Part 5 of my Into the Komiverseseries.

*It’s fine even if you haven’t read the first 4 parts. But it adds flavor.

Summary: Tadano and Komi continue trying to make sense of what is going on after having been transported to another world. And this is only just the beginning.

After they had exchanged their greetings, there was an indescribable resonance that took place between the two Tadano and Komi pairs as they made closer contact with each other. It was something they felt on both a physical and spiritual level. They already had a strong hunch that they were doppelgangers of each other, and this feeling of familiarity welling up inside them only helped to confirm it.

Is this really a dream…? Tadano was no longer so certain.

“…I guess you dropped in?” Tadano (M) asked after a moment’s hesitation. His mouth did not move, but somehow his words rang out clear as day.

“…’Dropped in’?” Tadano asked calmly. Though he seemed relaxed―or rather, ‘normal’―on the surface, his nerves were going haywire; his back even felt like it was about to spasm from how badly his nerves were affected… He could not allow himself to lose his composure, however, for Komi’s sake. He was this nervous… He could only imagine how bad it must be for her in this moment.

“…I… guess so?” he responded again after giving his counterpart’s question more thought. He was bewildered beyond words, as one might expect of someone in his situation. He could hardly describe what had just happened to him and his girlfriend, but ‘dropping in’ was as good a way of putting it as any, he decided. “…If that’s what that was…”

Tadano (M) slowly nodded his head. “We’ve had a couple of people mysteriously drop out before, but this is the first time I’ve heard of someone dropping in.

The two Komi’s were busy quietly examining each other at various angles… It was something to preoccupy themselves with. It at least helped take some of the edge off.

“Honestly speaking…” Tadano (M) said to Tadano in a low voice as they watched the two girls, “Not to alarm you or anything, but you’re most likely stuck here…”

Tadano stared at him. That would not be the worst case scenario, but… Komi-san will be devastated if we can’t go back… We have so many friends waiting for us back home.

Tadano (M) immediately felt bad for saying something so insensitive. He could have at least been more delicate about it, he realized. I should have known better than to say something like that… There must be something I can-Oh! Hey, d-don’t give up hope…” he said as he flailed his arms back and forth in front of him. “We can ask the principal about it! He seems to be the oldest among us. Maybe he will know something… He’s a bit… peculiar though…”

The principal…? The principal of Tadano’s high school immediately came to mind. Thatguy?

“N-no offense, but…” Tadano said anxiously, “The rest of your… people… T-they won’t think we’re… suspicious… will they?”

Tadano (M) stifled a laugh. “Don’t worry. Shouko and I are good friends with more or less everyone here, so I don’t think you have to worry about anything like that… Shouko?”

‘Shouko’? Just how much closer are these two?

Both Komi’s looked at him.

Both Tadano’s chuckled.

“I think this may get a little confusing,” Tadano (M) continued.

“A little,” Tadano chuckled nervously. This is fascinating… but I just want to get us home…

“Shouko, do you mind bringing these two home with you to wait while I go speak with the principal?” Tadano (M) asked.

Komi (M) furiously shook her head no. She didn’t mind at all!

“Wait…” Tadano objected calmly… Or at least as calmly as someone in his predicament was able to… “Are you sure he will believe you if I don’t go with you as well?”

Tadano (M) stared at him for a moment… He didn’t want to move more minecarts than necessary, as it was a bit tedious to swap them around in chests. He also didn’t want to put their counterparts through any added stress. Would he even be able to handle the trip? Their minecarts moved quite fast… But still, “That’s a fair point.”

He took out his blocky little phone… It was a recent addition to their world that Najimi called a ‘mod’. (He refused to ask Najimi for help unless it was necessary.) “A picture should do the trick.” He suddenly got excited. “I want one of all four of us anyway… I-if you don’t mind.”

“Not at all,” Tadano said with a smile. They had only known each other for a matter of minutes, but he was reveling in the deep bond they were already beginning to forge between them. A part of him―a small part, mind you―almost wanted to stay in this strange new world.

“Great!” Tadano (M) said excitedly. The feeling was mutual.

He put down a block of dirt, then placed his phone on top of it facing the other three. After that, he placed a line of some kind of glittering red dust on the ground for a few blocks of distance, leading back to them.

Tadano and Komi were confused by his actions at first, but it was more or less clear what he was doing after a bit of deduction.

“Don’t mind me,” Tadano (M) said, a bit embarrassed, “This would be more convenient if I had a timer with me…” Good thing I make it a point to carry around some redstone.

After he was done placing the redstone down, Tadano (M) quickly crafted a wooden pressure plate out of two planks of birchwood and placed it down beside his wife and their counterparts, right where he would stand for their picture.

Once everything was set up, he got ready to step on the pressure plate. “Say cheese.”

Some time later.

Tadano and the two Komi’s rushed into Tadano and Komi (M)’s gorgeous, and rather large (if blocky) house. In the process, they were spotted by several of their neighbors (friends!).

As a result, in addition to the fact that they had just run several hundred blocks of distance, their hearts were racing faster than ever at the prospect of being asked all number of invasive questions. They were seen. It was inevitable!

Tadano and Komi immediately sat down on a black couch that was made out of blocks of wool. They seriously needed to rest.

Komi (M) was fine for the most part. At least as far as stamina was concerned… That said, she was busy panicking by the double-wide front door, anticipating that several of her friends would come knocking to see what was going on. She began to wonder if perhaps she should have rejected her husband’s idea to bring their counterparts home with her.

…She also realized that she should have used their secret tunnel entrance. It was something they had initially installed due to Yamai’s… exuberance

Yamai had calmed down in recent years, thanks in no small part to Nakanaka’s influence, but it never hurt to have that extra exit for times such as this. Komi almost wanted to use it now.

…She was going to use it now.

She took several slow, deep, calming breaths before turning to her guests.

“S… Sorry…” Komi (M) said to the pair from another world. This was the hardest time she had communicating in quite some time. That single word would barely come out. There were so many things she wanted to say to them―to ask them―but the circumstances being what they were, there was simply no time

She started rehearsing what she wanted to say to them in her head a few times. It was something she didn’t have to do for a few years now, but this situation was so far out of her depth of experience, that she had to fall back on it again.

Komi looked down at the blocky, simplistic birchwood floor. She had a feeling that her counterpart had the same communication disorder as her, and this awkward silence more or less confirmed it for her. “T… Tadano-kun…” she whispered into his ear. If it was Tadano, surely he could say or do something.

Tadano nodded once.

Should I call her Shouko or Komi-san??? He had a minor crisis on his hands for a second, but quickly decided to just call her Komi-san. “There’s no need to worry, Komi-san,” he said with his usual warm smile, “None of this is your fault.”

“Dad? Mom? You’re home already?” called a voice from upstairs. A girl.

All three of them jumped. Shizuka was home, Komi (M) realized.

“’Dad’???” Tadano repeated to himself. He just kept being bombarded with new information, one thing after another. He’s… ’I’m’ a father?

Komi blushed heavily at the fact that their counterparts had a child together. That means they did… ‘that’… She grew all the more flustered as the realization fully hit, and tightly balled her fists on her lap.

How much older were they than them? She really wanted to know! This girl sounded to be about six!

Komi was freaked out, as one might expect, but it still made her extremely happy once she realized she and Tadano had been together―at least in this world―for several years as a couple already. And they seemed to be quite happy together.

Suddenly, everything went white for the two of them.

They were ‘dropping out’ again. There was no mistaking the sensations of being rapidly pulled apart and put back together in another world. It had not even been an hour since they arrived in this world, but they were already leaving.

image

Tadano and Komi fell flat on their backsides as they rematerialized in another world. They were outdoors now, in the middle of the street.

Twice now. With odds like these, Tadano suddenly wished he had bought a lottery ticket. This place at least seemed somewhat normal.

Tadano breathed a sigh of relief, and closed his eyes for just a moment. Maybe we’re finally back home…

“Who sent you?” Tadano (N) asked in a demanding tone. In a matter of seconds, he had a pistol trained on his doppelganger at point blank range.

The following night.

Eh…?

Tadano had spent his Christmas Day in Mura Village with his family… and Najimi.

Komi, meanwhile, spent hers visiting her grandmother and the rest of her extended family at their place in the mountains along the Einai-Mellon border.

Right now you may be thinking to yourself: ‘Wait, why was there no dream for Christmas Eve?! This is a crime!’

If so, you are right and you should say it… But there is one very good reason for its absence… Komi could not sleep. At all.

As hard as she tried―and let it be known: she tried―she could not subdue her emotions enough to put her mind at rest. She tossed. She turned. She did everything in her power to help her fall asleep, including her usual breathing exercises… but none of it did any good.

She simply could not get the thought of Tadano kissing her cheek out of her head. Nor could she set aside the several other events that had happened that same night.

Tadano fared better, but not by much. He spent only 4 hours agonizing about everything in silence before at last managing to fall asleep. But without Komi, there was hardly any meaning to it.

Since she was unable to sleep, Komi sulked for the entire day. Let it be noted, however, that she did enjoy the time she spent with her family.

She just wanted to sleep. She wanted to do two days worth of sleeping, in fact.

So much so that she went to bed at the earliest convenience, leaving her family to fear that she was feeling under the weather. Of course, her grandmother had other, far more accurate thoughts on the matter.

It was about a man. Of course a man was to blame.

image

As soon as Tadano arrived in his and Komi’s shared dreamspace, the surroundings flickered and warped from just one setting into a clumsy fusion of two.

At first, he was in the Tadano family home, but he soon found himself in a combination of that and Komi’s grandmother’s home. It was as if the two houses were thoughtlessly stitched together in front of his very eyes. The two homes now shared but a single, mismatched entrance.

Komi Yuiko’s home was very traditional in style. This was, of course, because she was a very traditional woman. The walls were all bare, and painted either off-white or a soothing-but-dull yellow. The doors separating rooms were often little more than paper with a thin latticework wooden frame.

The floors of the hallways were all made of hearty red oak, while other rooms had either carpeting or tatami mats for flooring.

Startled by the sudden reality shift they’d just experienced upon Tadano’s arrival, Komi nervously looked around and took refuge behind him.

Tadano immediately blushed as Komi grabbed onto the back of his light blue pinstripe pajama shirt. Oh, thank Todd, she’s back.

They were both in pajamas, as a matter of fact. Komi seemed not to notice this fact in the moment, though Tadano most certainly did.

“I… think it’s safe,” Tadano said as he glanced over his shoulder. His warm smile did wonders in helping her to relax.

Komi reluctantly let go of his shirt and straightened herself up. “Y-you can never be too sure with Obaasan.” She was still shaken from being interrogated by her grandmother not even an hour prior to going to bed.

“E-eh…? Your grandmother is that scary?” Tadano asked with a nervous laugh.

“Um… Nn… Kinda…” she said as she looked away and began to fidget. She couldn’t say no…

“Who is scary?” called a woman’s voice from the next room over. One that commanded unfathomable amounts of authority.

Komi and Tadano both jolted. Komi even let out an audible, “Eep!”

“…So this is the one,” Yuiko surmised as she entered the room, “That ‘Tadano Hitohito’…” There was contempt in her voice as she said it. As if his very name were a curse upon her family.

Tadano gulped.

Yuiko appeared no older than her granddaughter. There was hardly any resemblance between them, however… It was clear that Komi got all of her looks from her mother. About the only thing they had in common was a gaze that pierced through the soul.

Yuiko was wearing a black kimono with an olive-colored obi, and her jet black hair was pulled back into a bun. Her arms were both loosely tucked into the sleeves of her kimono.

Komi frantically looked around as if she were preparing to make a run for it. Sure, this was a dream… but still very bad! She did not want these two to meet at all. At least not yet. Could her brain even handle creating a scenario such as this? It was going to fry at this rate. She was certain of it.

“Eh…?!Eh?!” Tadano said anxiously as he looked back and forth between them. This was only the second time his shared dreams with Komi featured anyone but the two of them. To the point that this moment felt even more ‘real’ than usual. Even for a dream, this is a bit-

“Enough…!” Yuiko ordered, “Sit…”

In an instant, the two young adults sat on their knees and proceeded to sweat bullets. It was not at all a good look for them, they independently concluded, to be caught alone and in their pajamas like this. On top of that, they were practically glued to each other!

Yuiko sighed and sat down across from them in turn, in the process resisting the urge to massage her temples. It was just as she suspected. Her granddaughter had gone and fallen for a human… A mediocre one at that.

How she and her granddaughter were pulled into this peculiar, shared dreamscape was a puzzle she could not yet solve, but she knew that it had to be the fault of the young man currently kneeling before her.

They sat in silence for an hour.

And then another.

If nothing else, Yuiko had to commend the young man for not immediately cracking under the pressure from the overt aura of intimidation she was bathing him in… But that alone was not nearly enough to satisfy her.

“Do you have nothing to say?” Yuiko asked as her patience waned. She shifted her head to focus exclusively on Tadano so she could hit him with that soul-piercing glare of hers.

It did not have nearly the effect Yuiko thought it would, however… Tadano was more than a little used to that kind of ‘glare’ by now. And that was before getting into the fact that to him, this was still nothing more than a dream.

But that is not to say that Tadano was unfazed. He was still beyond anxious… Just not for the reasons Yuiko was aiming for. All Tadano ever wanted to do was fulfill what was expected of him… Even if the person expecting something from him in this case happened to be, in his mind, nothing more than the dream version of his not-girlfriend’s grandmother.

Rather than be intimidated, Tadano simply blanked as he awkwardly tried to come up with something that would satisfy her. What the hell am I supposed to say in this kind of situation?!

“…N-nice to meet you…” he said nervously while bowing his head. A Tadano-ish response. It was at least better than remaining silent. “As you correctly guessed earlier, I am… Tadano Hitohito…”

“At least he has manners…” Yuiko said flatly.

Komi let out a breath in relief.

“And what is it, exactly, that qualifies you to date my granddaughter?”

Tadano’s heart ached as the question reached his ears. Dream Obaasan doesn’t pull any punches… In his mind, there was not a single virtue that he could point to that would put him on the same level as Komi. This was the main roadblock that prevented him from asking her out to begin with. How could he hope to be a match for someone so dazzling?

Komi stared at his face expectantly. She could think of half a dozen things off the top of her head without even trying. Was he trying to gather a full list together? Is that why he was taking so long to answer? She had no idea.

“Surely there must be something…” Yuiko tried to coax an answer from him.

Tadano shook his head. “There isn’t.”

From this lackluster answer, Yuiko got the impression he was putting on a show for her granddaughter… The ‘I don’t deserve her. Look how humble I am.’ angle.

Yuiko’s blood began to boil, just a bit. She wouldn’t allow it! She opened her mouth to give him a piece of her mind, but stopped upon noticing something.

Komi let out a sharp, indignant breath. “What do you mean ‘there isn’t’?!” she whispered into his ear.

Yuiko raised an eyebrow at that. Her granddaughter hardly ever uttered so much as a sound in her presence… But she dared to whisper something to this young man right in front of her? What Komi told him, she had no idea… but the fact of the matter was that Tadano was able to get words out of her… That alone was proof that this man was worthy of at least someconsideration.

“O-Obaasan…”

Yuiko turned to her granddaughter in surprise.

“T… Tadano-kun is a… very good person.”

Yuiko stared… “Is he now?” she asked. Had it been almost anyone else saying this, she would dismiss it out of hand. But… well, Komi was her granddaughter, after all.

Komi pomphed at her grandmother’s perceived receptiveness. But then she quickly remembered that this was a dream anyways… She had forgotten for a while there due to her grandmother having such an intimidating presence…

This was a dream. What was there to be afraid of? She emboldened herself with that thought. “He has… been very supportive of me since the moment we met.”

“Is this true, young man?”

“…Y-yes…” That was certainly true. But that’s hardly-

“H-he helped me make a lot of… really good friends,” Komi added hastily. She exhaled sharply through her nose twice. “And it’s th-thanks to him that I can do anything as an adventurer… Um… He can use holy magic, a-and barrier magic…” If it was fighting qualifications he needed, well it wasn’t as if he had none of those…

Yuiko continued to listen in silence as her granddaughter heaped her praise on Tadano… It took her no time at all to guess that the two younglings in front of her completely failed to realize what she herself had realized immediately―that this was more than a simple dream.

How Tadano and Komi failed to notice something so obvious was beyond her, but she decided to turn this into an opportunity rather than inform them of this glaringly-obvious fact.

If Tadano was even half the man Komi thought he was, Yuiko would coax the answer out of them with a test.

Rather than make a new post, I’ll just reblog this one. This chapter is finally finished and uploaded!!!

P.S. Sorry I’ve been so inactive as of late… I’m kind of burnt out on liveblogging and stuff at the moment as you may have guessed… I will eventually get back into the swing of it, I promise. Just… Not right now…

I’m going to be focusing more on my fanfiction for a while. Or at least that is the plan.

Re-reblog! Sorry again! I had to update the chapter link in the original post!

The rain continued, ever relentless in its assault. It just had to be now, of all times.

They had just finished taking a look at a university in Shibuya, and they were just about to head back home when the ‘inclement weather’ began.

Inclement weather’… What a joke… It’s got to be a full-on typhoon at this point. Tadano could not help but laugh bitterly in his heart as he and Komi weighed their options under the shelter of the subway station.

Komi idly played with a few strands of her now-soaked hair as the anxiety began to set in. Countless worries filled her head. This was all her fault… She somehow convinced herself of this, as if she somehow had any control over the weather. Surely Tadano would blame her.

She trembled at the thought.

“Don’t worry, Komi-san…” Tadano said in a calm and collected voice to ease her concerns. He smiled at her warmly despite his drop in temperature. “We’ll think of something.”

That wasn’t her main concern, but hearing those words alone was enough for her to come to her senses. She nodded, blushing again from what he had said just a few hours earlier.

‘I want to be the best match for you that I can be.’

‘I want to be as close to you, for as long as I can be.’

Komi’s heart fluttered as she replayed those words of her boyfriend in her mind over and over again, oblivious to her surroundings.

Before they could come up with any solid plans, there was a tremor that shook them to their cores.

It was not an earthquake…

Rather, it was a kind of turbulence that overwhelmed their entire being. Their bodies, their minds, even their very souls. It was a pulsing sensation reminiscent of falling… but it was also as if they were being painlessly torn apart and quickly put back together again by some unseen force.

Unknown to Tadano and Komi, there was an interdimensional alignment taking place in this very moment, and the place they had chosen to rest just so happened to be its nexus.

image

In one moment, they were in their own world taking shelter from the rain. In the next, they were in some… other place all together.

Komi quickly grabbed Tadano’s hand and upper arm, sticking closely to him for fear of being separated. They had already been ripped away from their reality. If she were to also lose him, then she would simply go insane from the stress.

Tadano blushed, and internally screamed at the top of his lungs. He had no idea what was going on, but for Komi’s sake he had to put on the strongest front that he could.

After returning to his senses, Tadano took a moment to analyze their situation. This is like something out of an isekai manga… Even thinking that killed him a little on the inside. He dared not say it aloud for fear of some kind of god coming along to confirm his fears. Komi-san can’t adventure! It’s far too dangerous…! He shook his head. No, I must bedreaming…Yeah…L-let’s just go with it for now…

They were still in a subway station… of sorts… But everything was very… different, to say the least…

To start with, everything was square. Or perhaps it would be more accurately described as blocky.

“U-uh… F-for now let’s just try to figure out what’s going on,” Tadano anxiously suggested, only to receive a flurry of frantic nods from Komi in response. Dream or not, they did not fancy the idea of staying there… Or dying…

The tunnel system they were in seemed to be made primarily of some kind of perfectly smooth grey stone.

The area was thankfully brightly lit. All sides of the tunnel were evenly dotted with perfectly cubed blocks of some kind of golden, glowing stone. These golden blocks were flush with the walls, ceiling and floor as if almost everything were the same exact shape and size.

There were exceptions, however… For instance, a number of railway tracks had been laid down in this tunnel, though they were not nearly spread out enough to be used by full-sized trains. Nor were any trains in sight.

Minecarts, however…

“Minecarts?” Tadano wondered aloud as he happened to notice one at the end of a track. Right beside it was a double-wide wooden chest.

Rather than the minecarts or chest, Komi was preoccupied with ‘something else’.

Startled by Komi’s sudden noises of shock, Tadano quickly swung around to see what was the matter. It could have been any number of things. If it was something dangerous, he had to protect her…!

Just a few dozen ‘blocks’ away was a pair of hauntingly familiar―if ~blocky~―figures.

The strange beings were halfway slouched almost as if they were ducking for cover, and they were slowly but surely making their approach.

Just as Komi was, Tadano was anxious about this pair of block people who suddenly appeared… Somehow, however, he was not as afraid of them as he expected he should be. Even as they drew closer and closer, he could not call what he was experiencing in this moment fear. At least not fear of them.

“T-they… kind of resemble us somewhat… d-don’t they… Komi-san?” he asked as he tried to ignore the sensation in his upper arm caused by Komi’s continued embrace. He gulped and returned his gaze to the other pair.

They stopped…

Just a mere 5 blocks of distance was all that separated them now.

Despite having just come in from the rain themselves, this blocky pair was already completely dry.

Until this point they were crouched, though it looked more like a bow, all things considered. A few seconds after stopping in their tracks, they had straightened themselves up and only stared at Tadano and Komi.

The block woman mirrored Komi quite closely with how she took refuge behind the block man.

Nervously, the block man did the only thing that came naturally to him in occasions like this. He bowed, then straightened himself back up again… He did this 5 times.

With great hesitance, Tadano did the same in turn, correctly deducing that this was some kind of greeting ritual for these strange-looking people.

The block woman backed up a block, then moved a few blocks to her right while keeping an eye on Komi and Tadano. She then bowed a few times herself.

Komi quickly did the same so as to not be left out.

“Can you… understand me?” Tadano(M) asked, hoping they could somehow communicate. What strange-looking people…

Tadano took a deep breath and let out a huge sigh of relief. “Y-yes… N-nice to meet you…”

Final thoughts:

AI CHAPTER! AI CHAPTER!! AI CHAPTER!!!

I absolutely love Ai, so this chapter was quite the treat for me. She is just too cute. I want to see her happy… And I want to see Shousuke actually emote.

It’s a little sad to see her long hair go bye-bye, but her new haircut is at least still really cute.

I loved her display of determination to the teacher in charge (Hira Nichitaru). It was the dramatic haircut trope done well… Unlike that other example from this very same manga. She just really wants to be with Shousuke. How sweet is that?

Speaking of Hira Nichitaru… He has a solid titanium pair, that man. He was scared of Ai… because of course he was… but he still held his ground and told her he can’t just go changing the class rosters on a whim. Not only that though, he did so with compassion, unlike how some other teachers would have done… He’s a good man… Just a little slow with the details. (You could have just told her from the beginning that she was already in the same class as Shousuke, man! She cut her hair!!!)

So after the haircut (and a mishap trying to fix it up), Ai skipped school for a few weeks to let it grow back out some… Reminded me a little of her brother, whom also skipped school for quite a while in his first year. Intentional parallels, I’m sure… I dig it.

I don’t have that much of an opinion on most of the stuff with Hitomi. I think it’s funny though that she seems to not really understand romantic implications at all. At least not when it comes to her interactions with Shousuke and Sanjuurokurou. Ai could tell her explicitly and she still wouldn’t get it.

Thank goodness though, because Shousuke x Hitomi would have been a train wreck and not one I would have liked to see.

It was pretty funny to see Ai ready to ‘sink’ Hitomi over getting so close to “Shousuke-kyun”. She can make some of the greatest exaggerated faces, which is another point of similarity with her brother… I’m sure she would rather die than hear something like that though.

The Komi cameo near the end of the chapter was really nice: Komi just lounging in bed, cuddling with Tomo-chan (her giant black cat plushie). It was adorable. I still want there to be a point where Tadano tells her that it was his gift idea… Or perhaps one of Komi’s friends should point it out instead. I just want to see her react to that news.

More importantly though, I want to know what was in that text. Something about a movie, apparently? That’s what people in the discord server are saying… I hope they go on a date to see a horror movie thinking it’s some other kind of movie. (Komi can’t handle horror well, so… Ehe…)

Ahem…

Finally, the Shousuke pomph/sigh. I wonder which it was… Either way, it’s clear that he is resigned to his fate due to his sister dating Tadano… He’s going to have to get used to Hitomi pestering him. Nothing he can do about it. I hope it was a pomph though. Because imagining him pumping himself up to just deal with all the annoyance for the sake of his sister’s happiness is just… so much better than the alternative, haha… I want him to be a good and caring brother, even if he doesn’t want to communicatethat.

Next chapter is about discount Tadano and the others in Manbagi’s class. I’m not sure about much else in it. I just want more Onemine, Nakanaka, and Yamai, mainly.

I’m bad at keeping promises on here… so I won’t make any… But, I would like to get chapter 345 done tomorrow. We’ll see.
