#jurassic palettes

LIVE

Here we are, last stop on the JP Palettes train. The Holy Grail for every JP 90′s kid. At least as far as I’ve gathered.

Hot take: Rubber “real feel” skin is super overrated. Sure, flexibility, less seams, and “skin-like” material is neat, but it’s a lot less durable, easier to break, and paint can be susceptible to peeling. Nothing lasts forever, but I feel rubber has a real short shelf life.

Enjoy!

Here’s a GIF going between the Jurassic Park and Jurassic World T. rex colorations. There’s a decent amount of discrepancies between the actual models, but these colors match up a lot better than I expected.

Hope you like it!

And, here it finally is, the last Jurassic Palettes piece. I may come back to this idea in the future but it’s so nice to finally have finished this project as originally planned.

The T. rex is my favorite dino in the series, so this one was especially fun to work on. Second to the raptors, it (understandably) gets the lion’s share of cool color schemes from the franchise.

Enjoy!

Here’s an extra Male T. rex, this one’s more “generic” than the others. It follows the patterning most random merch from JP3 used (lollipop holders, things like that). There is a specific source, props to anyone who can guess what it is.

The Male Tyrannosaurs are done! T. rex has some killer color schemes across the franchise and there’s so much good stuff to pull from. I know there are still some iconic rexes left unaddressed by this post, rest assured they’ll be in the next (and, for the moment, final) piece.

Happy Holidays!

I’m sure like a lot of people, I’m hoping this bad boy shows up in JW3. That and Spino. They’re both super cool but they keep getting only alluded to/ending up in deleted scenes.

Happy Halloween everybody!

So for a little bit now I’ve been putting together these palettes of different color schemes the JP dinos have had across the franchise over the years. Seemed themey to release them today what with everyone wearing all manner of costumes and makeup and such tonight.

I’ve had a lot of fun making these even though I only have two to show off at the moment. I intend to do a lot more, so I’ll probably be gradually sharing more of these as time goes on. Hope people enjoy!

I got some new brushes recently and was able to work through this one pretty quickly compared to the others. Which is great since I haven’t gotten to the really good ones yet.

Enjoy!

GIFs are fun. Even if I can’t make much more than fade overlays.

Supposedly, just before filming began for the Triceratops scene in Jurassic Park, Stan Winston had his puppeteers rub dirt into the puppet in an effort to make it look more realistic. His reasoning was that large mammals like elephants and rhinos often take dust baths to protect their skin from the sun. And with a somewhat similar body size and niche, Triceratops likely would have too. I’m not sure if this is still a reasonable assumption given what we currently know about the animal, but word is this made the texture artists (understandably) pretty mad.

So I made a dirt overlay during the process of the Triceratops palette just to see how it looked and it ended up being a great match to the film. I figured I’d share the results with people for fun/perspective on what was built and what ended up on screen.

I finally got to finishing this set of JP Triceratops. It took a long time (mostly due to work and not being good doing efficiency and detail simultaneously) but I feel like it was worth it.

I’ll be doing some other paleo sketches in the meantime but some JP carnivore palette sets are planned next. I’ll be saving the best for last, but carnivores are usually crowd pleasers regardless.

Slowly working on the next Jurassic Park palette when I can, but figured I’d share this one early since it’s a fan favorite. Everyone clammering for the best Triceratops color scheme in the franchise.

Another set of JP color schemes for Parasaurolophus. I kinda wanted to include the one from JP: The Ride, but I felt like the ones here were from more “prominent” sources and got in more varying colors.

We’re in the home stretch now! Here are a bunch of baby T. rex. My definition of what applied is pretty arbitrary, but there’s some good stuff here. I especially love the blue Dino Trackers T. rex. I have the actual figure and it was a good reference.

The male, bull buck, whatever you want to call it is next. Lots of JP3 & TLW for that one.

Jurassic World Raptors are here, with handy guides on how to distinguish between the OG raptor squad (Big images, top to bottom: Blue, Charlie, Delta, Echo). JP3 raptors are up next, it is only getting more nostalgic from here on out.

I’ve been sitting on extra pen drawings of the JP dinos for a WHILE now, and I am finally set to start wrapping up this old project.

They’re not technically impressive, but these things are like art comfort food for me and now that the upscaling and reformatting is finished these are fun to work on. Hope people enjoy, a bunch of raptors and rexes are coming soon!
