Homework by Julie Andrews and Emma Walton Hamilton

I very rarely pick up biographies, memoirs or anything of that sort, I have to be intrigued enough by the person to really put the time in. I generally find them to be dense with information and not something I can sit with for long.

However, I do love Julie Andrews. Mary Poppins and The Sound of Music are two movies that have been with me since childhood, so reading all the behind the scenes stuff was very interesting to me. All the tidbits about Walt Disney, the way they added the animation back then to working with that many kids in The Sound of Music had me very interested.

I also had no idea about the amount of stage work she had done throughout the years, starting at such a young age and being put into the role of supporting her family. I can’t imagine living with that kind of pressure when I was a young child. The things she survived throughout her life could’ve taken her down a far less impressive path, yet she still managed to become the beautiful person she is today. As I was reading this book I feel like I learned 1000 new things about Julie Andrews and maybe 1 or 2 about myself as well.

Memoirs still aren’t my favourite genre of book, but I’m glad I stepped out of my comfort zone for Julie Andrews. I give this book 4 stars ⭐️

I sense the end of my horrid book slump approaching. Thank you to Hachette Canada for the fresh read. Working on Homework by Julie Andrews and Emma Walton Hamilton.

I competed with Mary Poppins in 2016, earning a Judges Award at #LCTC and Best in Pop Culture 1st at #GenCon. She was a blast to make! Lots of embroidery and small detailing. I tried to make it as screen accurate as possible. I need to wear it again. Triple thanks to @bubblesgal0re for carving that bird head. Added a great touch.

“I want to exist more on the other side of fear. So I’m going to challenge my excuses and get out of my own way. I can be my own worst enemy at times.”
✨ We caught up with the brutally handsome British actor @martins_imhangbe_ for an exclusive interview on his plans for 2021 and new role in the forthcoming @netflix original series @bridgertonnetflix which releases on Xmas Day ✨ The show, based on the series of novels by acclaimed romance writer @juliaquinnauthor , follows the titular Bridgerton family during the height of Regency-era London as they play the socio-political game of high society. The series is Rhime’s first foray outside of her comfortable home at ABC, and Imhangbe is part of the delightfully diverse ensemble cast which includes #JulieAndrews, #jonathanbailey, #AdjoahAndoh, #BenMiller, #JulianOvenden, and #PollyWalker.

Imhangbe plays #WillMondrich, an up-and-coming boxer and close friend of Duke Simon Basset. The role is based on the real-life boxer Bill Richmond, a boundary-breaking sportsman of the time who was born into slavery in the USA and went on to be world’s first black sporting superstar. Imhangbe is a boxing enthusiast himself, but in truth he sees more of himself in Mondrich than just a love of the sport. He sees a hardworking family man full of ambition like himself, which blends wonderfully with the vibrant and colorful cast of characters around him.

.
Secret Agent (1936): This one features a young, very Sherlockian-looking John Gielgud. Peter Lorre plays another secret agent who gets very irritated by Gielgud’s too-goody-Britishism. Most interesting scene: a metal button spinning along the rim of a bowl. The dialogue in this film is quite good, as it is in nearly all the early Hitchcock talkies. Realistic and witty, even the ‘nice’ characters can be punchy. A german grandmother, speaking perfect English herself, asks the American in her group to speak a little German. “Why, your pronunciation is just terrible,” she says sweetly. There are love scenes, but not the horrible melodramatic kind. Hitchcock’s lovers, when they are not sparring, are enjoying each other’s banter in a more congenial manner— as Lorre’s character puts it, “the morning husband and wife exercises.” The rest of the film is not uninteresting when the scenes are about the characters, but the WWI-related plot is quite workaday, and the only point of interest are the war events that glide into that most famous biopic made almost 30 years later, Lawrence of Arabia. This Hitchcock is not one of the great ones, but it has its moments.
