with a scanner much more impressive than the rest of the building’s security. He’d never seen anything like it in person before, but if he had to guess, he would say that it was some kind of facial recognition.
Realizing he’d have to settle for disappointment, he turned back and started towards the exit. There was nothing for him to do here, everything was already immaculate.
Running a hand through his damp hair, he nearly yanked it out in surprise when a massive tail sticking out from behind a mass of green foliage was caught in the corner of his vision. Flinching back, he almost tripped over his own feet, barely catching himself before he made friends with the floor.
Fascinated, he stepped closer, trying to get a better look. It looked like a beautiful combination of an eel and a betta fish, only much, much larger than either. It was also somehow more, more beautiful, more mysterious, more otherworldly. The way the pale white, almost see-through skin flowed reminded him of fabric lost at sea and maybe he would have believed it was if it weren’t for the body of the tail…if it even was a tail. He could barely see it, much less the rest of the creature the appendage belonged to.
And then it was gone, the suddenness of it sending him flinching back again. It happened so quickly he couldn’t even tell which direction it disappeared to, if he had, he would’ve tried to follow it.
Eyes darting wildly around the tank, he tried to find the creature again, with no such luck. What he really wanted to do was jog down the path in hopes of catching another glimpse, but he didn’t want to startle any of the other animals.
With a dejected sigh, he shut off all the lights and left the beautiful lab behind. He would be back though, there was no way he could resist getting a glimpse of the creature.
Finishing up his tasks, he headed home to do some research. Maybe he could put a name to what he saw.

Jungkook was the last one at work again, only this time it was of his own volition. His search online had proved fruitless, nothing matching what he’d seen. He figured if he saw the whole creature, he’d be able to better discover what it was.
Already though, he couldn’t understand why such a magical creature wasn’t more popular. Wasn’t beauty always something people were interested in? What he’d seen, without a shadow of a doubt, could be placed at the top of the list of most beautiful animals. Unless, of course, the rest of it was less striking, but he just couldn’t believe that to be the case. Couldn’t picture the rest of it being any less whimsical.
This time around, he entered the lab with eager excitement, taking in the beautiful view with wide, doe eyes. Forgoing the lights, suspecting that might be the reason the creature didn’t show itself, he relied on the safety lights. The lab was no brighter than a movie theater, but it was enough to see the vague shape of things. Enough to know if he saw what he was looking for.
Nights passed, with no luck. One more night, he told himself. If nothing happened, he would chalk it up to his imagination and stop returning.
Hours passed of him sitting quietly, patiently waiting. It wasn’t unenjoyable, his evenings spent waiting, the dull hum of the filters, and the hypnotic view of the animals swimming by lulled him into a peaceful, sleepy state. Usually, he was able to fight the fatigue, but after a particularly exhausting day, his eyes slipped closed without permission.
In his dreams, he was surrounded by cold, dark water, his lungs burning for air. Desperately, he kicked and paddled, trying to reach the surface, but he couldn’t tell which way was up! Water began to fill his lungs, setting his chest on fire until the pain slowly ebbed away, along with the edges of his vision.
Gasping awake, coughing uncontrollably, his body worked to dispel the salty water from his lungs. But there was no water, something he only realized after becoming coherent enough.
Curled fetal on the floor, he waited for his panicked breathing to even out and his heart rate to slow. It’d been a long time since he’d had that nightmare…
Rolling over, he heaved himself to his feet, stumbling to the side and into the wall — disoriented, his body fighting his mind to stay asleep. Glancing offhandedly at the wall of water across from him, he flinched viscerally against the wall, hands coming up to cover his face in fear. No, no, no, it was just his mind making things up in its fearful haze.
Peaking, terrified, back at the tank, his heart stuttered to a stop. A humanoid figure stared emotionlessly back at him and even in the dark, Jungkook could see their reptilian eyes blinking.
Unable to contain his hysteria, his feet caught on themselves in his rush to get to the exit, his shoulder making painful contact with the metal door when his numb fingers couldn’t get it open fast enough.
