Yokai Explained: Jorogumo, Seductive Spider Lady by Linfamy

For the desk space, I wanted the accessories to be Yokai inspired to draw it back to the theme more, plus it’s really fun designing everyday items but with a Yokai spin.

The items shown are a Kappa pen pot, a Baku ring tree, a Jorogumo clock/light, and a Rokurokubi pen (with real neck stretching action). The more Yokai the player finds, the more accessories will be available to them, putting limits on the basic customisation they can do as well as encouraging them to go out and find more Yokai. Their general appearance, being fun and enjoyable, is one of the core aspects of Yokai themselves. Many are lighthearted and silly, often being satirical too, but still retain that fun nature. As being fun and lighthearted is a staple aspect of what I want my app to have, it’s a perfect combination.

Same deal as last post! I spent most of October doing two yokai related art challenges- yokaitober and Ayokaiaday. I forgot to mention that I made posts for both challenges on my website Cattype.net (not .com, remember that) and that I made elaborate header images for both of them. I thought a grid was fitting since I was posting a yokai for almost everyday on the calendar. A calendar is a grid therefore grid. See? Logic.

#Shikigami : Yokai that serve the will of the individual who has summoned them, known as an Onmyouji.

Jorogumo - Ninja. Using their charms and mobility, a Jorogumo silently hunts her prey before striking from the shadows. Able to spin giant webs of spider silk, they can also create traps and hinder their opponents. As a Shikigami they occasionally can be seen aiding their master in reaching higher vantages.

This one was pretty cool to paint. The idea behind the spider silk around the rifle was to use the silk as a stabilizing force. Like a mount. I don’t know the physics behind something like that but, man I love fantasy.
