안녕하세요! Today we have a short lesson about a useful structure that’s used for talking about what doing an action requires: -는 데(에). Let’s start!
-는 데(에) is used for talking about what it takes to do an action. This will become clearer in the examples, but let’s start with a formula:
- [verb stem] + 는 데(에)
- The -에 is optional.
- This is not to be confused with -ㄴ/은/는데, which does NOT have a space between -ㄴ/은/는 and 데!
Here are some examples:
- 커피를 한 잔 사는 데에 천원이에요. = It is 1,000 won to buy a cup of coffee.
- This example talk about what it takes to do the action of buying a cup of coffee, which is 1,000 won.
- 떡볶이 만드는 데에 떡고 고추장이 필요해요. = In making tteokbokki, you need rice cakes and red chili paste.
- When the verb stem ends in ㄹ, drop the ㄹ!
- 한국어를 배우는 데에 매일 연습해야 돼요. = You have to practice everyday when learning Korean.
- This example talk about what you need to do to learn Korean, which is practice everyday. Notice how you can say you need to do an action or you need a noun when using this structure!
- 에쎄이를 쓰는 데에 일단 주제에 대한 연구해야 돼요. = In writing an essay, you first have to do research on your topic.
That’s about it for this lesson – I hope it was helpful! Feel free to reach out if you have any questions :) 다음에 또 봐요!

,,Ich liebe dich”
This directly translates to “I love you”. However, you wouldn’t say that to someone you like. It’s okay to say Ich liebe dich to someone you are close to. For example: your significant other. Saying Ich liebe dich shows that you trust them.
,,Ich hab’ dich lieb/ Ich habe dich lieb”
Is an innocent way to tell that you love someone. You’d use this when talking to a friend or parent. It directly translates to “I have love for you”. However, some native speakers might explain it as someone being a part of all the love they have. You can also use this phrase when you are not quite ready to tell your crush about the feelings you have for them.
,,Ich mag dich”
Directly translates to “I like you”. You’d use this in a more platonic context. It’s sometimes used as a way to indicate romantic interest.
Example: “We share the same humour, Ich mag dich.”
,,Ich habe mich in dich verliebt.”
Translates to something like “I have fallen in love with you.” You’d use this when you are 100% sure about your feelings. It shows that the “process” of falling in love is complete. If you are in the middle of falling in love, you’d use ,,Ich bin in dich verliebt.” (=I am falling in love with you”)

I came across this site which teaches you the alphabet for over 40 languages, with audio and it even lets you test yourself afterwards The site format is super simple and did I mention the 40+ languages!
The biggest struggle of learning vocab is that you remember the most outrageous shit, like “ghost” or the century old word for “king”, but keep forgetting the word for an everyday item like “pencil”.
So you’ve probably noticed I’ve been offline for some days…
Well, I just moved to a new flat with my boyfriend and it’s taking incredible amounts of time to set everything up (and, anyway, until last Saturday we didn’t even have internet…)
But I’m back now, huns.
Reading
- Use extensions like:
Flewent- translates a certain % of your article in your target language
ReadLang - translates the words you click on and adds them to a flashcards deck
Linguarana - same as ReadLang but it also translates expressions
- Read as much as possible daily. Try to set a certain amount of pages daily/weekly.
- When you listen to music, find the lyrics and follow the singers while they’re singing.
- Use wattpad if you like fanfiction. The site/app allows you to receive stories in a certain language if you look at the settings. Bonus:if you add the story to the library, you can read offline on your phone.
- When you watch movies, find subs in your target language; regardless the language of the movie.
- Find an app/site with manga. Many apps/sites have a pretty large selection when it comes to languages and if you are a fast reader, you can read quite a lot in 10-15 minutes. Bonus:many apps allow you to read offline.
- Beelinguapp is an app with fairytales in different languages. It’s pretty useful for beginners or for people who don’t feel confident enough to try something else.
- How to choose a book and study with it
Listening
- Use audiobooks. If you want and have time, try reading the book at the same time. If you listen and read at the same time, you have more chances to remember the words and their spelling, pronunciation.
- Choose a song in your target language. Read the lyrics and their translation once or twice. Then sing the song trying to remember the lyrics. Optional: listen to the song with the lyrics. I wouldn’t really recommend this because you might focus too much on the spelling and less on the pronunciation at some point.
- Many movies and videos. It will be frustrating at first but after a while, you will get used to it and focus on what you know so you can guess what’s the meaning of what you don’t know.
- Try using audiocourse or courses that focus a lot on interaction and listening like Pimsleur.
- Use apps like HelloTalk, Tandem, Skype, the audio messages on Facebook etc. if you want to practice with natives.
- When you learn vocabulary, try to find the pronunciation on Forvo or just choose resources with audio.
- Apps/Sites like 50languages, awabe, duolingo, memrise, busuu, babbel, lingodeer etc. have audio for most of their languages so they are worth your time.
- Change the speed of the videos you are watching. Youtube has such a setting.
Writing
- Read a lot. When you read you pay attention to what kind of structures are used in a text and the more you read, the more you get a “feeling” if the spelling of a word is right or if the strutcure makes any sense. If i ask an advanced learner why they write “i think of” they won’t be able to explain why “of” is there and not something else but they will know at any time that it’s a construction that need to be like that.
- Write daily something. A short text about anything. Topics to write about
- Keep a diary. How to keep a journal/diary in your target language
- Talk daily to someone on facebook, tumblr, hellotalk etc.
- When you watch a movie/video or read a book/chapter, write a summary.
Speaking
- Sing. This will help you more or less with your pronunciation.
- Talk to someone over skype or over voice messages on facebook/other sites/apps.
- How to improve your speaking skills without a native
I don’t care how many people speak it.
I don’t care if it’s already a dead language and only those who study it in uni will properly understand it.
I don’t even care if it’s a fictional language.
You want to learn a new language?
GO FOR IT.
And don’t let bigots convince you that it is useless. Because IT IS NOT.

“Me debato entre la vida y la muerte”
This Spanish phrase could be translated a few different ways:
I’m fighting for my life
I’m on my death bed(estoy en mi lecho de muerte)
I’ve got one footnin the grave.
Basically, it means one is close to death. Whether they manage to eacape death is another story….
